I just added a dithering feature. It's awesome, by the way. I never realized how much of a difference it would make, though it doesn't really help for extremely pixelated images.

Currently when you save an image you have to specify the file type? i saved it as test and got a file called test rather than test.png / test.jpg etc. it would be easier for the masses I imagine if you didn't specify it made it a jpg by default (or png whatever)
I also modified the save dialog so it saves to "wooly.bmp" by default

Interesting... so I could modify my program so you can have the option of loading a custom terrain.png, and it could automatically match the colors better.
I also added this as of 1.7 - just copy your terrain.png to the same folder as woolify.jar. (make sure it is called "terrain.png")
Ran a new test... cause thats what I do. Looks great, takes the color of the wool from misa's pack and looks much better, when dither is on it looks great, not so much though for high or low resolutions in the program (However in the game on High resolutions it looks good.)
Wooly.bmp is nice. No complaints for now. everything seems to work

I just updated to 2.0, which has several new features. First, a few performance upgrades - it now takes a fraction of the time to read a high-res terrain.png. Second, a super-extended color palette, with it's own scroll pane. Now non-wool colors can be used. Finally, click on the image, and the color of that block will be displayed. Using the arrow keys moves the selection. With all these updates, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few bugs, so let me know what you discover.
Also, I noticed that quite a few people have downloaded my program, but I've only seen one screenshot of it used in Minecraft. I would really like to see some of your creations.
So I just downloaded a sheet of Super Mario World sprites, opened it in Woolify, turned dither on, entered 0 in the dimension field, and got this - pretty sweet, right? I dare someone to make them all in Minecraft (though I wouldn't be surprised if someone already has).

tell us how many blocks it wants lol...
anyway, with the program made a charizard:

NOW, the program is not perfect. and i did do some things not outlined, such as the wings... it wanted me to make it white wings with blue lines thru it -.-
Okay...
The grand total is:
13326 Red
12435 Yellow
1004 Blue
4960 Green
40962 Black
Too much white to count since most of the image is white - I should implement some sort of transparency feature
8055 Orange
2185 Cyan
1459 Purple
3674 Gray
8067 Light Blue
689 Pink
7855 Lime
1589 Magenta
5859 Light Gray
You might want to download the latest version of the program yourself and run the analysis so you can play with other colors, etc. The original image is here: http://www.billyzone.com/Other/Lots-o-Sprites.png
I feel so dumb, it took me 5 minutes of using this to figure out it wont export to .schematic or world file, its just a tool to assist in figuring out what colors to use to manually make sprites. I just had to post a warning in case anyone else misses that important detail.

Sorry about the confusion - I changed the original post to reflect this. Maybe someday I'll take the time to figure out how to export it to those formats, but I don't think it will be any time soon.
I just wanted to announce that I've upgraded the program to 2.3, which introduced the ability to select a smaller portion of the image, affecting the color count. Right now it's a little computationally inefficient, so expect another update in the near future (tomorrow maybe).
Wow, thanks a million. I thought about making something just like this but I don't think I have the programming chops. It's almost perfect. The only thing I might suggest is to add options for other blocks besides cloth. That would broaden the available colors some.
Edit: whoops, you're right didn't see that. Great job.

I guess you didn't notice - if you click the down arrow under the color list, or use the mouse wheel while your pointer is over the color list, it reveals more (non-wool) blocks.

IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS MY WHOLE ****ING LIFE!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 S TO YOU!
EDIT: can you add another app that transforms the image into classic blocks? it can be part of Woolify or a seperate download entirely. either way is fine.

Thanks for the :Diamond:'s! I'll create a classic version for you - it shouldn't be too difficult, but give me until Saturday. I have a lot of work backed up that I need to finish first because I've been too distracted by updating this program.

Is it unclear that there are more color options by the layout of the GUI? If that's the case, I need to fix it. Also, let me know if you are satisfied with the full palette available - if you have other suggestions, I'll add them too. I know I left a few out just because I didn't think they were placeable without inventory hacking or the default coloring wasn't really homogeneous.
This is what I was looking for to figure out supply lists for some pixel art projects! Thanks!
I would suggest adding the option to show blocks by their names (instead of 'bone meal' -> becomes (white) wool), dandelion yellow -> yellow wool etc). When scrolling in and dragging sometimes dragging the image doesn't work and if you scroll in and the image isn't perfectly in the center it can go off of the viewing area (but you can get it back by scrolling out again and dragging it).
As promised, I just created a version using the classic colors - just make sure you do not have a beta terrain.png in the same folder while you run Woolify classic or vice versa.

I also changed the color names in the program. When dragging, you need to make sure you have clicked within the image region, otherwise it will not drag (this also means that if you move the mouse pointer faster than the image updates, sometimes it will move off the image and stop dragging - this tends not to happen with larger images). The way I set up the zoom was so the block under your pointer remains under the pointer when you zoom in - so again if you are outside the image region, the picture moves away. I thought the side-effects of these were fairly minor compared to the effort and extra computation it would take to fix them. I can make panning operate for the entire image pane though if you would prefer.

And the snow block needs to be added too! It would be good as a pure white block. Would also be very useful to have the code for each block next to the name, for people who are using /give commands.
A neat feature to add would be instead of showing the block type when clicked on it, show it on hover and when selected. It would be nice to just scan over the blocks to see what's needed. Also, a grid that can be toggled? Sometimes it's hard to know how many blocks are in a line if it's a continous line.
Another edit: When you select a region with the red box, it should tell you the dimensions of what's been selected. To work out how much space we'll need for the picture.
I'll see if I can add the snow block in the next update. Same with the block codes.
I had originally intended to make the color show on hover, I guess we're on the same wavelength (no pun intended). I'll work on that too.
The grid and selection size can be something I can add without too much effort also.
Great pictures also - I love to see Woolify in action!
I finished adding snow and a selection dimension indicator. I also made it so shift+arrows moves the big red selection chunk by chunk - it may help some people depending on how they work.
I also fixed a pretty major glitch that caused the selected color indicator to fail if a custom terrain.png was used. So if this would affect you, make sure you get the new version. I'll work on the other suggestions a little later.
