I'm trying to start a discussion about the specific reasons why people play on SMP servers.
The reason I am starting this thread is that I see dozens of large and active Iconomy/Faction/free-build/anti-grief servers, but I cannot find a PVP server that lasts longer than a couple of weeks and that has a large player-base. I want to know why people play on some types of servers and why PVP/anarchy servers fail. At some point I want to set up a PVP server and I want to know how to make it last.
The main source of my confusion comes from the fact that SMP offers the opportunity to compete with other people (like in PVP), but instead people seem to go on SMP to create structures that are vulnerable to griefing and server map restarts (whereas playing in single player makes your creations immune to griefing and server map restarts).
So I pose the question to the community, why do you play online with other people? The poll is at the top. If you chose other, please explain why you play on SMP. If you want to add a poll category, please tell me. If you want to comment on your answer choices, please do. I look forward to seeing all of your responses.

Well, I am from the Survival Single Players, I think that I play that way because i am more protected for creepersgriefers.
People play online because is boring to play alone all the time, or because they are in their servers with friends (I also like playing that way but i don't have any minecrafter friend ).
To have people to talk to, build with, adventure with. I guess to answer your question on why people build amazing structures in multiplayer is, Why have something thats looks amazing but, no one can see it? The reason so many PvP servers are failing atm is probably because of the Hunger Games. I actually prefer non-PvP
The main reason I think is to have people to talk to while you play. It's also nice to be able to see what people have built, to gain inspiration or what have you. Interaction with other people makes SMP a lot better that SSP!
In my own personal opinion, I prefer playing in SMP because I don't see a point in playing/building in SP because at the end of the day, you built a lot of stuff that only you can enjoy/mess about in. (unless you upload pictures/video, or the map itself.. but just seems like a lot of hassle) I prefer SMP because it just gives me that satisfaction of building awesome buildings and showing them off to my friends
The whole reason I started my server was because I wanted a new experience in Minecraft. I got bored with SP, and wanted to adventure/build/survive with other, real people. Therefore, my father, my fiance, and myself all three founded a server together and the main focus was to make friends and play minecraft together. So I voted for "To survive in the wilderness together" Fun stuff SMP is!
