"Never Dig Down!" ....Or Should You?
Several examples and tips on mining
A phrase that I hear over and over from my friends and such is "Never Dig Down!" It seems to be a tip on mining, obviously because you might run into lava and burn to death.... but is it the best advice?
There are certain times when this tactic for mining could be used. For example, when you have started off, maybe have stone tools, perhaps iron. You don't have a whole lot to use, so, why not? You dig down and, in best case scenario, find diamonds and other precious ore. In short, there are two other scenarios. One, dig down, kill yourself in a fiery death. And two, find nothing at all. So it is something of chance to dig down.
Then there are the times when you have EVERYTHING to lose. You go out on a great expedition. Diamond armor, full set of diamond tools, enchanted perhaps. Ready for anything! Except for falling in lava and of course, dying. But then, you could also be successful, find diamonds, ect.
So there are other ways of mining. Staircase mining, for example. I just made that name for it but it is a quite self-explanatory name and I think you can figure it out. It is when you dig down in a staircase manner to be more cautious. You can also spiral staircase too, I suppose.
So now we come down to the grand conclusion! Is digging down good or bad?
Six words: Water bucket and feather fall. LEEEEEEEROY!!!!!
I like acting like I'm in hardcore mode or it's real life. In either case you wouldn't "respawn" if you died, so I don't like to abuse the game like that to get things quicker. Personal choice of course, but unless you have some valuables (don't carry them) or tons of exp (enchant something) digging down isn't much of a problem unless you dislike dying.
The method Warfighter mentions works. But it can also easily fail terribly if you aren't standing exactly where you need to be. Now when it comes right down to it fi you are only going down a few blocks digging down isn't the worst thing in the world to do because you should be able to hear any lava before you break through to it but as a general rule of thumb it works perfectly.
All in all its just better not to do it because of all the ways it could go wrong.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
We should define what "digging down" means. Are we being literal, as in digging into the depths of the world? Or digging straight down, block by block in a 1x1 tunnel?
Yes, but what happens when the lava is too far away to hear, or there isn't any? There's more hazards then lava after all.....you could fall to your death or be eaten by a swarm of creepers or something.

I don't have super high sound on my laptop. And lava is just a gentle bubbling sound in contrast to its harmful nature. That is a good idea to headphone users or those with high speakers, though.Outkin, yes I think we are talking about a 1x1 tunnel in which ladders are placed inside.
Well if your placing ladders its reasonably safe, I think. Can you break blocks while holding shift to 'hang on' to a ladder? (Thats really adressed to anyone who would know, not necessarily you Zman.)

Never dig downwards; you might run into lava
Never dig upwards; you might surface in an ocean
Never dig sideways; you might find a cave with hostile mobs.
In fact, just don't dig at all. You're safer that way.
It's not to be taken literally. Digging in a downward fashion is usually fine. Often, arguably, it's even a "good idea." The point is, don't dig out the only block that's holding you up, unless you know what's underneath it. If you know what's down there, fine, go ahead and dig. If there's another block holding you up, fine, go ahead and dig. But don't dig out the only block holding you up, unless you know what's underneath it.
Dig 2x1 blocks down, left, right, left right,i use that method and so far i never fall directly into lava
Seriously digging has it's own risk so if you don't wanna die then don't even dig and so as hunting at night has it's risks and as so as exploring caves. It's part of minecraft. You don't wanna die play creative then or quit minecraft.
thank me later
I used to take some stone tools and dig down just for the heck of it. The "never dig down" rule really only applies when you have gear or are far away from your spawn.
Also
I've been walking around for miles, still no diamonds to be found. Maybe I should look underground.
I started digging a hole, drilling through dirt, then I fell through, landed in some water. What have I gotten myself into?
The method Warfighter mentions works. But it can also easily fail terribly if you aren't standing exactly where you need to be.
You can solve this by digging one block further down on one side, and sneaking towards the middle. A full sneak will not let you fall, but you will be just off the block. Aka if you let go of [Shift], you will fall. That's not what you want to happen, so, after doing a full sneak, you want to just barely nudge to the other side and you will always be within both blocks' hitboxes.
If you get good enough, you can jump right into the middle and not have to worry, like me
(mining straight down is the only way I go now because of my tactic, and mining 3 blocks down for each side ensures that I know what's 3 blocks below me)
"Don't dig down" Means not do dig the block you are standing on. It might be the only block separating you from a chasm or lava lake. Just dig a staircase, you'll get to diamond layer just about as quick with little to no risk & you won't need to craft a huge number of ladders/build a noob pole to get back up like you would with a 1x1 shaft or (safer) 2x1 shaft.

Stand in the middle of two blocks and mine one side at a time until you can no longer reach (about 3 blocks)

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

That works unless you dig down 3 blocks on one side, then hit lava on the other.
But, you see you'll be saved by the other block that doesn't lead into lava.
Trust me, I've been mining like this for a year now and never fell into lava or died.
