As you might have guessed, I am unsatisfied with originality nowadays. I don't mean to sound like a butthurt veteran, but 2 years ago, the servers were definitely more original. I remember the Endless Tunnel Project, which is pretty much self explanatory. Even a regular server back then, which wasn't vanilla, but didn't have 100 different plugins, seemed original, even if there were tons of server like it. Now everyone is trying to be the #1 server with the most plugins and the most amount of people. Back then it was about having a relaxed community to have fun. Now it seems everything is becoming commercialized - "Donate 5 dollars to be instantly whitelisted!" There was such a variety of things to do back then. Now everything is Factions, towny, tekkit, prison, Stuck up "serious rp", and "N U M B E R O N E S E R V E R W E A R E B E T T E R T H A N E V E R Y O T H E R S E R V E R W E A R E O B N O X I O U S L Y T R Y I N G T O G E T Y O U R A T T E N T I O N!!!!"
I understand you gotta make some money to keep a server running, but I'm sure theres better ways to raise money. Also, there are so many prison servers! Another thing is the community. I can't believe how bad the community has became. I remember when you could go on a pvp server and not be spawnkilled by some snot nosed 12 year-old with diamond armor and a diamond sword. People seemed to get along better too. Now everyone is so concerned about killing the entire world. I know its pvp but theres no fun in being killed every three seconds. A fair fight is a lot to ask for since they care more about being an ass than allowing everyone to play nice and have fun.
In addition to lacking originality, I think "serious rp" servers are the bane of good servers. Rules such as "metagaming, powergaming, no floating structures" just takes away minecraft's charm, to me. I think serious Rp is the bane of good roleplaying, too, since you barely have free will since you'er being dictated by nonsense rules half the time. I think good roleplaying needs free will more than some of the absurd rules I've seen.
I try to go on vanilla servers but it's not the same, namely because of the community. Vanilla servers never really last more than a month or two anyhow.
Sorry for my butthurtness. It's acquired over time.

If you really think that servers are so plain and boring, make one yourself, that's what I did. If you are unhappy with something, don't rant about it, make what you want to happen instead.

I'm poor. I don't have resources to host a server or buy one. It doesn't seem reliable to rely on donations, especially when first starting out before I get players. I can't rent one because my mom doesn't trust recurring payments and theres no hosts who do non recurring. Theres not much I can do :(. Theres only so much I can do with hosting it on my PC.
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY ONE!
I mean seriously, with the new release of 1.4 I found a TF2 server, and guess what? The owner wasn't on and everyone was just punching each other at spawn, plus we couldn't choose classes, teams, or hit any buttons! I just want old servers back, with themes and adventure. I mean my friend's server was super fun, I mean we had this one adventure where the OPs would not be in creative, and we had an adventure for diamonds, we made tents and everything, and that was fun.

I have to agree with the OP. The servers were fun in those days. I remember this one server I was on. It was called RedLight (Back in beta...) and it was fun. It was a smallish community that was friendly. The mods and the Owner were friendly as well. I joined in a town called pigvale. It was built in the valley of a mountain. The furthest end away from the entrance was a tundra which I built my small cabin from. I was even able to help out a player's father to play minecraft. It died in 1.8.1 though. I still hate 1.8.1 ever sense.

I've been through three major servers, I'm now on my fourth, and I can represent the Minecraft Server community. I have to dozens of servers, many of which fit your description. And I will always ask the admins, why do they have all these seemingly useless plugins? "I hope to get my server famous and at the top! Big servers work really hard, so we try to work hard too!" The first server I went to, it had chest shops and world protection as the big "Stand out plugins". Chest shops, a good way for the community to run a capitalist enviroment. World protection, a way to prevent greifers. Fair enough. The second server I went to, had TONS of plugins, the big one being Mob Disguise, used by admins to spy on players. It was heavily abused. The third server would rotate thier plugins that they used to keep everything new. The fourth and current server, has only warop portals, used for the massive map, and chest shops, for currency. I felt that the fourth felt the most at home for me. The thing is, you should go in a SEARCH, not skim a server. See how long its been running, meet the staff, find out the plugins and dig deeper into them. How, in my example, Server 1 and Server 4 are completely different, I'll tell ya that. But Server 1 was in ye olde server days, and was fresh in. Not all new servers will be like the old ones, that is true, but many old players are trying to make new ones like the old ones. Just learn a lot more about a server then just judging it by plug-ins. You never know, you might start liking plug-ins.
I totally agree. I remember back when I joined, playing on simple servers with none of these junk plugins. When I started playing Minecraft multiplayer, I made a "Friend" who gave me most of my knowledge about Minecraft. That server has been since taken down.
I then tried a newer server, which was horrible. The community sucked, there was way too much abuse by the admins, and about every server I got into now has the same problems.
(P.S. If someone is willing to start a Vanilla server, please do so. I think I speak on behalf of the other posters that we would enjoy this.)
Servers are indeed pretty bad, hence why I don't go multiplayer anymore. I've set my own server up before anyone complains about it, it's a private server for me and my friends to play the game on and we all have fun.
However, when any of us try to play a public server, we instantly lose faith in ever joining a pub server again.
I am very jealous of you... I want to join XD

