Something more on topic, I found this beach recently. http://imgur.com/wFCamcI Reminds me of a 1.7.3 beach with the way the sand continues into the land. Interesting that this can happen again, though it is very rare in my experience.

So they seemed to have reduced the infini-caves in the 1.7 snapshots. So, that's one problem solved. They've also fixed height variation, so that's problem number two solved. Gravel beaches are back, and beaches in general have been touched up. Final problem solved.
Those were the primary issues with the terrain, correct? The OP lists these as the issues with pre-1.7 terrain:

There have definitely been improvements to all of these aspects of the terrain, however I would not call them fixed. Height variation is still limited, beaches are still sloppy in most places, and gravel beaches are more just occasional patches of gravel along the water. There are also the smaller issues discussed on this thread such as biome transitions and density of foliage. Recent snapshots are definitely a good start to improving the terrain, but there is still much to be done in my opinion.
What they're already done to the beaches is a step in the right direction though. I'd be lying if i said I didn't like the new terrain generation already.
The original post hasn't been edited in ages since the OP disappeared from the face of the Earth. There are a few issues still.
No cross-biome mountains(not solved due to variation being technical biomes)
Lack of proper transitions
Lack of tree variety.
Ah okay. Tree variety is something that is being worked on, it seems. Proper transitions are definitely being worked on in the snapshots, as well. Dinnerbone has said that 1.7 is nowhere near finished, so we can expect to see more issues addressed.

I imagine this will be a defining update to the terrain. I doubt they intend to revisit the terrain again after this update, at least not for quite some period of time. So, I imagine they will do their best while they're working on it.

Hopefully yes, there's a lot they could do with the new features to make terrain more interesting than ever before.

I'll keep my hope for now. One thing I want is for the mountains to be generated by perlin noise rather than technical biomes. This is what helped allow biome-crossing mountains.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

Nah, I'm still alive. I only get ticked off when people blatantly try to degrade grammar.
i can agree that it has become boring with the same seed over and over, but at least we can enjoy the new gameplay in 1.7 wich will soon come out. the terrain there is so random, and it is extremely fun to explore
1.7 is really improving the terrain and I have to say that the height variation problem is solved. I saw flat forests, hilly ones or I came across something like that. (same with other biomes)
Even though one of our complaints is out of the way now there are still plenty left, like the sloppy beaches or the grass color transitions
I really hope Jeb is going to fix this.
sorry but this grass color is far to be cool you play in beta 1.7.3 look the grass colors wait i will bring a image //i.imgur.com/8X6rZlL.png" width="" height="" alt="" />" width="" height="" alt="" />

Wow, that's really impressive. My only remaining gripes about the terrain are the lack of decent beaches and river biome colors (I wish the grass/water color would just adapt to the surrounding biomes rather than always looking like grass from a plains biome)
@icywolf If you love the beta terrain so much, download the Better World Generation 4 mod and find a server that plays with it. Mojang will never simply revert the terrain to be like it used to. (Note: I didn't mean to give you a rep point... I meant to rep the person you were quoting... derp...)

yes but i feeling alone the only people that play in beta if the problem is biome size (beta have small biomes) the notch can expand the biomes imagine the glacier seed floating island 2 times bigger nice then they can expand the biomes right
and too thx 4 rep point

LIMITED HEIGHT VARIATION
FORCED ENDLESS CAVES
SLOPPY SAND BEACHES & ABSENCE OF GRAVEL BEACHES
...but that's just like, my opinion, man.

It would be better if the biome was made out of red rock. Not clay.Kinda corny...
