It was the "stay civil" thing that got me laughing. Not necessarily everyone, but this stuff is NEVER civil. Just never. It's probably a law of physics or something.

You all may know me on this forum as the guy who keeps posting threads insulting Notch - but that was for the 3-month long "Ice Age" we had in updates.
This is where I stopped reading.
Also your thread is bad and you should feel bad.
See, sometimes I stop reading things, too. But then I close the tab with that thread in it, and don't post. I advise you to do the same. If you're going to criticize something, read it first!

For gods sake its a game company, the whole goal of a gaming company is to make money, not lose profit(a lot of it) by making a few of the buyers a little happier and losing potential money.
Again, a game, you play it, when you dont like it, what do you do, either get over whats making your mad/sad, or go play another of the billions of games that exist already.
Here is the thing with Minecraft. It is still in development, and has a ton of potential to it. It can change and fix what is wrong with it, and be absolutely amazing, not only for Mojang as a company, but the gaming community itself.
We have a game, started by one person, and still only has 10 (I think) people, and they are doing pretty well. It proves quality is better than quantity, or being done quickly.
Now, many people (like myself) bought this game because of what was promised. I bought the game early December, expecting half of the promised crap to be in the game by now, or stable beta releases, but instead lately it is just as many bugs, and less content, with less bug fixes. Its going backwards, in my opinion.
My money is gone, I know that, and I still have a decent amount of fun with the game, but his wanting survival to be made too hard rather than too easy is complete crap, no enemy provides a challenge unless I spawn 20 of them in the same area to rape me, as long as you have half a brain you can avoid lava, and falling off a cliff is just stupidity. What happened to dragons? NPC villages? A story? Adventure mode?
Beltir's complaint is actually legit. To be promised these things then it has been 2 years and a lot of it has not been implemented is a good complaint. None the less I see it a bit more personal.
Really why does it matter if notch takes a month between updates?
Thanks, Clintonxa. I also think the reason this thread is getting a lot of spam and all is because a lot of people aren't modders.
I have a tight budget but if I plan to start modding I will pay it up. Especially for the source code (though I made do it the original way at first) And a ModShop sounds good. Something where we can browse the free columns and people will either see how crappy or good some mods are or pay for decent ones. We must all remember that a majority of the community are not modders and a majority of the modding community do not create mods that are "long term"(no dropping of project in a month), or something decent.
As I mentioned before, Minecraft is a work of art, or sometimes it can be thought of as a baby. Notch's and Mojang's baby. And now he is giving his baby away for free :sad.gif:
Everyone be patient about updates (this has to do with mods, because remember, a lot of mods are made to fulfill notch's promises) notch says it is under development and we do not know if he will stop development 11/11/11. I have faith he won't stop dev.
So if he takes a mod I think it should be like the modder giving notch the license to implement it and make a credit's page.
I'm a bit disappointed that Notch backed down. Sure it was unpopular but I'd rather some way to ensure mods actually have an acceptable level of quality rather than the source code being open to everyone who starts a thread to ask "how do i maek a mod for 1.5 plz send teh coedz". With it free, people are likely to just click past the license agreement...

I don't care of the time between updates, its the time vs quality aspect. He has a lot of time, and we receive a low quality update. Compare this to when it was just himself, with weekly updates. We are getting the same amount of content (roughly) but over a longer time, with just as many bugs. That is what has the stick up my ass about these updates. I wouldn't care if in one month he added 1 new block, and 1 new feature, and fixed a decent number of bugs, without adding just as many as he removed.

I've never mentioned anything about the cost. All I mentioned was I bought the game looking forward to all of the promises. Now, I know my money is gone, and I will never see it again, so I will have as much fun as I can, and then leave this game to rot. Not only was this stuff mentioned, but it was either put on his to do list, or it is in the about section on the minecraft.net page.
Additionally, why I bought it early had nothing to do with the cheaper price. It was the "all additional content is free" part that I gave a damn about. Also, back when I bought it, it said I would get a finished game in the end. Back when I bought it, the to do list he had, and compared to the amount of content he was putting it, was what I expected from the game. I can name a bunch of games that was more expensive than minecraft, but it proves nothing. If you think it does, your oblivious to how things work. Better quality does not mean it is more expensive, it means it is of higher value. The difference is value does not mean cost. Value is what you can sell it for and expect to make money.

Never quite a fan of actually having to pay licenses for mods. Mods pretty much by definition exists because players are unhappy with the way things currently are and would like to expand upon the base game. Now if you take a mod and for people to pay for it, it wouldn't really be a mod anymore and bit more of an addon, course once you do that you're also pretty much prohibiting anyone from making something of the similiar sort that may come in competition with your now newly licensed money seeking addon. Hence you stifle the spirit in which the mod was created in the first place. Leave modding alone, now if they were to force people to pay for a mod based on your game without any sort of licensing from the original, that's a different story, however less you're explicitly creating a new content from scratch. You shouldn't restrict others that already have created and expanded upon an idea from distributing it freely.

