Mira, do you have a decent internet connection? Also what is your system specs?
If either of these were really the problem, its all the more reason the refund should be given already.
I don't ever remeber there being a "System requirments" page when i got minecraft. Maybe that changed, let me know if thats the case.
Same for the "Internet speed requirement". It would be strange if you needed the best internet connection out there just so you can log in once, to play the game offline forever. [which is half the fun imo]
In reality all we can do is sit and wait till feb 1st.

Well, it's too bad that after waiting for the servers to update, you found out that Minecraft was not the game for you. Yep, one of the things I think that Notch should do, before adding content, is updating customer support. The fact that you have to wait so long to get a reply is the result of the fact that the entire process is ran by a single person, who has this to say on the large amount of emails coming in as of late:
thanks, we're trying to catch up in the massive flood of e-mails. We'll get to it asap!
(Well, the person who asked was actually regarding gift codes, but they all come down to the same thing)
Once/if Notch gets that all tidy, THEN, I think, would be the proper time for him to review the communities (which, similar to many other games, is actually quite unrepresented as a whole on these forums) plea.
I wish you luck still Mira, and hope that some day, you might consider picking Minecraft up again, next time on a glossy dirt-patterned box with the words "MINECRAFT" printed on the front in 3D letters that bulge from the box. Maybe a creeper face somewhere on the package. Heh, now I'm getting off-topic.
You either bought MineCraft when it was in Alpha or Beta... either way... you should expect downtime and bugs. That goes along with Alpha/Beta.
What you paid for was a reservation of the game. Go to GameStop and pre-order a copy of Diablo III and see if you can play in the Beta of the game. Probably not.. Notch is doing you a favor by letting you play his UNFINISHED game.
Yes... it's annoying... but it's to be expected.
But to address your specific concern.. there are ways to bypass the authentication. Some server admin mods out there have IP based authentication or ways to disable authentication all together... though I really REALLY discourage this.
he asked if I used a downgrader by some chance, I'll check when I can see my screen better.

They'll do anything to make legitimate users with problems look like trolls, huh?
