I've been thinking about this for a while. Has anyone noticed that minecraft seems post-apocalytpic? Think about it. There are abandoned mineshafts, abandoned strongholds, dark dungeons and ancient temples. I've made some paragraphs of these implications below.
The burning question I have now, is, how did this apocalypse happen? An invasion from a far off dark dimension? There are undead monsters and abandoned structures littered across the world. This suggests a large scale war between either medieval civilisations or armies of monsters. There are signs of this everywhere;
skeletons wielding bows, zombies carrying weapons and armor, villages being regularly attacked by hordes of zombies. It is most likely that the fallen medieval state(s) was/were taken down by the undead, but who would lead them? Who could command monsters into destroying a civilisation? I believe that endermen may be responsible. Why else would their dimension be where the final battle is based? But that just brings up more questions, such as how the beings commanded monsters and why.
Next up is why you would have so much freedom. In a medieval state a hermit living among the woods in his mansion/hut would likely be brought to the public eye, but that never happens. The only remnants of civilization left are religious settlements out on the plains or in the desert. A hermit claiming land for himself would most likely be arrested by the kingdom's soldiers, then either be brought to trial or executed. This never happens. Also, how could there be a medieval state without castles or cities? After all, we never run into gigantic ruined medieval cities in our travels, do we? The only explanation is that minecraft is based in a small medieval state that came to rise through the efforts of a creative hermit, only to have his/hers buildings torn down and forgotten, and so repeating an endless process of construction and destruction.
Don't see what I'm saying? Watch this video below.
For those of you who don't what that was, that was the music video by captain sparklez (Animator). The video shows a king's rise to power (Or a morning stroll) and the destructive end to a marvelous kingdom. Could this have happened to the lands that we walk in? Strongholds could have easily been underground castles that kings dwelled in. But why is there an end portal? My explanation to this is the kingdom's sorcerers creating a portal to another unknown dimension, a dimension said to contain hoards of precious ores. But instead dark creatures leapt out and lead the undead into a massive war against the humans. Eventually, the capital of the kingdom is overwhelmed, leaving thousands dead and a kingdom in ruins. Steve is the lone survivor of the conflict, or perhaps even the former king, who is seeking revenge. As seen at the end of the game, Steve finally defeats the endermen and their dragon, thus so taking his vengeance.
Finally, we'll answer one more question. What about the villages? The villagers, as I said earlier, are the remnants of a grand religion that dominated the kingdom, but died out as soon as the kingdom fell. The priests took it upon themselves to rebuild civilization. Eventually after years of struggle, they manage to create villages across the land and defend themselves from the undead using secret magic that lay dormant in their bloodline from their ancestors. Using it, they create iron golems. Soon they meet the former king, but not recognizing him, they take him to be a traveler and treat him as any other stranger.
There we have it! My theory on minecraft's theme and story. I'm not saying this is the right one, so people are welcome to post their own opinions/theories. Now I know someone is going to say "WHO ING CARES!" Well I do, I'm interested in theories like this, and if you aren't, get off this page, don't post hate mail.
BTW, just a little update since this thread was bumped. I've noticed that another topic is addressing us indirectly and saying that they get annoyed by us spending time on thinking up theories and ideas of minecraft's setting/time/theme. I don't want a flame war, and so do other people. A half a dozen of supporters from that thread probably found this topic since I replied to theirs. The topic is called "Does anyone else get annoyed by these people?" if you want to check that out.
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

I personally don't think Villagers are humans, they're Testificates, so the Player being the king of them doesn't make sense to me. Nor does that fact that the player is a king at all if I'm honest.
I get the feeling that strongholds and abandoned mineshafts are the bones of an old civilisation that the player is just as puzzled by as we are, since we are the player.
Why these structures are there we will never know. We can theorise as much as we like, but there is no real evidence, and every player will just make up their own story anyway. Likewise, why we are there is as much a mystery.
Here's a Minecraft machinma, that you may have already seen, that gives it's own take on the whole 'post-apocalyptic' theme of Minecraft. I reckon it's worth a look:
I've thought Minecraft was apocalyptic for a long time. Hence there is zombies, mutant creatures, no humans, why wouldn't it be apocalyptic? According to my book, Minecraft once had 3 races: Pigmen, Humans, and Testificates. You are the only human left, the pigmen are extinct, and Testificates are unintelligent.