Of course, this isn't a finished game. So your analogy breaks down at step 1. Consumers did buy it, though, so step 2 is accurate. I'll look at step 3 in greater detail momentarily, for now, on to step 4. Most consumers aren't mad about the amount of content. They're dissatisfied with the quality of said content, especially when compared to previous content and the developer's predictions of content. if you read posts that don't align with your own views, as opposed to skimming them, you would know this.
*This is the thing that gets me. You pay ONCE but then get super mad when he doesn't give you FREE CONTENT UPDATES? Blizzard needs a constant 15 dollars a MONTH to give out extra content. That would be like paying for a new copy of minecraft every time a new update comes out. Get over yourself. You deserve nothing more than what you bought.
You're right. I, and many others, deserve nothing more than what we bought. What I bought was a game in its Alpha stage, that included with purchase any and all future updates and versions for no extra charge. I will not say the updates are free, because they were part of the deal I paid for. I would like to receive what I paid to receive. I guess I need to get over myself. Furthermore, this bears mentioning. "Blizzard needs a constant 15 dollars a MONTH to give out extra content." when you subscribe to World of Warcraft, you are paying a monthly fee for more than updates. You are also paying for Blizzard to host servers on which you can play the game, which means a lot of hardware and bandwidth. It means upkeep on that equipment, and GMs to keep those servers at least marginally under control. Mojang provides none of that.
Oh boo hoo, you didn't get that content that was only mentioned once. Why didn't you just wait until the game was released then?
Because I did not want to wait for an as-yet unannounced release date, and because it was an indie game. I think indie game development is worth supporting.
Oh right, you wanted it cheaper.
Well, no, if I had wanted it cheaper I would have pirated it. But thanks for both putting words in my mouth and painting me as greedy. Ad hominem is the height of argument, you know.
You got what you paid for then!
Also, no. I'm still waiting for the released game I and many others were promised.
Not only that but the game isn't even released! So shut the hell up.
Again, no. This is a place for discussion, I think I will discuss.
Why do you think you 'deserve' all these updates?
Once again, because of that one time where I specifically paid for them as part of a package deal.
The game was only 15 - 20 bucks. I can name a bunch of games in a higher price range that don't even provide any new updates and last a quarter of a time that minecraft does.
What does the price have to do with anything? At no point in this issue does the amount of money matter, other than it being a value other than zero. Had I paid one dollar for minecraft, or one hundred, it still would not have bearing on this issue.

"When we release a pure bugfix update, people get VERY upset ("NOTHING CHANGED!").. Adding features gives us much happier users. But I do realize that it's only happier users in the short term." - Notch
You don't have any right to play this game and you certainly don't have any right to demand something of Notch. This game is a privilege, nothing more.
This is probably the DUMBEST post I have ever read.
I paid for a product, your damn right I have the right to it.
This can be argued in many ways, but when it comes right down to it yes, it is a privilege. In absolutely no stretch of the imagination is it a right.
Gah don't even dare defend or even encourage that Notch charge for mods. 20 million dollars in revenue for 7 people is more than enough money for the game. That's more money than some official releases made which had larger staffs. And Mojang didn't even have to create their own game engine to make Minecraft and that saved a ton of money.
Look at the facts here. Mojang wouldn't live nearly up the awards for Minecraft if Notch just cancelled the project all together. Not only this, but Mojang would get a very sour reputation that will last well into his next few projects. Do you think people will buy Mojang's next game if they prove themselves to be uncaring of the people who play their games?
The next fact is that he agreed to give mod support. He did not say he would charge. I mean he has been saying he's going to work on fixing SMP and he's done little else but reduce the amount of lag pits in SMP. How about fixing other things in SMP if you're so intent in killing mods EVERY update?
i wonder how much of the current (over-the-top) rage from this community comes from the agile development process.
that process is part of what made minecraft take off. but when people who aren't doing the day-to-day work on the game get fed an endless stream of raw information about so many ideas that may or may not ever become reality, it leads to some inflated ideas about what the game may or may not ever be. and some inflated ideas about their own importance in the process.
if this was a game being developed in a traditional, top-down way behind closed doors - I doubt you'd see as much passion (and as much anger) from the fanbase. on the other hand, maybe you'd also see a worse game. i dunno.
whether it's a good thing or bad thing seems like a matter for debate. i know i certainly wouldn't want to develop a game while balancing the demands of a fairly rabid fanbase. on the other hand, that rabid fanbase is certainly at least partly responsible for this game becoming as viral as it has.

I never heard of there being any fees to edit any of the morrowind games, any of the fallout games, any of the command and conquers, homeworld, half life and its ilk, etc, etc.
However, in the days where people will pay for a service like xbox live and indulge in a multitude of other inane microtransactions, the general videogame fanbase has truly shown they are a group of manchildren with disposable incomes. There was a time when "the customer is always right". Those times have passed, and now throngs of milquetoasts pander to a wealthy developer like some sort of deity, while attacking their fellow consumers who helped make the man his fortune. Notch and his company are nothing without us, the people who buy the game. We should speak our mind and bargain for better treatment, not keel over and praise them for making a game.
The sheer concept of paying to mod a game, and then having the developer take my mod at their whim and add it to their game to enhance its sales, is disgusting. He shouldn't have ever considered it, and I salute my fellow users such as the good Sargent for calling notch on his bull. Keep up the good work!
I look at Minecraft like I do any other pre-order for a game, except Notch was nice enough to let me play-test it for him as its being developed.
That's a good attitude, although I actually think of it as quite the opposite. I payed for the game as-it-was, because I liked it when I saw it. I literally didn't even realize that I was buying into a pre-release version when I made the decision to buy it.
Changes and updates just feel like an added bonus, and are certainly worth more than the $15 I paid for the thing.
I do understand disappointment and annoyance from some people -- when something breaks that they liked, or when they learn that something they were looking forward to isn't gonna happen. It's just the rage that I don't get. It seems silly.

I'm serious about this. Almost nobody does that. It's incredibly generous of Mojang to offer it - either for a small fee OR for free.