Hey everyone, I completely agree with you guys, especially about RP and how people host their servers. I am currently hosting a whitelisted vanilla co-op server, but I do plan on hosting a RolePlay server in the future, I just need a team... I'm planning on making my roleplay server a bit more freelanced. Less rules, and more fun to play.
Anyway, if any of you would like to join my vanilla server just shout at me. I'd be happy to let you all play with us
We have about 6 players, all good people, at the moment, and its COMPLETELY vanilla.
Being a server owner myself, I think i can speak for all of us when i say, Quit Whining! IT's not easy to run a server, There are 1,000's of servers and your saying that every single one is the same? I guarantee you, THat if you spend for than 5 minutes researching server's you'll find one you like!
If your looking for a server use this
Tex's Guide to finding a Quality Server
1.What do you want your peers to be like?
IF you don't want 12 y/o's who spawn kill there's an answer
Adult only severs
2. What type of server do you want to play on?
Search for terms or plugins that would relate to that type of server
3.Do you want a fair server?
Look at the donator perks that will give you a clue (Paying to fly is a good example of an unfair server)
4.Do you want a small server?
Look at the amount of player slots and post on the server page.
5.Should anyone be able to join?
If not than add whitelist to your search
If that does not work
Make a list of everything you are looking for in server and make a post in the looking for section! (In this section the server owners will try and court you)
Have something to add? Pm me or reply and if i like it i'll add it to the list

Getting a machine to run a small server (5 people) for you and your friends is actually really cheap. I got an old computer for only $20 that runs great.
I use to play on only one server and it was magical. Ever since that server had to be shut down, I haven't enjoyed multiplayer. The nowadays servers are plain horrible, least the ones I visited. (And yes, I mostly avoid overly populated servers)
I completly agree with you that everybody's trying to be the #1 server, and it's always donate this to get that, vote for us to aquire that. People just don't play old school survival anymore, everything is PvP, factions, tekkit and other things people thought of. I honestly don't mind those, I just wish they didn't overpower the old school SMP servers.
Originality in prison servers is nonexistent! RP servers are constricting! PvP servers only lead to spawncampers! I agree with you on every single one of those points! I'm unsure what servers were like back in beta since I've only played from 1.2.3, but they must have been better than this, since the current server community has hit bottom. Lets just hope they don't pull out any diamond shovels...
How would you like it if you were calmly rping with someone, and a random player comes up to you, morphs into a dragon, and eats you? How about if everyone was doing that? RPing would not be fun if people just thought of outrageous powers only to be better than you. This is why there are rules against powergaming. It's just no fun to the other players.
Same thing with metagaming. How would you like it if you're hiding in a cave, and a player deliberately uses your nameplate to find you? Wouldn't that be annoying? I don't know about you, but if I'm trying to be stealthy, I don't want to be found because of some letters floating above my head.
As for floating structures, the rule is a reasonable one when talking about random floating houses and such. Some things may work, such as a floating city, but I'm sure the owner would let it stay if it actually looks good.

2 years ago minecraft was classic, all you could do was build or spleef
Your right minecraft nowadays is bad..for the wrong reasons, you're saying its bad because it doesn't appeal to you, if servers are commercialized to gain money that's because servers require money
And to criticize " a serious rp server" at the fact of disallowing builds is bad criticism because some people don't want to see dirt houses everywhere and if you don't that doesn't make it bad
Being upset of a server about a "12 year old snotnose kid in diamond armour that wants to spawnkill" is not the servers fault or reflects on server originality
I could go on to break down your post but to be truthful minecraft has it's limits and there will eventually be a point where things will repeat (which is inevitable if it is a good server idea) or to the point where there is nothing massively impressive that will happen to servers at all
But like I said, I agree servers nowadays are even if you say so for the wrong reasons, my opinion is that most servers are usually about earning ranks and gaining power, and most administrators are 12-14 year olds with no intelligence or are power hungry and it's insulting to be badly moderated or to be in a server with 20-50+ kids spamming the chat with bull
I completely agree with the OP. We have too many CoD fanboys on minecraft, trying to turn the game into CoD. I just want to go on a vanilla server, and just explore the world and settle in a small fort and live there. Not having to worry about some ing douchebag that thinks Minecraft is a ing MLG clan tryout. Jesus, how did Minecraft become this way? Everything is ing "PVP HURR HARDCORE MLG IMSOPRO IN MY FULL ENCHANTED DIAMOND ARMOR, I HAVE SO MUCH SKILL U SUK LOL". I'm also tired of huge square spawns with square stores everywhere. No creativity whatsoever, just a bunch of cubes, no design. Too many PVP servers IMO.
