Ever since I was updated to minecraft 1.5/1.5.1, all the items on my server with a damage value of -30000 or any negative number were reset to 0. This is makes it VERY hard to make pvp armor and other things.
In minecraft 1.4.7 and below, I use the /give command to give me an unbreakable item (-30000 damage value) by using this command:
/give Pokeluigimon 276 64 -30000
This would give me 64 diamonds swords that won't break until a REALLy long time.
In minecraft 1.5, I tried doing the same command:
/give Pokeluigimon 276 64 -30000 All this does if give me 64 diamonds swords with a damage value of 0.
How do you get items with a negative damage value on minecraft 1.5? Thanks! Oh and btw, Sethbling's supercraftbros is not as playable since the armor breaks after a short period of time in minecraft 1.5. I don't see why it matters to know, but unbreakable items are meant for pvp, minigames, etc.

You could try hacking the items to have Unbreaking 127. Enchantment level 127 is the highest technically possible value.
And besides, Unbreaking 127 lasts MUCH longer than item with -30,000 damage value.
Diamond Sword with Unbreaking 127 would have average of 198,374 uses before it breaks.
However, Unbreaking 127 on armor only makes it last 80% longer. This is because the chance is (60 + 40/(level+1))%

How in the world is something "a cheat no matter what"? Honestly, in minecraft, you do whatever the heck you want. Creative mode unbreakable items, anyone? Why would an unbreakable item be a cheat - unless specifically against the intent of the server/specific playstyle.
In any case, I think that nbt edit will help - giving you nigh-unbreakable items, or completely unbreakable items, by directly setting the values in someone's inventory. It's a little bit of a pain, but worth it for the amount of control you have.

Several minigames require one person to have 1 unbreakable wooden sword. A wooden sword breaks at only 60 uses. Hence the need for damage = -30000. If this is part of the gameplay of the minigame, it is not cheating.

The unbreaking effect does nothing for anything except picks, shovels, and axes. It's like applying infinity on a snowball and thinking you just got yourself infinite snowballs.
