Personally I can't say i dislike the existence of Extreme Hills biome, mainly because it's the only mountanious region we have right now but, as you say, I would rather see this biome gone and have random height variation across most biomes except for the plains biomes. This is because plains are supposed to be like that and having mountains across them would mess with the villages generation.
I think this is one of the reasons why the Extreme Hills biome exists. However, if they put in random height variation and in an area where flatness occurs, there could be a chance that a village spawns there. Do you like that idea?

I don't know if I understood what you were trying to say (english is not my first language). If you say that there should be a chance that they generate in a relatively flat area in any biome, then I agree, but the area should be big enough so that they don't end up buried in the side of a mountain or hanging in a ravine. What I was trying to say is that height variation should be in every biome but plains. Plains should stay the way they are to allow the generation of said villages.

I understand you completely. In this case they probably have to make the rate of flatter land higher than the rate of mountainous land, which makes sense anyway. Who wants mountains spammed in our faces? The terrain will be just as random an unexpected. In one of the mods I have, where 1.7 terrain is combined with the current one, I found a village in a somewhat hilly desert and the village was spawned fine. It had a few bugs here and there such as the gravel path being raised 1 block for some reason, but overall it was spawned fine compared to a lot of other villages. Hopefully we can get some high plateaus so we can find a village spawned on a mountain.
I think plains should be flat too but I think having a mountain in a plain would be cool. They could just set the frequency of mountains or height variation frequency really low. Since plains are intended to have the characteristic of being flat, the chance of finding really weird terrain in them would be small, but very possible.

Thanks for the compliment ;). In fact, your idea is really cool, it would be great if there could be a mountain in a plain. that way plains doesn' t look so bland and identical to each other. That combined with a better height detection for villages spawning and a random height variation on the other biomes could make for a breathtaking landscape mixing the old landscape with the new features and biomes.
Note that taiga and ice plains are two separate biome types and to compare them is unfair.
Other than that point, I agree. I miss the big, blocky overhangs that once dominated the landscape. It was fun making a home on top of a huge cliff or at the top of a valley, but now there's only flat fields and the rare steep mountain cliff.
I whole-heartedly agree with this thread. And I started playing in Beta 1.8, so I missed out on all the awesome. I loved the sorts of terrain Kurtjmac came across in his Far Lands or Bust series, which was probably one of the biggest things that convinced me to get the game. And then I got something nowhere near as interesting, with depressingly endless oceans and flat terrain. I like to be an adventurer, and yet, I find that aspect is ironically lacking in the "adventure update".
It didn't take me long to get used to all the biomes. As many have said, once you've seen one <insert biome here>, you've seen them all. The only thing in the current terrain which I still find intriguing is those occasions where a jungle will form a lagoon and lovely beach, or rivers cutting through jungle hills (which is the closest thing we've got to mountains with trees now). Everything else is bland and predictable, with only generated structures like villages and dungeons to break the monotony.
ironically enough; when the "adventure update" came out, making exploring more "exciting" and more things different to discover, it seems the very update is when they made the maps boring.
I honestly forgot about seeds when 1.8 was implemented. Now every biome looks like a variant of the forest biome (which you always spawn in now) No beaches, biomes are too big. Too bland. Too boring. Every time I try to make a new world, I always think: "maybe this time will be different, maybe I'll get a real, beautiful world like the old days." But I always, ALWAYS find the soul-shattering feeling of seeing nothing but flat, dense, dull forest, as far as the eye can see.
Ps: ignore my creepy profile pic, it keeps changing itself into the girl from the exorcist. If i could help it, my pic would be painis cupcake or me gusta.

Are youbored of minecraft? It's not the new features. I'll give you a hint:It's the terrain generation. Go play a map generated in 1.7.3 or earlier, then tell me you don't agree.

