I can connect about 1 out of 6 attempts to the login server on any given day for the past week straight, that is not occasional problem, that is a constant problem, the problem is not hard to see for anyone with a decent education..
The authentication service being pounded by 1,000's of emails or even logins per hour is exactly the issue, it's time to split that into two servers, a machine dedicated to email and mundane website tasks and a machine or two (possibly 3 at this point) dedicated to logins would solve the problem, and not on one or two name servers, try round robin DNS, it's a cheap solution.
Another solution would be simply to have two login methods on the client, one for using the single player and one for logining directly into a private server, problem solved.
Trying to have a master login is at this point (and to begin with) lame and waste of time to code in as there has been a cracked client where password field is removed and you can pick any name you want and has a built in force updater, the authentication system is moot now..
All I know is I saw Nice TV and a new Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary edition Nintendo Wii in the "Office" Photos....
Tell me what does Wii have to legitimately do with Minecraft? Oh.. oh.. they're porting it? yea I doubt it.
Another thing, I counted at least 6 posts where people are saying it's just Notch... check the "Office" photos, I'm sure if you use your fingers you'll be able to count more then 1 person.

i use caps and big writing so people don't skip past my post and read it. it obviously works.
you can't access your own server, because all thew servers rely on the main server, which is currently down.
patience people, it won't be down more more than 24 hours...
the authentication service is also going to be slow if the email service is being pounded by 1000s of registrations an hour.
you can (if you have the technology and brains, not saying you don't) most likely download the programme and software, and make it so you can run it without notch's software.
the game is not out yet, which is also why there is occasional downtime. it is not very often (this is the first since the update, near a month ago) and this is the first "unexpected" downtime in a while.
notch is currently transferring the server, which wil then make it be able to hold an even greater capacity and make downtimes even more unlikely.
also, this should really be in the suggestion or server administration forum.
your wrong again, It has been down more then 24hours, Its been down for days, and only stays online for like a few mins then goes back down!
first off your post wont get missed by folks like me, but shouting in all caps shows immaturity to the serious conversation we are having.
and actually we can access our own server, how much do you really know about this game? Really....
We can connect to our home server and connect everyone even people across the internet to the "Lan" By using VPN, (Virtual private network) But the problem is, we don't have our settings... Such as the ability to be the OP of our server, because we have to go though the Authentication server in order to do that.
There needs to be transparency with the development of minecraft, better open Communication from the team
I still think my suggestion is so far the best
Move off of a Authentication server, having a authentication server is pointless at this point, its doing more harm then good.
Its affecting many people, Including newly paid users who paid for the game and can't even play it offline because they can't log in 1st, you have to log in at least once! to choose offline mode, so with the amount of downtime that's almost impossible to do so at this point.
Please allow us admins to legitimately host our own authentication servers for "Our servers"
this WILL reduce the amount of load on notch's servers and help reduce the amount of stress on his part!
give us the option to Authenticate users though our database so instead of connecting to notch's Stuff it'd connect to the admins Stuff instead.
weird, today is the first time i have had a problem, every other time it has been fine, must change depending where you are globally or something.
the team is very small, and notch is the only person who is guaranteed to stay, before now, people keep leaving/coming, so most of the time, its just him.
he probably doesn't want to let people fully have control of their servers, because this could lead to other people making profit out of his creation, if you see what i mean, which is, in effect, stealing.
however, like you said, it would reduce server stress, its a win-lose situation - uncrowded server - lose money ; crowded server, all the money its obvious which one he will choose... and unfortunately for us, its the money profit.
sorry about the caps, i have been on loads of topics complaining about notch being incapable and having no-proof or reason supported arguments, i thought this was another, and i'm quite fed up of it.
Sir not to be rude but your Yet again wrong... about the whole stealing part. People are already doing that as Is, You can look up sites right now even with the game in beta that are selling minecraft "Stuff" It happens for any game, It just means the game is liked enough that there is a demand for that short of thing.. So once again, That point is wrong, he wont lose any money,, Secondly Notch has racked in well over 20million dollars!, I don't care how small of a team he has, thats enough funds to buy 500+Servers! and to hire a entire IT Team some of the best in the freaken world!!!!!!!!
ontop of that i'd like to touch bases on the whole point you made a moment ago
however, like you said, it would reduce server stress, its a win-lose situation - uncrowded server - lose money ; crowded server, all the money its obvious which one he will choose... and unfortunately for us, its the money profit.
20million dollars is enough to retire for your entire life at the age of 16 to the age of 90.. if managed right and not spent crazly.. and invested into a bank properly..
secondly, Notch himself stated that once the sells stopped he would "Open source the product" he posted that on his own Website..
Open source means the source code gave out for free, and becomes Public Domain.
I hate to bump this, because of how repetitive this subject is.

