It's mostly caused by the xbox edition being released.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
Right. I have done a bit of thinking, and I have sorta come up with a reason as to why Minecraft went in a sour direction.
It mainly involves the development stages, and what they were turning out to be. I would say Alpha was mainly developing the gameplay aspect of Minecraft. How you play, why you do, how you do it. By the end of Alpha, everyone was happy with the game because it all worked, and it was fun.
I agree with this, but the main problem with the Alpha stage was that Minecraft was simplistic (which is awesome), but it was too simplistic. Face it, when you played alpha you probably said "wouldn't it be cool if Minecraft had X?"
It was the best time though. Nobody was talking about what MC shouldn't have (like what's happening now), but rather what it should. The forums were filled with the exploration of the game and ideas were everywhere.
Beta seemed to bring in cosmetic changes, and new items. 1.3 really stood out, as this was the time when they really started rolling out cool blocks that everyone loved but they also have additions that change gameplay. Beds were one of them. Later, new mobs, biomes, different generation, XP, new dimensions, and an ending - in a sandbox. Instead of adding things for players to use and enjoy, they added things the fundamentally change the game and block by block, feature by feature, you end up with something that doesn't play as it did in alpha and nobody knows why... It's because of all the little things changing the larger picture.
Agree completely. There were magnificent updates post-1.3, but in 1.3 I remember my friend and I talking about how the beds just don't "seem right" for the game.
If notch wanted to have an ending that worked well, he would have put it in alpha, but why didn't he? Because it didn't need an ending to be fun. Hunger seemed like a cool addition, but in the long run completely changed the way you had to play, forcing the player to find food and not build. The ending was a slap on addition so Notch could feel good about himself, like he had finished his game - but he didn't finish his game. Jeb continued to add things, once again changing the game... and now what?
I agree with your statement about the ending, but I'm not sure about the hunger.
Minecraft has a mode called "Survival Mode" for a reason, and they tried to incorporate survival-like aspects into the game, which is really awesome. Hunger could have been awesome as well, but yes, it was very poorly executed. It should have been added earlier into the game -- maybe even before the time mobs were added. Imagine how good it could have been.
Now the focus isn't on building the new cool track system, but to get the highest XP in the most efficient way. When people say Minecraft isn't an RPG, it really is. I don't know any other sandbox where XP exists, NPC villagers trade, bats are everywhere...
Bats are fine, but they could have been executed better, among other things in the game.
NPC villages were a little controversial before they were added because of the "alone" aspect and also people were wondering what was in store for the future in regards to the villages. Obviously trading was in mind... somewhere ... but the main thing was just adding more variation into the generator. 1.8 wasn't planned well ... at all, and everyone knows this.
I also wouldn't call MC an RPG. As Jetra said, Minecraft is a toolbox rather than a sandbox game.

If Notch stopped updating in alpha or beta, I would never play this game. Nor would probably a lot of people. The same old thing gets boring after awhile, and alpha/beta didn't have much to it.

