Think about who in the right mind would spawn a creature like that in a world they may have spent days trying to perfect it, because all the wither does is kill everythin in its path and really it aint a good idea to spawn one
But if you spawn it for laughs, sure why not

Hey guys I have just changed my name from AidanNC to BlueProto
Just doing this so you know who it is

I would have to say the most useless thing (purpose wise) is a beacon. No one will waste resources on it and no one is gonna stay within the power-up range all the time. It is a GREAT decoration though. If not beacon than basically any gold tool (mostly hoe).
Why waste a somewhat rare ore on something that will break in no time?
Also, referring to previous posts about the 3D mode, I love 3D mode! I play my hardcore world with 3D on. Of course it is better with the glasses.

"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens" - Gimli, Son of Gloin.
Dead bush, bowls (you can't use them as fuel after eating soup), dead bush, golden weapons and golden armor. I like bats I have found many shafts with seeing them fly out of cave or squeaking.
...What about 3D Anaglyph mode? It does nothing but potentially give you a seizure and make it look ugly.
Endstone has a high blast resistance, so I'm sure it has plenty of uses.
Gold has tons of uses.
Emeralds are great as a currency, and are an expensive decorative block.
Bats can be used to find caves. (as a lot of people have already said)
The ender dragon egg can be used for decoration, and is the only block that teleports when mined.
In my opinion, lapis is a very cool block. It can be used as an expensive decoration. It can be used to dye wool or sheep. It also has a higher blast resistance than blue wool (which is the most similar block I can think of).
Dead bushes can be used as decoration, and add an interesting touch to deserts.
Snowballs are the only item that can be thrown at people and not cause damage or spawn mobs.
Oceans can be used for mob systems. (as others have already said)
Withers are definitely not useless. They give a rare item (nether star). Depending on how you use beacons, they can be very useful. Withers are also a very tough boss, which minecraft needs.
All of this depends on how you want to look at the word useless though. If useless means that the item is only different because of the texture, then there are plenty of useless items. I think that any item that looks different or is unique in some way can be useful.
I've never used 3d-Anaglyph mode the way it is supposed to be used, so I can't really comment on it.
I would say bats are the most annoying - i *#$%ing hate them, and am compelled murder every single one I come across. If you think about it, cats are also a realatively useless mob, but have a certain charm as pets.
Rotten flesh is a pretty annoying drop, too. It is realatively ineffective as a food source, considering its effects are short-lived/slightly detrimental. I ussually will have killed at least a pig or cow or two by the time rotten flesh pops up, so by then its useless as an alternative first food source.
I would say the most useless block is gravel - It's a source of constant annoyance when mining, creates lag when falling, and fullfills no function that cannot be served by sand, except obtaining flint. Absolute waste of shovels =/
I would say I use gravel primarily for making large ugly structures that borderline on constructive greifing.
Rotten flesh is a good item for feeding dogs. Gravel looks pretty nice making roads. And cats are good for aesthetic value. Bats, well, I gotta agree with you on that subject.
Dead bush. I find it funny that the people saying lapis is useless dont mention wool blocks. Wool and is colored variant are all used the same way as bricks, stone bricks, sandstone, netherbrick, endstone, any other "building" block. Villagers can be very very useful as youd know if you have ever seen tangoteks videos, with villagers and the right knowledge you can effectively never mine at all. So my vote goes dead bush as you cant even obtain it in survival (does ST work on it?) and out of any aesthetic blocks it looks the ugliest haha.
Dead bushes are only ugly when you play with the default pack. In my texture pack I designed them as a decorative, living plant, and I also saw them as living plants in other texturepacks as well. Because of this, I often use them for decoration in desert-styled buildings, either in flower pots or by planting them directly.
And you can get them in survival, simply by destroying them with shears, the same way you can obtain leaf blocks.
I think the most useless thing is a gold hoe, other gold tools are faster than other tools, but hoes have all the same speed.
I can't agree with other things mentioned as useless:
Bats: They make cute sounds, add atmosphere to the game and because I love bats in real life, I also like them in Minecraft.
Squids: Make the ocean look less empty
Silverfish: Give xp, and can be used on adventure/survival maps to make it more difficult.
Lapis: Great for decoration, I use lapis blocks for floors or pillars and use blue wool for decoration.
Emeralds: I sometimes use them for decoration, and of course for trading, sometimes I get awesome stuff from villagers like Diamond tools, enchantments or book shelves.
One item that is not completely useless, but very annoying is flint: I don't want to kill any animals so I don't need them for arrows (I get enough from skeletons), I only need a flint for a flint and steel, which I only use very rarely, usually only for nether portals or TNT. Most of them time flints are just annoying, when building gravel pathes I loose gravel because of them, and they waste inventory space.
Iron, Gold and Diamond hoes they're utterly useless, I always use stone hoes.

Leafeon used Magical Leaf!
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers what the Universe is for, it will be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
I go through stacks of enderpearls daily, and an ender grinder is the most efficient way to gain exp.
Indeed! I must aree with this!

3-D Anaglyph mode is still more useless.
Agreed

Wait a minute...is that a mod you were using?

click it, i dare you. Oh! This hat that I am wearing is NOT white hair! No, my name is not Ash Ketchum
There is no better way to destroy order, collapse civilization and lead to utter destruction, slaughter and plunder than diamonds.
Then again, I guess that makes them useful if you're really sadistic.