Vs people who do know and make very strong points. but thanks for the free bump :smile.gif:
I paid for biomes and nether portals... and now I have coloured sheep, birch trees, dispensers, note blocks and cake. Win!
Of course I'm waiting eagerly for the server issue to be resolved, but SMP won't be in top shape until Bukkit is ready anyhow.

its not my Net doing this.
About opening source Minecraft, Notch said in his Faqs or somewhere on the website Minecraft.net that when sells dryied up, he'd give the "Code- source code" out to people, so in all honesty that hints to me right there that he really had no plans to make as much money from it.. now that he has, he has a responsibility to keep.
No matter how you look it, for a game in beta having this much difficulty, this is unacceptable for any game
As I stated a few times earlier , I have tested many games in alpha/beta that have had less down time then Minecraft....
EVERYONE STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT A GAME WHICH HAS OCCASIONAL DOWNTIME!!!!
EVERY ONLINE GAME ON PC HAS BUGS, SERVER DOWNTIME ETC (runescape, world of warcraft etc. GROW UP AND ACCEPT THAT RANT RANT RANT RANT RANT RANT RANT...
You need to chill.
This forum needs to chill. A lot of people are older than I am (20) and still act like a child that cannot accept the fact that this is Notch's development. I'm quite sure everyone can read a book, take a class, and create their own flawless video game.
Although we are very passionate about this project, we cannot guarantee that it will be completed - that's why we offer the discounted price When you purchase the game, you pay for it as it is right now. Future updates are an added bonus.
no offense but by taking pre-reservations, you are legally binding your self to At least release one version that is not beta... No matter how you look at it.. if you can not finish this Project then at least give us a chance to Work on it our selves for those of us who love it
My suggestion is one way to allow people to log in, Let us authenticate logins
if you can not release a None beta/stable please Refund everyone there 20dollars back who wants a refund
those who do not ask for a refund, you can keep. but if theres no Guarantee you can not get a None beta out, then I ask for a refund. because I paid 20dollars for the reserve of a game to be fully released.
This forum needs to chill. A lot of people are older than I am (20) and still act like a child that cannot accept the fact that this is Notch's development. I'm quite sure everyone can read a book, take a class, and create their own flawless video game.
Rather we choose to read a book, take a class, create our own video game is a moot point, no matter what you suggest to us its incorrect, at this point we Paid real CASH for a product that we are unable to use, we "Are unhappy about it" Most people don't even Charge for Beta's, this is the first game I've ever paid for in my entire life, to be in the beta of, beta's are normally Invites, none the less the fact we Paid for this game is what matters, you do not take someones money and give them a unusable product, if you choose to do that, you can expect the consumer (us) to return the product for a refund..
If they are not able to get a official release, I'd like a refund, is it really hard to refund me 20dollars for something I can not even use? I'd be happy to delete it off my pc if I got a refund. but I paid to play, I can not play there for its not working.
They can ether listen to suggestions, or start refunding. Its really that simple.
i use caps and big writing so people don't skip past my post and read it. it obviously works.

he didn't have original plans to sell it, but now that he has started, he will have to keep it for sale, otherwise he would have to refund everyone as it would be unfair.
as i also said earlier, this is the 1st day i have had problems, so for me, this is still quite good for where it is in development (from what i have read elsewhere, problems are varying country to country)
when you try to open minecraft.net, do you get error message 502 and 503? if so, what do they mean?
this single error, has probably caused the most controversial talk (i think thats what it should be called) over minecraft in its history...

This has been happening Every day, I have ran countless tests To ensure it was not my end doing it. or just my friends trying to be funny.
I have read the disclaimer no matter how you look it by taking a Pre reservation of a game and not releasing a "None beta copy" You are in direct violation of that agreement,
I'm not going to get into a pissing match with someone, and You trying to provoke a Rant from a Conversation that is rather serious is Sad and has made me shake my head
Its really Simple, Just as any game company, if you can not have a working Product, The least you can do to support your fans is to refund those who Ask.
I Would like a Refund if you guys have no Plans to release a Full Client That is "None beta" or have no plans to Fix the stability issue..

I have to say, after reading this guys rant, I have to agree: what have we paid for? The latest login issues are unacceptable, yet there is no one to hold accountable. We've all paid for a product that doesn't exist yet, its a little ridiculous when you think about it.
What's more ridiculous is that you don't know what you've paid for. I thought it was fairly obvious, if you're not a savvy enough consumer to do a little research before purchasing a product, perhaps mummy and daddy should take away your allowance.

So I ate it to make sure they are safely fixing my broken **** which they broke. Thank you tech support. Enjoy your extra time off to stay away from my computers.
right now the site has been down for almost a hour+? I have been unable to successfully load the page up,
Even as we speak I am trying to load the page up and its just "Trying to load" with no load, and gives me Problem loading page, Page is temporary unenviable, Paging the Ip of the page shows the site isn't up, (Who ever is running the site anyways)
Rather its in another county , Sure there could be a downed Hub or line somewhere between us or them, but none the less, I'm bringing this matter up because I feel Scammed, Ever since I paid the 20 I have been having nothing but error's/or just down right unable to log in, Heck my account on the main site, wouldn't even let me log in I contacted the email in order to get my account fixed, month later no response no account fixed, I had to register a new account, if that doesn't say something I Don't know what does.. and I wasn't mis typing my user name or password. Betas are meant to be tested, but we can't test it if we can't log in, The solution to that is to remove the Authentication server that's causing the problems or giving us a way to admin our own.
For downtime, its been down every day, I'll start generating logs for the website and client/server. I'll ask my roomie to start the logging process today.
Its not only about it being down for one day Read the post before you open and insert foot