You can still focus on an epic track system. Moreso now with the redstone update. The focus is whatever you want it to be...
Minecraft is still not an RPG, as you do not play the role of a character through a storyline, am i right?
It went downhill when dinnerbone joined. The combination of all their different idea clashing together and not being able to fit everything into the game... It just messed things up.
Never said I couldn't, I said the focus has changed.
You do, you play Steve in a survival quest to explore the land (adventure update) in creepy abandoned ruins (adventure update) collect XP (adventure update) upgare all your stuff using magic crap (adventure update) and mix things that don't exist together to make yourself have power ups and beat all the bosses (adventure update)... Sorry, but that kids wreaks of RPG. You pitch that to someone and it sounds like an RPG.
Separately things don't make an RPG, together in the wrong place the easily do so.
I don't have to explore the land, find ruins, collect XP, upgare (whatever that means) my stuff, etc in order to play the game. I could simply mine and build awesome towns and create my own world.
Not only did it add hunger, Something that if you even MENTIONED before notch went "herpader lets add hunger" your thread would've been torn to bits because hunger's not a fun mechanic... It's an unnessisary bar that becomes a boring chore to maintain.
Then it added enchantments, Which require hours of tedious grinding to obtain.
Why couldn't they have made it some form of magic anvil that allows you to hammer various gems in certain orders into your tools to obtain certain enchantments? Not only would it have encouraged mining over experience grinding, It also would've provided a fun sort of experimentation to see what gem orders give you what enchantment like brewing potions... Alchemy's actually FUN due to the experimentation and discovering new effects... Unless you like to spoil everything and use the wiki.
Then of course there's the issue of terrain generation but I'M NOT GETTING INTO THAT... Don't want this thread devolving into a flame war now do we?
Also, Testificates are and always have been ugly as balls... The people wanted pigmen, Not squidward.
And the enderdragon, For the longest time suggesting dragons in the game would get you MURDERED BY EVERYONE... Mostly because dragons are the lamest mythical creatures in all of nonexistence and they're overused to the point where any game that's fantasy/rpg in nature is expected to have dragons, Minecraft used to be all about ORIGINALITY.
The end itself was abit of a let down to be honest, It had so much potential...
As soon as endermen were added in 1.8 I was working on a thread suggesting an end dimension that consisted of an endless plain of pale white grass bathed in an endless night, Dotted with forests of greybarked trees with glowing blue leaves, Masive lakes of lumenescant green water with cuttlefishes swimming in them, And cities of endermen consisting of skyscraping towers made from the dull blue stone that lies under the vast plains.. But nope, Notch showed a barren rock with ugly obsidian pillars everywhere so I scrapped my thread and accepted that the end would be nothing more than a boring arena.

"Only a few find the way, Some don't recognize it when they do. Some don't ever want to..." ~Cheshire cat.
It went in a bad direction when Notch left. Jeb has no idea what kind of game this was intending to be and has no idea how to implement an RPG element. The way enchanting works is absolutely stupid, doesn't help that sharpess damage is completely random (Making PvP luck based, which is annoying, BY THE WAY) and that getting EXP is far too grindy and boring. My point is, Jeb wants us to use these new features but it's way too boring and uninteresting that most won't bother.
Personally,I think the upcoming redstone update will make it go in a bad direction. Minecraft wasn't meant to be technical. The odd basic redstone and pistons arent that bad,but all this more technical stuff will get on my nerves.
However I will still play the game until it hits Rock-Bottom.
You know what will make me play it even if more bad updates come. MORE PIE.

I agree. It doesn't help that Jeb is going to break more redstone contraptions. Those old school redstone computers from mid-beta? All broken. I wonder if Jeb is TRYING to make the game unenjoyable.
I see that in all your life you have not played a single RPG.
Because Minecraft is very far from being an RPG.
Sidenote: BRB Installing Fallout 2. That is a nice RPG.!
Whatever you say. With the elements Minecraft has and are still being added, It's basically Skyrim with a randomly generated world and dumber villagers.
It is a funny fact.
Many of the forum users actually hate / dont like minecraft.
That doesn't make a lick of sense, you could be spending time doing othe things like going to forums of games you like or even real life things, it's a waste of time to come here if you hate the game.

They dont give a damn about the game, they are just here for the attention.
I wouldn't say for the attention, just posting here as a normal forum. I'm mostly in the hardware section, where most of us there don't play Minecraft.

Not true in the slightest. I come to the discussion section to tell people my opinions. If they disagree, oh well.

I agree fully, Minecraft is an RPG in every way. And a rather bad RPG at that.
However I will still play the game until it hits Rock-Bottom.
You know what will make me play it even if more bad updates come. MORE PIE.
Be sure to quote me if you're replying, otherwise I won't notice.

Rather easily comparable in all honesty. My point is, Minecraft is an RPG now. If you say it isn't you're wrong.
I think by "bad direction" we all mean "direction we personally don't like"
That's what I mean anyway, Even if I no longer enjoy it moder nminecraft's still a good game that deserves the attention it gets. :y
To be honest, it doesn't. It gets way too much attention for what it really is, let's be honest.
Then why the hell are you still here then?
Just because I go on this forum does not mean I like Minecraft.
