Not concealing your gender is "flaunting" being female?
Approximately half the people in the world are female. It's not the sort of thing that should be considered unusual, and a woman should not have to pretend she's a man to be treated with simple respect as an individual. "Male" is not the default state for personhood, with female as some kind of special status deserving of better or worse treatment.
Why should gender even be a consideration in interaction with someone? Obviously it's important if you're trying to decide if it's someone you might be able to mate with to produce offspring, but other than that? Not much. This is the INTERNET, people; we're not meeting face to face, much less making babies here! All we can exchange here is data: ideas, insights, and movement of our virtual Steves and Stephanies around the Minecraft Landscape. Gender should matter about as much as blood type.
Now sure, knowing a person's gender can be useful in social interaction, to get some idea of where they're coming from culturally and experientially. But so can ethnicity, socioeconomic background, education, and all that. Underlying it all is this: a unique individual person. You treat that person as a person, and all persons have a constellation of personal traits, of which gender is just one, sometimes important, usually not.
Sheesh.

Those are called trolls. Even boys suffered by the hands of trolls. Point? Heck, you being admins could be due to you being girls as I have personally experienced on many servers. Boys tend to become gullible to girls and girls tend to bond with each other. I don't see how you're having it that bad. Oh and no, it's not just one server that I've seen this, but on almost every server I've been on that had females since December 2009, otherwise I would not be here posting.
Yes, "boys" can be asses, but those are called trolls. Trolls are always asses to everyone. If anything, this group is going to attract more trolls because they now have a specific target to attack and focus their efforts on. You need to differentiate between actual sexism (i.e. negative discrimination towards women when it comes to rights, status, etc. in normal social interactions) and trolling (i.e. kids joining the server to get some kicks out of certain gullible people by insulting them in any way possible).
That's ****ing stupid, seeing as "offensive" is completely subjective. I could be offended by moustaches.
lol. yeah, i'm not a big fan out zero-tolerance either... i like to put myself in the shoes of the accused... what if *i* was the one being accused of wrong-doing... i would want to be treated fairly, and not get a ban on the 1st offense.
harassment in-game solution: /mute for words... with a warning & explanation that what they're doing is wrong, and that future consequences & punishment will be more severe next time.
and /jail for whatever the squat this is ?
the real-life solution is a little more complex tho... we might need an actual expert to address this issue.
I hate to stereotype, but it stems in a large part from gamers being nerds who either do not get the attention they crave from females, or who are socially inept enough to not know how to interact with other people... or, of course, both.
This is the typical "blaming the victim" mentality. You're essentially absolving guys of responsibility for their actions. Girls, and everybody else, should be able to play games online just like you, without being constantly sexually harrassed or threatened. No matter how many used-up excuses you spout, that's the bottom line.
1st time i read it... what i read into it was that they were trying to offer solutions (change skins) to the problem (harassment)... but yes, after i re-read it, i did see your point... but i hope you see my point Staonopao: we've identified the problem... we should be offering solutions to it...
Now, if they just joined the server & started this behavior, then a quick response, "Troll..." might get them to back down (if no Admins are online)... Or maybe just /ignore them
Point is Staonopao, i would like to know what you think the solutions are for various in-game, IRL situations
actually, the title of the thread is Why Should Girls Be Treated Differently In Video Games ? And when i saw the title, i didn't know this thread would be about harassment. lol
I agree with what everyone is saying but I also think this works the other way too. Because of Stereotypes, even a guy in a girl skin can be give items when they join a new Minecraft server just because they are "weak". I am all for this thread, but Its turning into random people hating at guys in general.
Yeah... It needs to be understood that the guys described in the first post are not necessarily young, they are simply immature. Not all boys are like that.
I think you will find that you are being treated poorly because most of the people who play this game are little 10yr old boys, who have no sense of whats right and wrong, and who obviously don't have parents that teach them proper ethics.
The way our world is going, well, its sad.
I am currently raising a daughter, who is now about 3mo old, and I have already started making plans for teaching her proper ethics, and especially protecting her from the train wreck we call the internet.
I used to have a really nice creative server, where one of our moderators was a female, about my age. She and I had a very professional relationship, and we allowed anyone to enter our server. I would give you the server address, but it was lost when Minecraft came out of the beta phase.
Good luck on your quest to find a better server, and more respectful players. Try to search for servers owned by adults, and not little boys.
Really i'm surprised a game's a game, its for boys and girls.
So sorry to any girls who get mistreated.
No one really cares, unless you emphasize it like you want us to give you free ****.