It's currently painis cupcake for me. Hit Ctrl+F5 and see if that fixes it for you? It may be a caching issue.
I generated some worlds today, and found a smallish mountain in the forest called "ForestHills" with trees on! Is this old or new? I have never seen this before. If new, perhaps Jeb are aware of how disappointed a lot of us are with the blue gloomy bare ExtremeHills? Sure, the forest was littered with trees, but still, it did look rather nice! I just felt like building a home there. Been long since I found such a nice place in Minecraft. Almost Beta 1.7.3 vibes.
Seed: ultra hardmode x:800 z:-250
And some distance away another nice view of a steep shoreline with beach and green hills with FLOB-texture pack. Also, a nice cave to the left.
Still, something needs to be done. I see people going crazy of the wonderful terrain created by the xbox generator, since it is still pre Beta 1.8. Imagine all those 1 million xbox users when their version finally hit Beta 1.8 and the world gen is ruined. Now, the only decent biome is Forest, but it is so crammed with trees that you can't breath. ExtremeHills, Svamps, Taigas and all those biomes just are terrible. So the only possibility is finding a nice forest and chop down trees for days until you have breathing room. Any news of how long until Beta 1.8 is implemented on the xbox? If they update slowly perhaps it is worth getting an xbox.
I have a theory about the current generator. Except for the extreme hills biome, land tends to rise when nearby a water source. Still not as good as our forest mountains back then, but it's a slow start. I'm still pissed real mountains are limited to one biome. As for the "-hills" prefix, I think those sub-biomes were intentionally added. They're still nothing compared to the previous generator.
Oh, and you call THAT a beach? Looks like someone used SinglePlayerCommands and replaced the dirt with sand. You can't even build on that!
I guess some things can change, but I don't really see any effects the terrain will bring to change the game.I mean most parts of the world aren't flat if you really explore it.Most parts are I agree with that but I don't get how it will change anything.

You just contradicted yourself.
Terrain differentiation motivates exploration and the will to build. Two of which are major gameplay factors in Minecraft.
wasn't the adventure update supposed to motivate exploration and discover differant things per biome... ive gotta find where they said that and post it hereGet a load of this, its an image taken of the rivergen for 1.8, (meaning this is what 1.8 worldgen started as) it has both rivers, and giant mushrooms but also has a good forested hills.
I edidted a few variables in the code and changed 1 classfile and look what i did to the 1.2.5 worldgen
A jungle
Plains
Desert
Swamp
Download
This is the edited classfile, but an error occurs on worldgen(i dont know what exactly) but it does work, try instlaling differant ways, i noticed it worked when i put the file in with other mods
Take lots of pics and also forests are Great!
And if you thought extreme hills was extreme before...see them now
I made my first world in beta 1.6 and I remember finding mountians that went allmost up to the sky, and EPIC GIANT caves, now all the mountians are tiny, all my maps look the same, and ocean bioms? no, just no.
so I want the old generator back ( I forgot ir 1.6 and 1.7 used the same generator though )
I made a thread about the terrain on the Yogscast Forums and I got a terribly high amount of dislikes >.<
There it is:
Minecraft is losing popularity through it and minecraft became really boring! The developers still didn't do anything about it! We're screaming at them to bring it back. But they still didnt do anything about it.
Minecraft used to be so beautiful, abundant and lovely. It gives me nostalgia shivers when I hear the "cat" from C418. It was always something new when you create a new world! I made hundreds of worlds, just to see the beauty of the old minecraft. But then minecraft 1.8 came and notch and jeb ruined our dreams. The world generation is ugly and repeats itself all the time. When you make a new world, it's always the same thing. exploring isn't beauitful at all and everything is bland and boring!
They listened to the community a bit and re-implemented the beaches. But it's not enough! We're shouting jeb in the ear, but he doesn't wanna bring us the good things back! I always hated the current terrain and I will never change my opinion on that! I just wanna have the good old terrain generator back. At least with larger biomes!
Please jeb, please listen to the community and give us the old world-gem back.
EDIT: to defend my reputation, I wanted to give some additional notes to this: this thread was poorly written and didn't quite match my actual opinion on this: I don't dislike the world generator, but the terrain generation with the separated biomes and the boringness of the terrain. I like the abandoned mineshafts and ravines would be better if they were more rare. I would just like a different biome geberaton. so before my bar becomes red again, please note this edit.
Yea, you're so true with that. The Adventure Update ruined the awesomeness of Minecraft and its beauty! How should it make more fun to explore when everything looks the same xD
To be honest its not your fault, the fanbase of the yogscast most likely got minecraft because of them so they just rather like minecraft and be fan boys than exept the trueth, just to keep the yogscast alive

They can look similar to what we had back before 1.8, just less flat a little bigger:
Still not the best, but it's the closest we'll get to pre-1.8 beaches.
This could theoretically affect the ForestHills, desertHills, and TaigeHills biomes. But I haven't tested it yet.
EDIT:
Heres a VERY big beach I found. No, it's not a desert...
I suppose they could call it "Classic" or "Legacy"
