I actually tend to mostly leave them alone ... other than looting their fields. They're not using them, and they're too dumb not to trample them. Also maybe sometimes their bookshelves. In 1.8 worlds where there aren't any Testificates, I might set up shop in a town.
Am I the only one who doesn't loot and pillage here? o.O
Nope, you're not alone. I fence in the entire village, put gates at the gravel paths, remake their farms in a better location (and put fences underneath the farmland so they don't trample the crops), release all the villagers from the prison they call home, and build my own house in an empty plot. :biggrin.gif:

Well, since I prefer to just stick with 1.8.1 'til the release, NPCs aren't a factor to me. So whenever I find a village, I go into MCEdit and move it back to the first village I found on my current save; I've got quite a city going now.
Sometimes I fix the villages for the little Testificates to live peacefully.
But if I get there and one of them is doing something dumb (drowning in a well, bathing in the forge's lava bowl, etc) I take out my trusty flint & steel and shove a drain in their gene pool.
On my (private) server we are building a network of road and rail systems that are connecting the villages we find. Everyone gets to chose a village they want to be "mayor" of and they are then tasked with rebuilding it and taking care of it (expansion, creeper damage, replant the fields, etc.)...or just blowing it up, it's their call.
It's taking SOOOO LOOOONG though...having to stop mid construction because we run out of materials and we are all adults (25+) so have jobs, responsibilities, etc.
The rail system I'm not even going to attempt legit, it's just going to be way too big to find that much gold and iron. Everything else though we are doing the old-fashioned way...digging a hole...placing a block...rinse...repeat.
As of right now, I've got 3 villages, one of which spawned directly on top of a stronghold (lucky me...it's my village (naturally)) and the biggest distance I'm going to have to cover with the rail system is over 1200 blocks long (ATM).
EDIT:
(one of these days I'll have to white-list some people to check it out...and to take a run through "Tony's Maze"...a 65x34, single width walkway, maze)
I fix the town's roads, add a wall, add torches, open every door, fence off the fields, establish a house within the walls, and defend the villagers/village from mobs.

Aside from books, what is there to loot?
Pretend I have a concentration camp.
Like I said, I like to gather up the villages and turn them into and entire abandoned city for me to call home.
Genius...
go check my egg. dont let it die!
