I was thinking everybody would just spawn en masse in the spawn area, find their friends, and run off in different directions. That's why I wanted the spawn area to be in the middle of the ocean, so that even on far render distance, you're not sure what lies in that direction.

Im wondering... is the map actually being custom made in MCedit or something,
or is it just a natural world that will be modified to have less ores and goodies?
another thing; if this civ idea works out and is popular on the first run, then would it be possible
that the server could run again, and again, each time featuring a new world and civs have to be rebuilt?
That way the server could be fun and entertaining a lot longer than most servers, and is unlikely to die off.
Not only that, but this server gametype would become famous sort of how Dwarves vs Zombies has become famous in the last month or so, if it would replay. And, I LOVE the blog idea that poonjab was saying about, to be posted after it was over. it would be a great way to see what was going on with the other groups too!
(Ratmancer, are you the sole leader of this project, or is there anyone else?)

That is a good idea, but we would need a plugin or modification to the server then, to give each player a free boat each time
they spawn. else swimming would take a LONG LONG time to get ashore.
Ratmancer, I dont know if there is any official way to apply for being on whitelist,
But my username is Bakedtoast.
I really think this server would be fun to go on, and while I cannot commit to being on EVERY
time, I can promise I will go on as often as possible, whenever I can.
So, If you could please add me to the Whitelist, I would be very grateful.
Also, the 2 hours each day, what time would that be? Also, what time zone is it set for?
I've made a rough draft of a map in WorldPainter. I don't know the scale of resources that you'd like, so I haven't tampered with ore distribution. Some of the landmasses look odd, and the cave generation needs to be increased. Worldpainter doesn't allow mineshafts and dungeons to generate randomly so I will use my mapmaking skill to add spawners in mini dungeons throughout the world. I may add ruins and possibly random loot, but nothing extreme. Please let me know if there are any specifics in design I should follow.

There ain't much left of the world these days. The gods have forsaken us, there's no denying that. But still you press on. For what? A chance to sift through the ashes one last time? The hope to one day be called a hero? Whatever your reason, you've got a lot of work to do. The corruption won't leave without a fight, so you better get started.
The map is currently being custom made by Poonjab1_0. I appreciate your enthusiasm inferachnid though. Contact Poonjab and see if he will let you help out if you are interested though it is not of my concern if he prefers to work without you.
I prefer spawning the population onto the continents myself. I think the main reason is because if everyone spawns in one place, it gives an aura of unity in a sense. I think it would be far more interesting if everyone was divided and split, creating conflict. Although, this is probably rooted with my fascination for conflict within society and the plausibility of this sense of unity does not hold much water logically. The act of spawning is more important than we think though, because it sets the mood for the whole scenario.
We will cross the bridge of hosting another map when we come to it.
As for time, I am thinking the end of the work and school day, maybe 4pm-6pm, the specific US time zone will have to cater for the majority of the population of the server so it will be a point to look into.
If you wish to be notified when we the wheels start turning concerning the project, send me a message, although we are looking around next year.

In that case, we'd need mods that have multiple spawn points, and need to determine which continent people start on somehow. The most fair option is to have a randomized system, but some people will want to play with their friends, so some form of sorting groups based on size into the three continents could be used.
Also, for the times: The west coast hits 4 PM when the east coast hits 7. The east coast hits 9 when the west coast hits 6. I think those are both perfectly reasonable timeframes for the simulation. Some people on the east coast such as myself may take a break for dinner, but hey, food is yummy.

there is this plugin called "player distribution" or something like that. I can make it so the worldborder is around the custom world and set it so maybe groups of 10 spawn in different areas? and I would love to have somebody helping with the map. I have the basic shape, ocean and continents down. Now I have to add detail and make the world and continents more believable and unique. Kind of have specializations so people need to trade to get new items. I will only post progress about the world if ratmancer says to since this is his shindig.

