I know this has probaly been done hundreds of times but minecraft needs them!
Ok say you start a new world and a little box pops up on the top right or left corner that has a title and the objective below....
Example:
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
[]Welcome to Minecraft []
[] First task: []
[] Collect 5 Wood []
[] Hint:Hold down left []
[] mouse button on trees []
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
And so on, and when you have done the task there could be a tab in the ESC menu titled "Tasks/Objectives"
And it has every task from the first to the last and if you have completed that task it will have a tick beside it.
When you get further on in the game there could have more complicated tasks such as "Venture into the Nether"
Where you have to collect how ever many obsidian to create a portal and go into the nether.
The nether would have seperate tasks to complete inside.
Before entering the nether there could be tasks to help you complete and survive in the nether such as "Lumberjack"
Collect 64 wood in preperation for the nether and so on.
The many different areas and places in the game would have seperate tasks so its not like a storyline as such but minor tasks that can be completed when ever you feel like it.

Your welcome. Unfortunately no I don't like the idea. The charm of minecraft is there are no goals. You decide what to do, and when to do it. By setting goals it takes away from this.

NO wrong you can still decide if you want to meet these goals or not
doesn't take away from the sandbox in any way if anything it adds to it.
I had a idea like this but was more stats based like
Times killed by creepers 159
Creepers Killed 10
Dirt blocks destroyed 1000
dirt block places 200
ect ect
PS why does everyone think we care if you dont like an idea "Unfortunately no I don't like the idea." gtfo please

True, I seem to remember a version of minecraft that had the button for 'Tutorial' on the menu, I think that would be a better way of giving the users a tutorial which seems like what you are suggesting only calling it by another name, for those users that couldn't be bothered to watch the thousands of tutorials on Minecraft over on youtube.com

A forum is a place for open discussion. A discussion often consists of multiple opinions, often opposed. I merely expressed disagreement with the idea put forward in the original post. If you have trouble with this concept perhaps an online forum isn't the place for you.
Moving on to the rest of your post I do like your idea of a stat based record of achievements. It would allow for many "bragging rights" conversations amongst friends.
