Just want to remind everyone that this isn't a nostalgia thread. For those who fully want the alpha/beta terrain back, then this isn't the right thread for you. In a sense, this is about incorporating the level of variety the 1.7.3 generator had with the new features/terrain of the current generator. However, I'm not speaking about those who post pictures of the previous generator, as they emphasize how much was lost when 1.8 arrived.
I'm very skeptical about this idea. It's been mentioned a lot though. I feel as if the complete simplicity of the randomness minecraft has (or had...) is an important aspect to the game. With all these sliders, seeds can potentially be rendered useless. However, no one has mentioned a "randomness slider" before. But how can they program randomness if you're forcefully determining X?
It might just be me, but if for say my world is made to have a lot of oceans, I may be sick of oceans and the other defaults I've made, but I don't want to start another world and leave all my creations behind. This is where 1.7.3's level of variety came in to play. Yes, you could definitely see a certain thing more than once, but you can also explore to other places as well and the natural generation will seem completely new to you.
I'm just not sure how these "sliders" could work efficiently. Again, the paragraph above might just be me, and I also might be afraid of change and not realizing it, but I need some more explanation.

They aren't going to downgrade. All they have to do is increase the randomization for height variation, tree frequency, biome size, etc for most if not all biomes. This is what I mean by being up to par with 1.7.3's level of variety.
We're sorta just saying the same thing, but in a literal sense they can't go back to the 1.7.3 generator.

You can do that by getting a mod/mcNostalgia. Again, this discussion is NOT about bringing back a previous generator, not even 1.7's, even though it may feel like the best decision. We're trying to increase the level of variety in the generator so that every world isn't a repetitive wasteland of boringness that they are now.
I liked 1.7.3's generator. But I also like the new features as well. I got a mod that mixes them. However, I'd like an official update(s) so I don't have to wait for the mod to be updated, or changes of the mod I don't like. And many others want Mojang to do something about the terrain as well. They aren't going to downgrade the game to previous versions (and I don't know how you think they'll go all the way back to Alpha), so we have to encourage them to go forward on progress and clean up.
I've come to realization that not only does Jeb doesn't seem to notice this problem, but other players don't as well. A LOT of players have started playing Minecraft since the adventure update hit our clients. Yes, from a newbie perspective I can see the worlds being fun to roam around on. The freshness of Minecraft (or any other game in general) is what fuels the replay value. The early release of Minecraft is not helping either. Beta 1.8 only lasted for a short time, while 1.9 was even shorter. Beta 1.7.3, when Minecraft's terrain generator actually had variety, was the last chance people had to witness the beauty of unique seeds. So my guess is, only indev players, infdev players, Alphadogs, and <1.8 Beta testers realize this is a very important issue.
Did any of the supporters of this issue purchase Minecraft during or after 1.8? I think it'd be interesting to know.
I fully believe that this new terrrain generation is sadeningly bland.
Now I'm not some imbecile asking for trees made of diamonds. I'm asking for varieation in the landscape. Clearings in forests, small patches of trees within plains. large caverns with vast underground chambers rather than mole-tunnels everywhere (think ravines)
And of course: mountains as a TERRAIN FEATURE that can spawn in different biomes rather than A BIOME IN IT'S OWN REGARD.

Starting in a forest with no items or anything nearby, doesn't make much sense. The beach also represented safety, hostile mobs don't spawn in the ocean. It was a good idea.
I'm a Release 1.0 player, but I still think that the World Generation is really boring.

Also, with each release of Minecraft being so close to one another, it's hard to find really cool places, because "someone" decided to rework the generation code at every update.
Like, does it really make sense that you wake up in a forest (unless you're Hansel and Gretel)? Or when you spawn in the middle of an open area? When were those days that you spawned on an island in the middle of nowhere, a "Survival Island" type experience? Or those days where you started right at the opening of a mine, leading to who knows where?
At least with the release of Snapshot 12w16a, it makes some sense. With the "Bonus Chest", if you spawn on the side of a beach, you could be one of those survivors of a shipwreck, with only some parts of the ship to help you. However, it could work against it also. Why the hell would there be a random chest in the middle of a forest?
Like, is Mojang really concerned with players spawning on an island in the middle of nowhere? There's always at least one tree, or something like that. Who cares if we spawn somewhere cool, yet slightly hard to work with. But no, we have to start in boring places just for the sake of making things easier.
Anyways, I really think there needs to be better world generation in Minecraft.
I would like to go on record by saying that I hate the mushroom biomes, I HATE that every time I make a new map there's a god-damn jungle, I hate the god-awful oceans, plains and deserts suck, mountains have no variety, AND THE DAMN SWAMPS ARE STILL IN THE GAME.
This is coming from a person who started in 1.8. The old world-gen looks epic.
As for ravines and and mineshafts and what-not,
1. Ravines are fine, just want more variety.
2. Rivers are fine.
3. I want fewer caves. Just way too many.
4. I don't like my mine intersecting 3 mineshafts before bedrock level.

Consider that rather than the terrain being boring, we're just less easily satisfied. After so long of playing minecraft, you've simply seen it all. I'm pretty sure that if I'd be new to Minecraft now, I'd be happy and satisfied with how the lands look.
I also consider these lands and sizes of biomes more realistic and certainly much better when it comes to survival. For example, remember those days when you wanted to melt a freakin desert full of sand into glass? You'd finally find that desert, but it's too small for what you have in mind.

Isn't it rather weird that so damn many people would get bored EXACTLY at 1.8? I'm also an Alphadog (I'm insulted!) and have never been bored before. Your argument is invalid.

Not the case at all. During late 1.7.3, I took a break from Minecraft. I finally started playing again after the release. After not playing for months you'd think I'd be energetic to play again. This was the case, but only for a couple days. In my previous 1.0 world I realized something was missing. For example, the "epic" mountain near my spawn was a wonderful site. But after getting on top of the mountain and looking around, I realized there were no trees, and mountains were common in every world. In a 1.8 world I was spawned on a small island in the middle of the blank ocean. After sailing straight for 5 minutes I hit land, but it was just a flat forest connected to an army of bare mountains. After flying in creative world for a good 10 minutes I realized every aspect of the terrain was repeated, and nothing was unexpected.
Small cave? It's going to open up into a swiss cheese complex surrounded by ravines and abandoned mineshafts.
Forests? Flat. Trees. Occasional hill. Whatever.
Desert? Flat. Sand. Bisected by a river. Whatever.
Extreme hills? Epic mountains? Nope. Bare mountains. Army of piles of grass and stone and nothing more.
So then I looked at the forums and saw some people were hinting at this terrain problem. So I made this thread combining a lot of arguments made by other MCF users.
And before you know it, a bunch of people are agreeing with the argument. So it's not just "my boredom."
And another thing: From page 1 of this thread to about page 54(?), I haven't been playing Minecraft because I knew there would be no surprises. I knew what would come. There was no point in looking for cool seeds because they were all the same. Recently I found a simple mod combining aspects of the 1.7.3 generator with the features and biomes of the new generator. I've been playing as much as I did when Beta 1.7 arrived. HUGE change.
Also, biome size is not the problem, it's the variety of combined features in each biome. The mod I have contains the same biome size for every biome. I don't mind trekking landscapes to find new ones, because that's just another motivator of exploration. And you know what else is? Variety of the terrain; something the current vanilla generator doesn't have anymore.