There is only one issue with that; a lot of people here may be adults playing not kids, becuase kids arent exactly into politics. And most
adults have a job. Thus, adult s in the west coast won't be able to play, if they get off at 6pm. Take myself for one. I LOVE this server, but im 17 and have an after school job from 4pm to 6pm, in the west coast.
Perhaps it would be possible to run the server in two 1-hour sessions, so that people like me could play from 7pm-8pm, and people in the east coast can play also from 7pm-8pm, and those who can, can play on both?
OR, we could run it for 4 hours a day instead, which, although allowing more to be accomplished in one day, would increase the rate at which things get interesting. Also, it would allow more people to play if it was a four hour stetch, esp if the commitment was still a minimum of 2 hours.

On that note poonjab, i decided to do you a favour. I put a little post in Vech's super hostile thread, telling any worldbuilder who is bored that they could help you if you want them to
Also. is there anyone here who is good at running/making servers and using/making plugins for them? we will need that resource to speed up the project.

I can run the server, I have ran a few before. Can't make the plugins but there are already plugins to do 99% of this stuff.
Not exactly. the server is the one holding us up. we need one that is affordable and able to handle 100+ players. I have my own private server for 24 people and I have been working on the map by myself so far. I have found a few chunk errors but I am tweaking the world constantly so I can fix it all up and make it work.
I can't belive how much i actually LOVE this server! even thoguh it isnt even NEAR release,
I find myself constantly thinking about it. For example, I debated this question with a friend:
What will players on the server use as a basic currency?
We both agreed that in the "first age" there would only be simple bartering between players
using any goods for trade. Then my friend suggested they may use gold ingots, but i thought no.
All the early economies had something valuble/useful as a currency, and gold is far from that in minecraft. Then he suggested emeralds, but that would only be valuble if there were villagers nearby, and only if nobody murdered all the villagers there.
I cannot wait to see players take the helm of a new "earth" and develop their own civilizations. It'll be the best!
(ratmancer, you have like the best ideas out there!)
Ive thoght of another stumbling block though: By the time the server is ready to be released, you will need to change the plugins once more, to suit any updates the game may come out with, and that will take time. By then, maybe even the next update will release.. and unless this server hits the road soon, It may never do so!

how much does a server that big (say for 170 players or so) cost to run per month?
I think we will move towards purchasing our own server. Most servers for rent, at maximum, offer a capacity of 100 players. 100 players should really serve as a minimum to serve the purpose of the scenario. 100 players equates to ~33 players on each large continent, assuming equal distribution, which does not leave much room for a great number of tribes. If we had 150 or 200, this would make a lot more room for populated tribes to thrive, although this would double the rate of degradation of our smallish map.
Regardless, problems arise with our own server. I live on the other side of the planet for our american players, so timezone and latency make it hard to run a server from here.

If the server is purchased, I can setup all the plugins and software for the server, and either teach someone how to run it, or help.
One way to solve this problem is a one time entry fee to the server. For now let's say the fee is five dollars and one-hundred people are joining the server. Right off the start you have five-hundred dollars to run the server. I have no idea how expensive it is to purchase and run a server of that size but I would assume that five-hundred would cover it for at least four-months. The entry fee would also weed out the griefers to some extent. Making the server more enjoyable.

This would just create a new problem: lack of players. We need a lot of people for this experiment, more than 100, and if we even had a 1 cent entry fee, this would practically minimize the player base. Even if it would minimize griefers, I would rather have 150 players and 10 griefers than 5 players and no griefers. This would also quickly lead to accusations of "YOU DON'T WANT TO TEST POLITICS YOU JUST WANT MONEY" no matter how neccesary the money is to the server.
Or if we purchase the hardware, I can set it up so we can run like 5 or six different servers off it, and they pay for our services while we continue to work on this?
What if instead of charging an entrance fee, a mod is created for the server? To join the server, you would have to download the mod, providing at least some revenue to help run it, as well as supplying extra content to be used to help meet all the criteria for the simulation. It would be like an entrance fee, but not coming out of the player's pockets.
On that note where will players spawn at the very beginning of the experiment?
