I average about 30-60 fps on Normal, Fancy, Max FPS, with Optifine installed. But on the Snapshots, I can get around 70 or 80 fps on Far, Fast, Max FPS.
I get around the mid 20's to the mid 30's with Fast graphics and Normal render distance on a normal world. I can sometimes get below that.
I get about 20-60 on a superflat world with the same settings (Fast graphics and Normal render distance). If I'm lucky I can get around 70 and 80 fro a few seconds, but that mainly happens when I'm looking at the ground.
All this is with Optifine and the Faithful texture pack too. I know it's no the best but it runs smoothly.
Fast/fancy (maxed out everything), I get approximately 100fps at 1920x1200 resolution. I have a Core 2 Quad 2.66GHz, 6GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 465, and a solid state drive, but I attribute the FPS completely to the video card because it is the most important part of the equation. You could probably build a system similar to mine for under $1000.
With vanilla/default textures, far/fancy/everything no optifine gets me around 100 fps. With multi-core optifine, same settings, I get around 140 fps.

EDIT: FTB gets 60-70FPS far/fancy near the monument, farther out it goes back up to normal (if not higher).
Shaders (not yet tested with vanilla) dropped it down to 25-30 FPS. Playable, but not really worth it. I don't have time to tweak all the settings right now, but I expect afterwards it might hit 50FPS or so.
I basically have the same build as fm87. Just a different GPU really, motherboard doesn't affect performance. So I usually get 300 with shaders everywhere. Graphics maxed as always. Lowest I've gotten is 100 FPS.
Just wondering, but do you guys get lower performance on average when openGL is turned on? I get like 100fps less...
Anyways, fullscreen at 1080p I get about 65 -70 fps using the ultra preset of sonic ethers mod with maxed minecraft settings minus openGL and with an increased view distance (it's about far+normal put together). Dunno what it is with unmodded minecraft and I ceebs checking.
Gigabyte GTX 670 (overclocked past the factory overclock), [email protected], 8GB of ram and minecraft is running on a crucial M4 SSD.
Get a load of this:
Fps (used Fraps)
Super flat = 300 +-3
Normal = 300 +-4
Normal in nether with pulsar circuts all around me while derping and spawning ghasts everywhere and setting off tnt = 290 +- 10
Why Can I Move out of the 300 range?
*Found It out My memory was allocated soooooooooo crazy
I use mods all the time which make it run at like 50 to 100
Normaly like 100 to 500 ranging from what Im doing

Flatlands can go to about 300.

With 256X256 texture pack I get around 200fps, but it also depends on map.
I used regular map to test.
Specs.
Gpu: Amd radeon HD 6850.
Cpu: Amd FX-8150 8-core processor 3.6Ghz
Ram: 8 gigs DDR3 1600 Mhz
Hardrive 1Tb
I use optifine multicore.
Why did you get a bulldozer cpu? They are supposed to suck.

No that would be a double negative.
I get about 60 frames on average. (vsync enabled)
Graphic Settings
Graphics: Fancy
Smooth Lighting: Off (when it is turned to On, my frames go down to 50)
3D Anaglyph: Off (my eyes become irritated like hell with or without 3D glasses on...)
Particles: All
Render Distance: Normal (I can turn it to Far and get 50 continuously, but I don't want something odd happening since I have a 32 bit OS)
Performance: Max FPS (Balanced gives me a constant 50-60 frames, and Power Saver give me a constant 40 frames; keep in mind that vsync is enabled)
View Bobbing: On (I'd much prefer feeling like a walking person rather than a gliding ghost)
Advanced OpenGL: On (to be honest, I have no idea what this does)
Clouds: On
Now if I turned vsync off with these exact settings still in effect, I'll get about 100-250 frames.
Mods
None, I don't even know how to install optifine or any other mods.
Framerate in a superflat world
I have no idea, I normally don't play on superflat.

I suppose that is true as well. I was reading "terribly" as "especially."
On my laptop I get around 60 FPS, although it dips down to 30-ish at times.
On Servers i'll say about 23-30
Minecraft is suprisenly playble dispite little FPS
