Well... I knew this thread would become a massive flame war, but let's make some points
• Minecraft IS, at the moment, a sandbox, slowly getting rpg elements. But it is a ****ing sandbox.
• We all have to agree 70% of this discussion is completely pointless.
• My point is instead of the RPG elements Mojang could make just plain, new content, not ****ing giant dragons in space
Exactly. A sandbox game does not have an "end"-anything. Not Endermen, not Ender Dragons, and certainly not places called "the End". They also don't have a single super-boss monster.
That's actually true and reminds me of something that was said about the Simcity series. They're not games; they're toys. Grand Theft Auto is a toy. Minecraft used to be a toy. It's turning into a game.
Well... GTA has an end. Yet you call it a toy or a sandbox. So by your contradiction Minecraft is still a sandbox game.

That means that if he suddenly makes this a racing game, it's OK because it's his game?
Oh well. Apparently, it did become a flame war.
Don't worry, I didn't expect you to be able to answer MY POST IN THE FIRST PAGE, because you obviously made this topic for no reason and you had no clue about what you were talking about.
That's precisely why I asked that question, to expose you as a noob who has too much free time to complain, and you simply can't make any useful thread.
My advice: Don't make more threads until you actually know what you're talking about.
Minecraft is very vague and doesn't fit into anyone one genre. However I'd argue that minecraft is a sandbox game, a very pure sandbox game because there is no limiting fiction, or story. With GTA your ability to interact and play with the environment is limited to the story/fiction. In GTA I can't access one part of the world if I haven't unlocked it yet, limiting my ability to interact with said sandbox. However in Minecraft I can interact with anything I want because there really isn't anything limiting me from doing so. I'm not constrained to 1930's automobiles, or the laws of gravity. The game can look, play, or be anything you want it to be. In a game like GTA your ability to control the game is limited by what the developer wants.
technicaly not one person on this forum or anyone else that bought the game for that matter owns the game. We all just bought "rights" to play the game, thats how it works with all copyrighted games as well not to mention other licensed programs. And to awnser op's post. yes... yes it does.
This is a joke, right? Sarcasm? Since, you know, that's exactly what happened to Minecraft?
I'm not complaining, as I'm not one of the people that are adamantly against the new features being added. But Minecraft is certainly not a "sandbox" game anymore.
Maybe you 'can't see the forest for the trees' or something, but
Mincraft is still an extreme example of a Sandbox game, and that's
not even up for debate.
It has elements of other genres, but it's still all centered around
a massive world that you can pretty freely form in your own image.

I'm still capable of mostly playing Minecraft like it was 2010. The only difference is I have to eat now every once in a while to avoid losing HP. But other than that, I'm playing the game exactly the same way I did when I first bought minecraft.
There's not enough major changes in the game to warrant a genre switch, really. It's still pretty much a sandbox game, in my eyes.
And by the way, in my some of my other posts I explained why in no way did he ever switch genres lol. If you knew anything about game development you would realize your a ****ing idiot! Alpha featured what? Survival. You are acting as though you are a lone survivor using the resources at hand to thrive. Acting out a role is RPG woooo! Mainly featuring the block mechanics and total world interaction Minecraft left Alpha and entered Beta. Now did Notch ever remove any of the core features that were displayed at the last release of Alpha before it went into beta? No.
Now stop bitching it's not a god damn ****ing sandbox it's an RPG. Get over it.
And if you feel "cheated" that in your eyes he did change the genre. Take Notch to court please and I shall laugh as you get embarrassed.

Well, I think GTA is quite sandboxy. I mean i can go round killing everyone, go on while police chases. I'm not sure about the "locked" areas. Last time i played, you enter one of the areas you get chased down by cops.
Since it was intended to be a community-run creative game to begin with, I think notch is just making the base vanilla form of the game and thinks that the community will mod the game to what they want. He's only putting things that he thinks would fit across all genres of mods.
I think gold is useful when enchantments are in the mix.
Anyway, it's not like notch decided to completely troll and add, say, a card game component. The thing about sand
box games is that they're never really just "sandbox" games, they also have a crap load of other game elements in it.
.. we need a trading card mini-game in minecraft now.

I'm not fully sure about that bit, honestly. It definitely has merit but modding was never expected to become this big, nor was it ever intended to get full support (client side, that is -- Notch has always wanted to add a server-side API for modding). Perhaps this was their goal once it became apparent that modding was going to be nigh-unstoppable and very popular, but I still doubt it.
...hey, I'm not a fan of dragons or potions either, and minecraft is still a sandbox game, you don't have to make potions, and dragons are passive unless you attack them. MC was an RPG from the start.
Bottom line is, it's his game, he just updates it in favor of his users.
That being said, it's almost impossible to make an update that 100% of the user base is going to like... duh. :happy.gif:

Ontopic, yes.
It's Notch's game.

Anyway, Minecraft would not be bad as a racing game.
