Seeing as how mojang rakes in a decent amount of money from all versions of minecraft, i have to ask, at this point, why hasnt mojang built servers that can withstand large amounts of traffic?

~i dont run away from you....i walk slowly and it kills me that you dont care enough to stop me......You think this is truly the end hero NAH it has only just begun!
There are different servers for different things.
The login servers handle logins to minecraft.net where as a separate server handles multiplayer sessions (Which is probably what is down if you can't connect to servers)
Ah gotcha...well either way, they need better login servers.
Maybe the reason its down is because they're upgrading everything right now!
We can hope anyways... and I'm trying to stay positive.
If they were upgrading, they wouldve told us in advance.

One could hope they are upgrading them, but then again perhaps they have no idea of the significance of it. Not to state the obvious, but the 2 Minecons, the thousands of servers and the bazillion players must not have had an effect on Mojang of the importance of... GETTING THEIR DANG AUTHENTICATION SERVERS WORKING!
I'm new to SMP, I am the type of player that buys GW2 MMO and solos the entire game. lol
But this all reminds me of the big uproar over Diablo 3 and how you had to have a persistent online connection to Blizzard's servers in order to play. People were all upset over it (I passed on D3, even tho it would seem like a great game for a solo'er).
Well this is the same thing with Minecraft, isn't it? Their stuff goes down, and we're dead in the water. I guess I see why some people say they "hack" their software, so they don't need mojang in the loop? I'm new to all this stuff, minecraft is awesome and I wish I hadn't shrugged the game off for so long...
Now that I got a taste of SMP and started my own little homestead in a big angry mean grief-filled world (lol), I'm finding it hard to go back and just play lonesome SSP. Sigh. Back to waiting...
I've never understood why people seem to think 'NEW SERVERS' for stuff like this.
For most of your enterprise scale issues, throwing new servers at them would be like buying people in a city new cars to prevent traffic jams. It just doesn't work that way.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
Mojang has made alot of money, Maybe they still are. Maybe Notch is moving some servers to these other games he is making, which will never be as big as MineCraft. At the same time think of how long Minecraft has been here. Servers on minecraft have been up for so long. EA/Activision doesn't even keep there servers up this long and they also have less servers on a single game. Be grateful everyone!

He needs to at least consider the needs of the mc community first. I am glad that mojang is working on the issue at hand, but they seriously need to consider getting better servers, because the current ones they have seem to be going down more often

Then what does one do in this kind of a situation? Is it poorly managed hardware/software then and a team that's too small to handle the scale?

I laugh at this reasoning. Lemme break it down so I understand where you're coming from.
Mojang + Lots of money = Poorly managed authentication servers
Mojang + more money = Still bad authentication servers
Makes no sense. o.O
HOW IN THE HECK CAN YOU BE SO STUPID WHEN YOU MAKE SO MUCH MONEY THAT YOU CAN'T MAKE SURE THINGS WORK PROPERLY WITHOUT BREAKING?!?! Twitter figured it out, haven't seen a fail whale since. Perhaps Mojang should buy tips from em.

Well as someone who actually works in this field, when the servers "go down" its due to a few things.
1. The server actually crashed/something broke inside of it.
2. The internet service to the server location is down.
3. The login software is having issues.
Making the assumption that the software is ok, Both of the other problems could be fixed easily. I don't think the login software is that taxing on the system (just a guess) so upgrading to larger servers wouldn't probably help.. BUT if they keep having server crashes, getting newer more reliable servers would help... or maybe some sort of redundant system.
And same with the internet, if they are having issues with there current provider they either need to switch providers, or get a redundant system, so if there main feed goes down it switches to a backup service..
None of this is very complicated, infact its the most basic networking stuff..
Mojang could use the power of P2P to release updates. That way, when a new update comes out, there will be no issues at all downloading it.
How P2P works for those who don't know:
Say Mojang uploads their update to their newly-created P2P (Peer to peer) network.
2 million people simultaneously start the download, but as they download, they also start uploading what they have downloaded. In other words, they are seeding the update. Then, when more people come to update, they start leeching on those who have already seeded the update, and there are no slow speeds at all, because everyone is contributing to the download speed.
This works especially well for large files that many people want access to.

Also a good way of spreading viruses. I'll stick to the client. (Which has nothing to do with this current topic)
Havn't been able to log into my own server all morning...
Which begs the question... how does it really work? I'm able to log into MC...but then not into my server (bad login)?
Thanks!

Click that biatch.

Yeah I concur with Jose, they would tell us..it would be a big deal, jeb would get on twitter and tweet how awesome they are...
But they haven't, which means they are just down....again.
*Keeping hopes up*
Maybe it's a surprise early christmas present?
OT : I really agree they should...
@nivram
They could just do what tons of other companies do, get servers in a different country.
