This is the first thing I thought as well! It's true. I really like the space.
Perhaps there should be some slider bars to direct terrain generation?
Flatter<--------------->Mountains
Barren <--------------->Forests
water coverage
0%<--------------->100%
etc?
This could help, but the code still creates a giant patchwork quilt of repetetive biomes... I can't fully get into Survival anymore since there's nothing interesting to explore. Still prefer going back and checking out my old maps...

One issue I see with slider bars, is that giving out a seed would be much more complicated, since altering terrain generation settings would almost certainly affect the generation of ores, villages, etc.
I like how the OP uploads pictures of mountainsides for the then, but then a picture of a swamp tree up close for the now, what kind of reference comparison is this supposed to be, this thread is obviously overly biased to the ideal that the terrain is garbage, my honest opinion,
everyone has been playing in the same world for so long they are becoming bored of "random" terrain and have started to "know" or "perceive" what is around the next mountain, or what to expect in a grass plains.
I agree mountain generation has been nerfed, and would love to see the snow Biomes elevate, but to be honest, creating a seed generating world is much harder than half of the people in this topic would even want to START to delve into.
this may be a "finished" game but there is much to be added and to be expected, and here you all are jumping the gun.

Villagers need to turn into zombies once killed by a zombie... March 24th 2012
everyone has been playing in the same world for so long they are becoming bored of "random" terrain and have started to "know" or "perceive" what is around the next mountain, or what to expect in a grass plains.
People were pointing out the dramatic change in terrain generation right after 1.8 came out. They didn't "get used" to anything. Most of the people who are complaining can look at the old terrain generation and the new terrain generation and tell which is better.
I agree mountain generation has been nerfed, and would love to see the snow Biomes elevate, but to be honest, creating a seed generating world is much harder than half of the people in this topic would even want to START to delve into.
People are not claiming to "know" how the terrain generation works. People are comparing how it was, and how it is now, and stating that what we had before was better in a number of ways.
this may be a "finished" game but there is much to be added and to be expected, and here you all are jumping the gun.
Explain how we are "jumping the gun" in comparing the current generation with how it previously was implemented? Should we wait until 1.0.1 or 1.1 comes out, and has the same terrain before starting this conversation?
A lot of intelligent responses here... however you must understand that we are seemingly pointing out there is no reason for seeds anymore because every world looks the same. We're not complaining about the size of biomes. What set one world from another were the complexities. Now that the generator has made everything so much simpler and repetitive, a lot of interest has been lost to explore. The weird thing is that one of Notch's goals for the adventure update was to encourage people to explore.

No, we're not bored of random terrain. That's one of the things we'd like to have back. We're bored of the expected terrain. Your argument is invalid.

if it was random how did you know what to expect?
ofc you guys will not understand my point of view but it comes down to this, I have seen little in change of the environment around me that would cause me to raise concern about the generation of terrain, I find mountains in all of my biomes, none of the hulking masses I used to, but I actually found that VERY aggravating when exploring, digging, building to have GIANT landmass sized walls in my way. not to mention the countless UGLY floating chunks commonly found in those mountainous regions.
I do not like the biomes either. Former Minecraft 1.7.3 and lower have had better biomes Notch why would you do this!There are know beaches which was my favourite thing in the game. The swamps look ugly they dont blend in to other biomes.
BETTER MOUNTAINS BEFORE!!! Please Notch and jeb_ (and new guy) after you fix the NPC villages make biomes more better and smoother and for god sakes fix those mountains.
Not that I want to stamp what I said earlier. But i generated a world, no seed or anything. Spawned next to these.
Terrain = not boring.
-picture snip-
What you have there is a very foggy picture of bland mountain biome with very very few to no trees on a terrible angle. You should travel around the world a bit. We understand there are mountain biomes but that seems to be the only somewhat cool things in the world. Besides, mountains only appear in their own biomes now, which is sad because they used to be in every biome giving you a lot of variations.

Yeah, that is awesome. But the point is that every seed is like that. That's how its boring and that's the point of this whole thread. Every biome looks exactly the same.
Are you saying that it's boring? It's only got a max of about 5 trees in the biome. Some variation is needed but it's not exactly boring. I think if anything it's better that the biomes are separated properly. Although it did get to a point where those mountains ended and a swamp with about 60 million trees appeared :tongue.gif:.
Yes.... it is better if biomes are separated properly. Biome-to-biome transitions are one of the things that needs to be improved, but that's not the point of this argument.
Yes, the terrain has become very boring. There's no point in seeds anymore.
I don't see the problem being the flatness of the land, but I see the problem is that there's no randomization. Biomes are layed out like squares in a grid now, there's no random epic things, and it sucks ass.
Notch probably added the new terrain gen because of chunk errors, the large flat walls and flat sided cubes of land, but I called them plateaus.
I miss seeing desert mountains. Those were pretty awesome especially where one had a giant circular room at ground level and a sandy cave opening on the one side. It was spectacular in that alpha/beta time. Now deserts are way too wet with water almost everywhere as well as wet rivers running through them.
Large flat areas are nice but I'd like to see more mountains spread out over things. Especially in desert areas. There has to be a healthy mix really.
Finally people are agreeing with me when I said that 1.8 made horrible changes to the terrain. I said that they would soon tire of the featureless landscape. I mean caves aren't even worth exploring anymore. It's just all the same thing with a ravine here and there. It's not random anymore. It's just predictable, and uninteresting.
I really hope this world Type option fixes it. I mean I would give up all the new structures and the End just to get the old mixed biome code back. They could even have larger biomes with mixed borders. They just conformalized the terrain way too much and everything became lackluster.
Actually I want the biomes to be realistic in size. Instead of having clear borders to everything, they needs to separate terrain generations from biome code. Biome code shouldn't have clear cut limitations. We should have the possibility that the terrain wants to spawn a mountain and the desert biome cuts it out. This is what created the spectacular waterfalls that i miss so much. Now every waterfall i see is ruined, because it hits this plateauish thing at the bottom and awkwardly spreads out. It's NOT the same.

And seriously, what happened to the snowy pine forests? Those were beautiful!

Sucks cause now I just spawn a world, see a pine forest or swamp, and my eyes glaze over.
