Mod announcement: This thread is the product of one guy complaining that three topics were nearly the same, so they were merged to create this. Previous discussions will be displayed in an odd order, given that the contents of the previous threads are literally piled on top of each other. Please Go to Page 14-15 after This post.
I know this is probably not the place to post this, but as I see no other topic/threads that are Even close to such a topic I am placing it here
First off.. The amount of consistent Downtime Minecraft is having for a game we payed for is Crazy...
Please allow (Those who run a server) to have our own database or something so we do not have to go though the Authentication Server, this way those who are hosting servers, people can log into them without having to worry about Minecrafts "Authentication servers" being down.
for the past week now, Minecraft has been going up and down up and down up and down, and Its just Silly, one min its working and the next min its not
Its not my network, Its not my internet, I have fios 30Mbps both up and down, Our net is working fine and Countless of our friends have reported the same issue. So I know its not Us.
by giving Server admins the option to bypass Authentication Server we can have our own scripts for "Login" to avoid griefing etc, (My roomies already created a script that works fairly well, needs to bugged fix) that allows people to log in to servers by registered names to our server.. if you don't say login in 3 mins or less you get booted
This will allow us to play minecraft on our Own servers with our friends without worry the main servers are down which is how you connect, Please do something about this instability problem'(s) or Refund us our 20$+ bucks back.. Because This is stupid we paid for a product we can't even really use, and don't say play Offline, I bought the game to play with friends, the multi player works fine if you can freaken log in.
You either bought MineCraft when it was in Alpha or Beta... either way... you should expect downtime and bugs. That goes along with Alpha/Beta.
What you paid for was a reservation of the game. Go to GameStop and pre-order a copy of Diablo III and see if you can play in the Beta of the game. Probably not.. Notch is doing you a favor by letting you play his UNFINISHED game.
Yes... it's annoying... but it's to be expected.
But to address your specific concern.. there are ways to bypass the authentication. Some server admin mods out there have IP based authentication or ways to disable authentication all together... though I really REALLY discourage this.

This has nothing to do with the game being in Beta, and I'm sorry to say using your same "Suggestions" I have played many games in beta My list of beta testing games is longer then the amount of Threads on this entire forums >.>
and every single game I have beta have ran with Minimum Downtime, but the issue we are talking isn't even "Game related"
It has nothing to do with the Game, but what the "Game connects to" witch is the Authentication server, its not the game that went down, its the Server going down, and the Instability of a server from a person who made over 1 million dollars with this game concerns me greatly,
I run a Business where I live, we deal with computers, Fixing, Building, server running etc, we have ran servers that handle much more crap then Minecraft even does, for like 5-20dollars a Year.. so there is No excuse for a Server that can not stay running, running a very Low end game.
the game is wonderful, but the Server instability specifically at "BETA" is unacceptable, it makes me wounder if the problems will be fixed daring the release, for the amount of Cash the creator made, You could put a slight bit of that into a more stable hosting provider or server... or at least give us Admins the "Ability" To legally/legitimately bypass the servers when its having issues.
I have beta tested thousands of games in my life, and many of them do Go down yes, but not every freaken day.. multiple times a day... this is just silly, I Could expect such a thing in Alpha phase but not beta.. and considering its not even game related but Server related, That hints to me a few things
1 : someone doesn't know how to set up or run or maintain there server properly
2: the hosting provider has no clue what they are doing, and you need to change hosting providers
3: if your running it from a server pc in your home, You need to configure it properly and set it up righ
4: invest in better server software or such, what ever is causing the downtime, (There are ways to test this)
Source - Software IT - owner of pdx pc medics.. and I have ran servers before for larger scale things then this
I am not being rude, but it just bothers me knowing 1 single person racked in 1milliondollars but the servers can't even stay up stably for a single day....
Also hes not doing us a favor by letting us test his unfinished game/software.. We are doing him a favor, we are the fans, we are the people who donate, and have bought the game, and Have tested it for him, if anyone's doing anyone's a favor its Us for spending countless hours testing the game in alpha and Beta and compiling bugs reports and so on to help Him make the game more suitable/playable.
that's a whole point of "Alpha and Beta" Is to have help testing it
Yes, you are absolutely right.. but it's not like he is not doing anything about it. There is just an overwhelmingly large amount of people using Minecraft that his infrastructural can not handle it right now.
Maybe you do... but if you read his blog/twitter you would have seen where he tweeted about the server being down and how it's being looked into currently.
Notch never ever expected for MineCraft to get as massively popular as it did so quickly and his systems were not designed to handle such large amount of traffic.
Granted I do think that his money/resources could be managed in a better way as to fix these problems... rest assured that they are not unseen and will be fixed eventually.
This kind of experience would never be acceptable in a final release stage of a software platform, but essentially MC is fresh out of Alpha; I think it's to be accepted, if not expected.
edit: And another point. You can't compare MineCraft to other games... MineCraft is an indie game. He may have a bit of money now, but until recently Notch did not have the resources and experience that the other game developers have/had at their disposal.

