Minecraft is open ended, sometimes absurdly so. This is awesome. It also leads to some incredible scenarios that you don't find anywhere else.
Some of these things happened to me, others to my friends, and some to other people.
Scenario 1: Lies and Grudges
Imagine you're on a big PvP faction server. You've just got your act together: Iron tools, armour, a good base and all that. One day you come back into your house and you're ambushed by a small party. The threeof them kill you, then tear your base down. They take all your resources and you almost have to start over. Almost.
As it turns out, that faction was just one of a huge alliance. You gat recruited by a different faction, and slowly work your way up the hierarchy. Yoy get trusted, respected. Eventually, with days of work, you get elected as the leader of the whole alliance. What do you want? Revenge, ouf course.
It comes to a quiet night, and you strike. You take all the valuables. Twenty stacks of diamonds, ten stacks of ender pearls, and five stack of obsidian get stolen in the first minutes. Then you take everything else: Iron, gold, potions, blaze rods, enchanting tables. Even chests of cobble get burned. You murder anyone you see. In the aftermath, another alliance declares war. Buildings are torn down. Thousands of square miles change hands. Hundreds of people's lives are affected. And what was the cause? You.
Scenario 2: The Butterfly Effect
Imagine you're on that same server. You've got your act together, and you're looking around for an easy kill. You find an iron-armoured man being chased by a diamond-covered one. You sprint-hit the chaser, and, with some clever dodges and tactics, kill him. The iron-armored one thanks you, and is on his way.
As it turns out, that man was a messenger sent from an outpost of a large faction to its main stronghold. He was returning with news of where another faction, which the persuer came from, was based. The first group invades, and catches the others off guard. They massacre the other faction, tearing down buildings and robbing valuables. A hundred square miles of land changes hands. A hundred people were affected. Now,if we may imagine, what may have happened if you hadn't helped the messenger?
Scenario 3: Reckoning Force
You start out in a big PvP server. You've just got stone tools, and you stumble upon the base of a veteran player. Not believing your luck, you emty the chests and steal his enchanting table. You take a look through his portal and find his glowstone stash. You take it all. After ferrying it all back to your base, you quickly make diamond armor, tools and potions. You've just gotten an enourmous power boost. As a final thought, you booby trap his door to kill him. The next day, you see him die by the trap, take all his things and run back to your base. You put on his enchanted diamond armour and take his sword. You're much more powerful now.
You take a look about for a while, and find that a lot of traffic goes through a valley near spawn. The valley is well-traveled becuase it has a well-built road that splits off in many directions. The road hasn't been destroyed because every person crossing wants to use it again. Now these intersections are frequented also because of the enourmous pools of lava stopping all but the most determined attempt at mining underneath and in the mountains to the side. It is a perfect place to strike.
You gear up and position yourself on a mountaintop nearby. A group of four leather-wearers walk in, and you throw an ender pearl down. When you arrive, you hit them with poison and weakness potions, then hack away with your sword. You kill them all, and the next one to come through. You go back up to the mountain, and next strike by throwing a pearl straight up then another one at three diamond-geared players. You get them with instant damage, and three strikes with a sword finishes the group off. You find among their inventories several more potions, and take them to help sustain your position. You continue killing everyone who comes through, with arrows, swords, and potions. No-one gets through.
On the server's forums, threads pop up about your presence. People discuss how to get past you, and you change you ways to stop them. No large groups can get onto or off of the spawn continent, otherwise ringed by cliffs, because you block the only other way in or out. People mount coordinated attacks against you, but you hold the position. You are a force to be reckoned with.
So, what do they sound like? Only the second has happened to me, but I have verified stories of the others occuring. If you have suggestions, feel free to comment.
I've been in the centre of no. 1, but it wasn't about revenge, just knowing if and when the clan would attack us and making sure they do not succeed in doing so. I nearly got leader but nooo they had to declare a war to "extinction" on us because they "just don't like them (us)" so I had to throw away all my ****ing work on the town and screw over all the people I played and chatted with for seven months because they thought it would be funny to grief and destroy another clan. This pretty much balanced against the benefit of their OP mcmmo skills.
