Was minecraft?
I'm not even sure your typical gaming company is capable of making something like minecraft properly. Its a very indie game, from concept to execution, and that is what has made it great. The gaming industry is locked into a certain type of game. They keep producing that type of game over and over. Getting them to make something like minecraft, and do it properly, would be an impressive feat. Minecraft defies some of the base principles they are used to working with.
No, the Legend of Zelda series are adventure games.
"Sandbox" refers to open-world games where you can do anything you want. A real-life sandbox is a box of sand, but you can make it into whatever you want. That's where the "Sandbox" style games got their name.
Words have meanings and you can't just use them however you please or the entire system of language breaks down.
The legend of zelda was an open ended world that didn't set you on a linear path. It gave you a sword and set you free without any further instruction.

It's an open world game, like minecraft
Did you ever play any of the Zelda games? The path is extremely linear (collect items, go to first temple, get equipment, go to next temple, get bigger sword, go to next temple) and from the very start there are characters who just sit there are repeat the same lines about how Hyrule is in so much trouble and they need a legendary hero to save it.
There is absolutely nothing open-ended about it. There are not even multiple endings. Just because some of the later games included mini-games to play doesn't suddenly make it a sandbox game.
It's an adventure game with a linear storyline where either you win or you lose. There are no choices to make, none of your decisions on how to play affect the story or its outcome.
Seriously, you can't just use words however you please.

THE legend of zelda.
Not the series.
It's a free, open world and are not restricted to what order you do the dungeons
What's wrong with the updates? I don't see why people people are hating on the new stuff. It still feels like the same game to me. o.o
Also,
I don't see how this is not a sandbox game anymore. When I think of sandbox games I think of an open world where you can do whatever you want. It doesn't matter if there's a goal or not. I end up making my own goals when I play this game.
eg. Build a giant castle
Survive till I have a chest full of diamonds.
P.S.
What's this "goal" everyone is talking about that came out in 1.9?
I suppose parts of the game still are. For example, Creative mode is sandbox. Survival mode on peaceful is basically sandbox. Anything else is not though.
Sandbox means there's no goal, and that there's nothing you HAVE to do. That's no longer true. For example, just the hunger system alone forces you to have to actively do certain things.
Again, not complaining, as I don't mind the additions. Just saying that it's not really the same genre it was before.
Grand Theft Auto and Carmagedon were both sandbox games but had goals...

GTA (from III on up), its numerous clones, Yakuza, Shenmue, etc. are all widely considered sandbox games. They still contain stories, development, upgrades and an ending. A common argument about Minecraft's changes are that any complications or structure suddenly prevent it from being a sandbox, and that's simply not true.

Yes they are.
I never meant to imply that Minecraft is not a sandbox game.
I'm simply enraged by all these people who suddenly thing LoZ is a sandbox game (probably because they read it somewhere on the internet rather than playing the game themselves and forming their own opinion on what genre it falls into). I honestly never expected to run into that on this forum so I was rather shocked.

Add Cities in Motion to that list too, there is a mode to play it with the only GOAL to earn money or go backrupt. It's very much sandbox, and you have less freedom than minecraft.
Let me add Terraria to that list too. That game has 3 bosses. You kill those bosses and you've basically beaten the game. You can keep playing of course after. Guess what everyone? SANDBOX GAME!
I really hate to say it, but this pretty much comes down to "haters gonna hate". Notch could add a full blown well written story to minecraft, RPG like skills and talents and whatever that makes RPG and RPG, add a boss fight, but keep everything as it is and it will still be the same level of sandboxism as it was before.
He's not making the game for others. He's doing what a designer should; Making the game he thinks needs to be made. It's what a lot of designers hold as the golden mantra. If you make the game you would love the most, you'll find other people that will love it just as much. You run the risk of creating a niche market, but at least you're guaranteed to end up with a good game.
Notch struck gold. Not only is he ending up with a fantastic game, but it's also one of the best selling indie titles of all history. He'd have to be a complete idiot to change his development process at this point.
He USED to do that. Now he's running polls on what people want :l he's basically guessing what other people want.

You're getting "open world" confused with the "overworld map" function of the first game.

Sandbox games don't have to have multiple endings.
You're wrong about all of those words except for "It's a" and "game".
Just because you could complete dungeons in any order doesn't make the story non-linear.
Just because you used an overworld map to travel doesn't mean it's open world.
You are on an adventure with a single path to completion in an environment with boundaries.
Minecraft uses boundaries. It has a limit to how high blocks can go and prevents you from digging too deep with bedrock.
Grand theft auto uses boundaries.Obvious walls even if the environment continues
WTF is the different between LOZ's map and open world? It's just perspective and limits of technology
Edit: Non-linear doesn't mean there is no end, it just means nothing forces you into a single path into that end
Minecraft lacks any sort of structure pointing you to completing a story.
GTA has a story, but you can just run around doing anything you want anyway.
I guess you could wander around the overworld map in LoZ but that was just a means of travel rather than a featured part of the game.

Well, yeah. We might not be happy about it, it might even be a **** move. But it is his right.
