Now I dont want to be flamed in this thread, I DO want people if you believe so, to counter my arguments please.
Now his number 1 problem with minecraft is that its at the HIGHPOINT in popularity NOW. Which is to say for PC gaming there isnt that many more sales ( compared to the 1 million already sold!! amazing!!)
What he needs to do is invest 90% of the money he made already to finish the game, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY create an Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network version of the games!
I dont want PC elite's ruining this thread about how it "wont work" and its impossible just stop alright. I understand it was made in java and all that but he could just sell the rights to microsoft(FOR xbox arcade ONLY not the PC rights) and have them do it. I mean even if they give him a crap amount or a small % of sales ITS BETTER THAN NOTHING right?
Most of his sales for PC are going to be in the alpha/beta version which makes no sense and with at least 50% of sales GUARANTEED free DLC... he is just throwing money out the window.
Its funny that someone has beat him to an arcade version of minecraft and he is doing NOTHING legally about it.
all in all he created one of the funnest and most creative games ever, it is praised by literly everyone who plays it and he made a GOOD amount of money, but considering how good the game is and how popular it is he missed out on A LOT.
Your argument sure is full of tons of assumptions. Not going to debate this, there is way too many assumptions. Also I stopped reading when you said Xbox Live and PSN versions.
Why don't people understand that Notch likes the graphics and so do most people who play. The graphics will not likely get better unless you yourself personally download an hd texture pack or something.
Anyway, I wonder who's made more money... Notch or you? I'm sure you're a better businessman. That's my first argument. My second argument is life isn't about money after you are able to support yourself and do what you like, so I'm sure he is content with his life and is happy to let us share the game he has created.
The problem is that you said MOST IMPORTANTLY it should be ported to Xbox. That is actually probably the last thing Mojang should work on because the game is, as we all know, in beta and is having content constantly added. If Notch & Co. had to develop the same content for three different platforms it would take three times as long for updates/fixes and the community would rage at the slow update speed even more than they are already, thus making the game avaliable for Xbox Live before finishing it is a bad business idea. Gettting the game finished should come before adding console support.
EDIT: And all the things other people posted while I was typing support the theory that Minecraft should not go to other platforms until it is finished and the developers won't have to waste time making it work on consoles that cold not handle MC as it is now.
Well, coming from a business and computery(Not a word :biggrin.gif:) guy, he is my.... thoughts?
Xbox Live/PSN: First of all, I'm pretty sure Java is compile once, run everywhere. Actually, I'm not pretty sure, I am sure. I'm not sure if this applies to the Xbox 360 and the Playstation3. Now, both of those systems easily have enough processing and graphics power to support the game, but RAM, is a different story. The Xbox360 has 512Mb's of high speed and highly optimized RAM. I think the Xbox360 could run it. The PS3 on the other hand, has only 256Mb's of RAM that is not nearly as optimized as the Xbox's. I do not think the PS3 could run minecraft with a pleasing render distance. Also, I don't really mind if minecraft was on either of these systems provided we had cross platform support. We would finally have more players coming in, and there would no be nearly as many servers because the people that use systems are usually inept when it comes to something like hosting a server.
Free DLC: Notch has already stated that all Alpha sales will not receive free releases of later Minecraft versions.
Arcade Version: Never heard of it, but I'm sure if it does exist, it will be taken care of very soon.
High Point In Popularity: I think this is the highest so far, but I believe once Notch adds more unique content(More mobs, underwater, a huge surplus of blocks, etc) the popularity will go even higher.

PS3 has less RAM, but you forgot about the buttloads of processing power, and that beats out RAM any day.

You still ned RAM to be able to keep track of all the blocks.

No programming language in the world is "compile once, run everywhere"; that would imply that every single device from our desktops to laptops, to gaming consoles, to smartphones, to microchips in cars used the exact same processor type and motherboard layout (to be more technical, it would mean the same assembly code would work on any device you put it on).
Java is however "compile once, run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM)", meaning any device you can install Java on (you install a JVM effectively), you can run compiled Java content on. And since there's a JVM for Macs, PCs, and Linux, those can all run Minecraft.

False assumption.
First, the lack of advertisement means many still don't know about Minecraft - I recently posted some things about it on Facebook and learned that less than 5% had even heard of it.
Additionally people are having children every minute of every day - and there will Always be new gamers.

Obviously you have No understanding of business. The idea is to Make Money, not throw it away.
Firstly, there is no Need to port it anywhere! Nearly all console owners also have a home computer - which means they can play it just fine now.
By moving focus from improving quality of gameplay and fixing bugs to getting it "out to multiple platforms" is a recipe for disaster when the microscopic few who Only play on consoles get the game and find it buggy and lacking - and spread word of that dissatisfaction.
( and in case you've missed the survey after survey- Over 93% of Gamers own a Windows-based Home PC - no other platform can make any claim to such popularity )
I dont want PC elite's ruining this thread about how it "wont work" and its impossible just stop alright.
It isn't that it won't work - it is that it is a waste of development efforts.

Wow! And you claim he is a bad businessman.
The Reason Bill Gates -Owner of Microsoft- is as big as he is, is because he DIDN'T do what you suggest Notch do.
When they needed an Operating System to release the new x88-based Home Computers with, Bill Gates refused to SELL DOS to them, choosing to instead License it to them.
* He also didn't Create DOS, he paid $50 for it from a classmate, can anyone name that classmate? *
Ignoring the fact that Microsoft wouldn't touch it because it is too Open Use already (too many home-brew versions of the De-o of the game) doing what you suggest would mean Notch could never improve the game again, nor create a new version or a game similar. Microsoft would hold the rights to do so, and they would never allow it.

I haven't seen or even heard of this, but you may simply be over-comparing.
There were games very similar to Minecraft -- Before Minecraft. If he tried to take legal action on a similar game created now, he would be establishing a precedent that could be used against himself for the creation of this game.
I've even been approached with 3 offers to create similar games SINCE I began playing it. None of the specs given to me would put me at any risk of litigation, but I refuse to take the contracts out of my Own respect for the work done by Notch and others.
You made me angry at pc elitist comment.
Ever heard of the sims?
Ever heard how it sold 16 millions even though its a PC exclusive?
There is alot more potential in terms of sales.
Since the game is simplistic and easy any kid can pick it up and play which means the sales potential is almost unlimited.
Also considering that children in my country start off with a PC instead of a console, i'd bet alot of kids would rather like it on PC.

Include 4-8 player Co-Op
Include everythign now but update the graphics
Sell it for 1200 MS points($15) and it will sell around another million guaranteed wtf wahts wrong with that?
You guys flat out underestimate the amount of people who buy XBLA and PSN games...
Notch is a millionaire without even trying to become one. How are your finances looking?
My Spigot/CraftBukkit plugins:
TallNether - Generate a 256-block high nether
FarLandsAgain - Restores the Far Lands
User: *BOOM* You're dead.
Cleverbot: I divide by zero and come back as an angel ninja.
You flat out underestimate how much processing power this game needs.
There is a (multiple) reasons why this game is not on xbla and psn network.
Anyway, I wonder who's made more money... Notch or you? I'm sure you're a better businessman. That's my first argument. can you imagine trying to quickly build crap WITHOUT A MOUSE?
god, kill me please.
next you're going to say they should develop AutoCAD for xbl because the PC market for it is saturated. derp.
