The problem with mods like that is that advances come far to quickly to be reasonable. Within a week, we would have confederations of Diamond-Drill using spacemen. In addition, those mods are to far removed from Miecraft to give an accurate simulation for our purposes.
Well, actually, a lot of the ridiculous space-agey technology is in other mods like Industrialcraft, which was left out of consideration almost immediately because it becomes a contest of who can build the most solar panels. Here's a short list to give you an idea of what the ones I picked have in them:
Breeding mechanics for bees and trees.
Blast furnaces for making steel.
Steam locomotives.
Transport pipes, which could be used to make dedicated factories and transport liquids.
Various processors for advanced crafting recipes; the most advanced of which make vacuum tubes and logic gates.
(Expensive) Automatic farms and digging machines.
Oil refineries and ethanol production.
Lasers for making logic gates (note that these are not laser guns, their only purpose is making things).
Aside from perhaps the last few, it's more along the lines of Industrial Revolution era technology. Furthermore, there's not a whole lot added in the realm of player equipment; warfare would still be done with bows and swords. With these mods I think you'd start to see cities with factories spring up, and players would build railroads to connect the cities.
It was just a thought on my part. By all means, vanilla simulations will probably still be an important part of studying politics and economics in Minecraft. I just think that maybe a few simulations with technology a bit closer to modern day technology (but without going over the top with it) might yield some interesting results.

Minecraft is now filled with toxic children who are incapable of having complex conversations such as this one.
I have spent hours of my life looking for a community such as this one, where an actual government can take shape and flourish instead of the faction/anarchist mess most servers have. The problem now days is the mindset that cooperation is unnecessary. Most minecraft players are violent, untrustworthy, and spiteful when playing on multiplayer servers.
Yes, I know this is a bump. I can only hope I can drag this conversation back into the light to inspire another generation of minecrafters into something greater than what currently exists. The effort is probably wasted, but the gesture is what's important. There are too few people like us on this forum, in this game, and in the world in general. The Eternal September has come for minecraft, and I accept that. I realize I'm a relic of a bygone age, but I will hold on. Just as anybody, no matter when they started playing this game, should.
This is just terrible. You are taking away from what minecraft is made from, like other servers out there. If realism and politics is what you want, play Real Life.
I for one love this kind of game, but its an opinnion

If you guys are looking for something similar to what is described in the OP, come check out Devoted, it's a civilization experiment with plugins designed to allow cities to grow and pick their own style of government.

Socially exiled from Minecraft community due to prefering civilization to anarchy. Our time will rise once more!
