I don't know why are you people fighting over this it's just a simple matter of riding a pig or a horse in a game. Who cares if it can be craftable or not, it's purpose is letting people have fun while playing the game, and if you don't like the game, you just leave it and create your own game which suites your personal tastes or just bear with it. It's not for just one individual, it's aim is to entertain people majority of the people who are playing it. Again, if you don't like the game's features, just go create your own game. Also, I don't give a crap about riding pigs. Why are you people getting so worked up over the features of a game. I complement everyone in Mojang for their great work. That's all.

I have no qualms about having saddles craftable. While you may say leather is not hard to find, I have had to travel for a while to find cows on a fair bit of worlds, and even then there was no guarantee they were going to drop some. Being able to craft saddles will not break the game, or have any terrible consequences. Besides, I would rather have the satisfaction of crafting a saddle, and in a sense "inventing" horse riding for that world. I don't think going through the tedium of finding a strip of hard leather and buckles from some hidden temple, and it doesn't feel special anymore because they probably did it first.

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...
Wow, this topic has been necro-bumped. I still can't believe the debate is still going, even after Mojang has made their decision.
The debate never reached anything remotely called consensus... it mostly just died because everything else is just a rehash of previous arguments. I think you still got some strong opinions on this topic and will continue to have such strong opinions into the future.
One way to sort of resolve this debate is to make the ability for non-techies (aka without even a mod but just simply a text editor) be able to manipulate recipes in the game. If you want to add a recipe for something like this, just add it into the game yourself and be done. Even now, creating a mod for this is trivial and technically doesn't even need Forge nor for that matter even MCP (if you are remotely good enough at such things).
The answer to the question of craftable saddle should be easy just by thinking about what a saddle is.
It's made of leather and iron without the need of extraordinary tool, so it' should be craftable.
It's pure logic.
I'm much more sceptical about those horse armor made of gold, diamond, you can find everywhere.
With my 1.6.2 map, I have a full chest of horse diamond armor and anaother full chest of horse gold armor and a double full chest of horse iron armor.
If you explore the land and the underground, you will quickly have plenty of them.

Exactly. If people would spend their time exploring instead of arguing about craftable saddles they would have plenty.

Please don't ever use the "it's logical" argument for minecraft. This is a game, not real life. It doesn't follow logic and it doesn't have to.
If you just applied logic to minecraft, you would need to use an anvil to make an iron pickaxe, and you would have to chisel a stone pickaxe out of rock, and you wouldn't ever be able to shape a diamond into a chestplate, or even into a shovel.
Logic can be good in some cases. If you jump up then you should fall down, because that is logical and without that bit of logic the game would kinda suck, in this case logic and gameplay go hand in hand. But if you place logic before gameplay, then you have a problem. Making everything craftable is logical, but it would make gameplay suffer because you would never have to travel more than a few hundred blocks from your house.

In real life, a saddle doesn't instantly turn a horse into an automaton. (warning: TV Tropes link) The Minecraft saddle does. It isn't the saddle that turns a horse and rider into a well coordinated team like we see in Minecraft. It is all the training that both horse AND rider undergo that makes horse and rider seem like one, especially war horses. Given that a Minecraft saddle allows you to turn any untrained horse into a horse that will run through fire, jump off cliffs, and run towards the scary monsters, there is clearly something more going on there beyond mere leather and metal.
On another note, in my opinion, horses are too good a mode of transportation not to slow down their acquisition early into a game. Horses are not too difficult to find, nor are saddles. A player should exert some effort to acquire them, just like other forms of rapid transportation, like rails, the Nether, or ender pearls. Sometimes, realism has to take a back seat to game balance.
Oh, hey, this thread is back.
I see the "Why not?" section of the poll still shows bias promoting the uncraftability of saddles.
The poll on my thread, which was posted long ago, still shows the opposite results to this one.
This thread, to be exact: Saddles should be craftable
Seeing as the topic has come up, I have rewritten the original post.

Why not just buff railroads?
They should be way faster than horses due to their resource requirements.
Railroads are the late-game transportation systems.
Besides, the way they are, a person can just find a saddle at the beginning of a world if they get the luck of spawning near a dungeon, or in a village.
Personally, I'd rather get good stuff from chests, not saddles.
If I want a saddle, I'd rather just craft it.
There's no point in getting more saddles after you have like two.
If there were good things in those chests, like unique equipment or high-tier resources like diamonds, chests would be more desirable.
Chests filled with saddles are of no use to anybody with just a few of those.

I Agree I Don't want the only reason to explore temples and dungeons to be horse stuff, i would like anvils, ender chest, and blaze rods. As for mine carts in the real world they don't move that fast. Maybe just nerf the horse little bit, minecarts are more for moving lots of stuff from point A to B or just for a fun roller coaster, as for craftable saddles i really don't care either way.

Incorrect. You can NOT use a saddle on a horse until after it's been tamed, so it's roughly the same thing as calling a real life horse "saddle broke".
I suppose it might be interesting to actually have to train a horse for various specific purposes after the initial taming, but frankly speaking that's getting a little too complicated and overly specific to fit in well with Vanilla. Might make for an interesting mod, however.
As for craftable saddles, it doesn't really bother me either way in 1.7.2 because they can be obtained via fishing. But having a crafting recipe would make sense and be less of a pain in the butt.
