I just went to the first page from notch's tumblr and went through the pages and saw
in the post "My list of tile types so far" from the 21 may of 2009 that he already planned doing some things,and then mods have been made about it , and finally they've been added to vanilla (weird :biggrin.gif:):
Tile types:
Snow (on top of topmost tiles) Done :smile.gif:
Ice (on top of water. Slippery!) Done :smile.gif:
Sand Done :smile.gif:
Glass (pretty much just for looks, I guess?) Done :smile.gif:
Gravel Done :smile.gif:
Ore (only iron?) Done :smile.gif: and even more :wink.gif:
Metal block Done :smile.gif:
Wood (trees as well?) Done :smile.gif:
Crystal (not sure if it has a use, but imagine finding a large slab of crystal under ground!) What exactly does he mean with that? Diamonds or Lapis or Redstone or hat?
Coal (Combine with iron ore for steel!) Coal is done , but we still need steel :biggrin.gif:
Corals (awesome idea, solarblade) Only mod
Seaweed Only mod
Farmlands Done :smile.gif:
Crops on farmland Done :smile.gif:
Watered farmlands (automatic near water) Done :smile.gif:
Spikes (not 100% sure about this) Planned
Stone bricks in colors Nope , not really (only red :roll: )
Cloth in various colors (could make for nice carpets and tapestries!) Done :smile.gif:
Interactive tiles: (Not certain, nor very well thought through)
Pressure plate (Sends a pulse through all neighboring wires when stepped on) Done :smile.gif:
Lever (sends pulse when interacted) Done :smile.gif:
Wires going in various directions (sends pulse when a pulse is received) Done :smile.gif:
Pulley1 (pulls blocks up when a pulse is received) First mod then vanilla
Pulley2 (pushes blocks up when a pulse is received) First mod then vanilla
Explosives (blows up when a pulse is received) Done :smile.gif:
And even before that , at the 16 of may , 2009 he wrote this :
Creative mode
You’ve got infinite materials and build without any delay. Can be played both as singleplayer and as multi player.
You can share the maps with other players somehow. Perhaps just share the actual .level file manually?

Survival mode
Singleplayer / cooperative. You have a health bar and need to eat in order to keep healthy. You have to gather the materials you wish to use, and construction takes time. Mining through stone is slower than through dirt.
Monsters, animals, play on levels made in Creative mode, or play on random levels.
Does this mode need a goal?

Team survival mode
Same as Survival mode, except players are divided into two or more teams.
RPG Server , but only with mods ...
Fortress mode
After having built a level in Creative or Survival mode, you and your friends connect to another fortress made by some other people. The map gets bigger so it fits both maps, and you play a game on this map. Perhaps Capture the Flag, perhaps something else

As I already said , notch was planning to add it in a very early version of minecraft but just seemed to have forgotten it :/
