Furnace-minecart(s). Yes, it's slow. (You can walk faster.) But if you're not going to cheat and use InvEdit or server op commands - it's a way to manage it until you get enough gold for the required booster tracks.
Of course if you have heaps of gold stashed away somewhere, or if don't care about cheating... Then spam booster tracks. It takes a lot more of them to do hills than it does for flat ground. (Something like every third track to do a prolonged hill climb with little prior momentum.)
Many people still use the glitch boosters because of the resource cost (not all worlds have easy gold) or slowness with the official methods. But then again, you'll never know if a bug-fix will end up "breaking" them.
if you cheat to use booster tracks like I do (on my "Cheat" map). INVEdit and use nothing but booster tracks with a R-Torch every 16 blocks. For my not cheating map I don't use many minetracks. Usually to busy fighting the Mob horde to worry about faster traveling.
