Mob being pronounces as "mobe" stems from it being short for "mobile" in "mobile creature", "mawb" comes from just the actual "mob" part of "mobile". Really, its not important, its a matter of preference-of-pronounciation, like potato and tomato.
A lot of people are saying, short for mobile... but what the hell is a mobile, and why would you call a group of creatures that? Is it some computing/scritping term.
Essentially.
The way I learned it in game programming was:
Mob = Mobile Object
Since mobs are an object in all the languages I've learned. So, I took the word and made a portmanteau in my head.
Moob
Personally, I've always pronounced it as "Mawb". Even after learning that I was pronouncing it "wrong". It just seems to roll off the tongue better.

WOAH, WAIT. Our eyes take pictures? Please tell me I can recover these pictures from another person.
You have to stick a thumb drive up their nose, drag and drop the pictures onto it, and then load them through your ear.
Copied from wikipedia. "A mob, pronounced /ˈmoʊb/,[1] mobile or monster..."
This is from the page about the acronym of mobile, BTW. So it is not a mob of people.

Mob(Mobe or Moeb) also refers to a short version of Mobile like you guys were saying.
I do not know the original origins of where the Mob(gang) came from but they are two different things.

Problem Solved.

Just because someone has a different opinion of how to pronounce a term for enemies or monsters you would attack them? Harsh.
Yes.
MoobPersonally, I've always pronounced it as "Mawb". Even after learning that I was pronouncing it "wrong". It just seems to roll off the tongue better.
But I still call them mawbs.
Seriously, did no one see this? Here, I'll even include the link.

Oh you mean the word mob representing all the creatures in the game?
M·ah·b.
I saw it. I just didn't care.
It's Mob like Bob, damn it! Lord Britian himself could tell me it was "moab" and I'd say "mawb"
Then I'd kill him and go to prison. Just because I know how many geeks out there would laugh about it.
Really?
...No
Woah its an angry MOB
YES!
Ya like art?

Is Minecraft even object oriented to have objects to have mobile objects to have "mobs"?
Don't forget that the player object is also a mobile object. Safer just to say "NPCs", which predates MUDs, and the internet.
Welcome to the internet, you must be new here.
I'm not new. I just hate how people fight over the most pointless things like pronunciations.
I pronounce it "mahb" with the same sound of "ahh" as in a satisfactory release of air or a gut-wrenching scream of terror.
Also, you can't apply logic to the English language. Everything about the English language defies logic.