Holy bagels! You're right!
I guess I always sort of though of it as the dawn of man, but now that you mention all the abandoned stuff, it's a good point!
This kinda reminds me of Adventure Time;that show on Cartoon Network. In that cartoon the main protagonists are in a post- appocalyptic world. There are mutant creatures and monsters. There are also hints that the world went through nuclear war (The Mushroom War), thus creating all of those monsters. Finn the main protagonist is also the last of the humans, since they were probably wiped out during the war. This is just my opinion but I think Adventure Time and Minecraft have some sort of relation.
I definitely think that Minecraft is post-apocalyptic. My own theory is that it's all because of the zombie plague, which started in the Nether and made its way to the Miners' world through the brief dimensional anomalies that occur when lightning strikes pigs, transporting a zombie pigman here and the pig Notch only knows where(a grim fate). Some stupid Miners just had to attack the zombie pigmen without being ready for the fight, died, contracted the zombie plague, and proceeded to wipe out nearly the entire species. In canon, Steve? is the only known Miner left alive.
The main question though isn't how it happened, the truly puzzling question is how long ago? Miners don't age. It could have been millennia, and Steve? is still here.
Wow. I feel sorry for the poor guy.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Well I figure I'll make my own theory. It has has similarity to yours but in more detail.
1000's of years ago a human race made cities and mineshafts. There were two factions. One of them practiced the dark arts and the other tried to stop this (I'll call them Followers of light.) The people of the dark arts practiced necromancy and other evils. These necromancers stayed out of sight of the opposers making dungeons and strongholds.
The necromancers believed the dark arts was the future for Minecraftia. It would save them from all perils. The Followers believed that it wasn't and it'll result in the end for the human race.
The dark arts fought with the undead sending skeletons and zombies at the Followers. The Followers fought well and easily overcame the dead. So the dark arts decided they needed something more powerful, the creeper. This wasn't enough though, they needed more. Something that'll finish the followers for good.
They decided to make a strange kind of stone, endstone. WIth this they created a portal frame in all of their strongholds. When the first portal frame was completed, a surge of energy was made and everyone in Minecraftia felt it. The Neromancers grew taller, skinnier, there eyes turned to glowing purple, eventually making the Enderman. The surge of energy created two realms, the Nether and the End.
The Followers struggled against the Enderman. Their teleportation surprised the Followers and killed thousands. To make matters worse, the surge of energy made all dead bodies come to life. The leaders of the Followers commanded that their military focuses on the destruction of this strongholds. They were doing good, the necromancers were surely be defeated. The undead's army was no match for the numbers of the Followers. That is until the Necromancers found out how to access the Nether.
That was when the Wither was summoned. That one flying beast completely laid waste to entire cities. The monster was defeated at cost of millions. Now this was when the dark arts gained the advantage. The army was hurt badly. Now the Wither did more than kill armies, it killed crops. The Followers eventually lost too many and fell under anarchy. The human race was finished.
Now a person named Steve created an isolation chamber. It was expensive and took a lot of time to make to make so he could only make one. He stored himself in this for the years to come. He gained eternal youth with this machine but lost parts of his memory.
Only one human-like race survived, testificates. The Followers granted them iron golems against the undead as a final hope. The testificates were smart but weren't smart enough to make a massive civilization like the humans.
Now Steve's machine broke and he awakes to a new world. Only signs of human civilization is mineshafts and strongholds. The dark arts rule the world now. It's up to him to kill the leader.
That is my theory, may need some polishing up in some places. Well that was fun. What'd you think?
What if The End caused the apocalypse on the overworld?
I smell a plot line...
Seems plausible. It makes more sense than waking up on a beach and randomly invading a Dragons home for no reason at all.
I also thought of this:
You know those faces on Soul Sand? It would make sense that those are the faces of humans from a past civilization in the overworld. It would also explain why it's called soul sand.

That's nice, but for those who wonder, it's a topic to bring up, at the very least. 8|
