Lol, I always find those megacaves but i get lost to easily :3
Protip: Always place torches on the left wall when you're exploring new areas. Finding your way back out is as simple as just turning around, and following the torches on your right. Doesn't really matter which side you use, as long as you're consistent. Once you get in the habit, torch-placing on the "correct" side is almost instinctual, and you'll never get lost again! :biggrin.gif:
Ahhh megacaves. There's one on my single save that I've spent atleast 4 hours exploring. But most of this was me being lost. Hahaha. I'm gonna need to figure out an effective way to map it out. The 'putting torches on the left' sounds good. But there is so many.. junctions, that somehow I don't think it would work? I'll have to try it.
I've already reached bedrock in this cave system, but it seems to expand forever.
yes, megacaves. everyone has found one sometime. you know, those gigantic caves that are entered from the top, only explorable on peaceful, and impossible to map?
Just popped on to say that you're small time.
Peaceful? Set difficulty to hardest and start to use your memory.
Everything is mappable, nothing is impossible, nothing is peaceful.
you, are wrong. you'll crack when exploring a super megacave. ill wait till that point.
i let my friend make a new save game on my account in a (succeful) attempt to get him to want to buy minecraft. Right in front of his spawn there was a cave that is HUGE. we spent 5 hours exploring it and found countless stacks of coal, 2 stacks of redstone, we gathered 3 stacks of iron before we gave up on mining it all, and 14 diamonds. of course as soon as i left his side to watch the superbowl (packers ftw!) he fell into lava and lost all his diamonds and diamond tools.

I've had 2 or 3 mega caves.
The first was in my first ever serious world where I kept the save longer than a day. I saw a hole halfway up a 30-40 block cliff and decided to climb up because it seemed like a good home. Found a cave that went through the hill and out the other side, and halfway along it was a pit that I couldn't see the bottom of. Built some ladders, made some torches, started exploring. That one went down to bedrock and had multiple exits around my base - not just from mini caves, but from an entire cave system branching off and making a new exit. This was on normal difficulty because I hadn't realised there was a setting for that yet. Finding my way around was easy, and even now I can picture the route to get to different areas.
The next one I remember was on a save where I made a boat and went actively searching for a cave. I walked across the map until I found one, then would explore it and move on if it was small. The one I found was on top of a hill, and I remember coming back up with ~15 gold, 64 Iron ore, and multiple stacks of coal.
The latest one I've found has about the same as previous and I'm still exploring.
My only tips are:
Carry a sword. A bow is even better, but a sword will do. Be fast when you attack a bowman, and spam A-D so he misses.
Carry gravel and/or sand. You can use this to drop through holes and suffocate mobs.
Carry cooked meat. For obvious health purposes.
On one of my massive wanderings (I believe I wandered about 5 MC days away from the spawn point during this expedition), I stumbled upon a cave.
Easily, I spent 3 and a half hours exploring it and even then it wasn't all of it.
I didn't get the chance to finish exploring it as I died to creepers (two of them exactly) and at that time I didn't have a Minimap mod installed (meaning I couldn't find my way back).
I lost maybe 3-4 stacks of full Iron, about half a stack of Diamonds, 3 stacks of Redstone, and some Gold.
Some people play just to build monuments. Some play to be with friends. Others like myself play to see what's out there in the world.

One thing you can do in the future is create a cube of diamond or a cube of iron then place it just outside the cave entrance. It'll be easy to spot from afar and it's a safe place to put it for storage. Simply break it down the next time you need it.
I have a megacave on my map, and I have single handedly explored nearly all of it. It took forever (weeks?) but I've finally done it.
Saying it can only be done on peaceful is just inpatients. :biggrin.gif:
But, back on topic. Yes, I've seen megacaves. They're a grand adventure to explore. Mine goes from the top of the world (no digging required) and goes all the way to bedrock, branching all over the place in roughly a 400+ square block radius all over the place. I think I pulled about 30+ diamonds out of it a heaps and heaps of iron. Also found a dungeon..
And, how I know it's over 400 square blocks is because my server we have "Build zones" that only we're allowed to use, and my "Zone" is 300 x 300 blocks wide, and the cave enters my fellow player's zones on all 2 of the 4 borders of my zone.

I second this.

It even had a fail dungeon.