None the less I still think we need a way for our own servers to do the authentication so that way we can Release some of the "Load/strain" from Notch's servers, this is simple to do, and is very fundamental, if he ads this those who run servers can load that "stress" over all the different servers, taking the strain away from the main website and his own servers for those who want to use it.

Yes... meanwhile removing his method of DRM and allowing anyone with a pirated copy of minecraft to play on any server that adds them to their authentication server.
For Notch to maintain some kind of positive control on who is allowed to play the game online, he needs to maintain his own Authentication server.

Yes it should be expected to a point
how ever he does have the money now to fix this problem and should be number one priority nothing will kill a game faster in beta than instability indie or not.

your aware even with the DRM they can still do that, they already figured out how to force update Mine craft to all latest patch's and allow anyone with a pirated copy to play on any server.... so by not removing it your hurting the legitimate players even further... so please don't use that excuse, its very invalid.
I have to say, after reading this guys rant, I have to agree: what have we paid for? The latest login issues are unacceptable, yet there is no one to hold accountable. We've all paid for a product that doesn't exist yet, its a little ridiculous when you think about it.
o you dont have to Click the link I DID NOT WRITE THIS
Here’s my biggest issue with Minecraft: Notch. D00d’s a multi-millionaire now, theres no excuse to have cheap ass website and database hosting. Half the time now the site doesn’t load, or I cant log into the game. Hiding under a ‘beta’ tag, after charging the world millions for your game, is BS. At this point there’s no excuse for not having better hosting, it just costs money, which he has a lot of now. Making like 100-200 grand a day, I think he can afford a couple hundred bucks a month. For a long.. long time.
Second Issue: Hire some damn help. Look how many talented mod makers are on the forum, hire some of them to add content. How many talented java coders are on there? Hire some of them to fix multiplayer issues. Hire someone to improve the database and deal with the website. All the crap you obviously don’t have time for.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy cuts and runs. If I got 20+ million for an unfinished product, with no real obligation to finish said product, I’d openly laugh at all the suckers who paid for it and drive into the sunset with my pimped out 2011 Camaro (that actually transforms into a robot). But hey, maybe thats just me… I am an asshole. *shrugs*
I am in no way defending notch but trying to make ppl look at what minecraft really is. Its a project from somone who really thought it would never take off like it did. I have had my own programs and felt a kind of personal ownership to them and would be aggrivated by others working on them. And as to the mod ppl many of them never stick arounf for very long not the time at least it takes to work on a project long term. Even hey0 the best server mod had its creator baisly say he is tired of minecraft and abandoned the project. So if I was notch I would be leary or hireing any of these guys.
Now lets take a game made by a big developer and put it into perspective. Lets take world of warcraft. Blizzard makes billions of dollars a year yet they suffer from the same problems minecraft does. There servers go down for extended periods of time every week, there login messes up from time to time, there game has bugs in it just like any other program. So really considering that only one guy is working on this game it works pretty damn good. Also another point is ive actually done some network programming and some programming in general ( in c not java it happens to be) and sometimes trying to locate bugs or figure out why such and such does not work can be difficult at times.
Lastly minecraft is yours once you buy the game your not buying a licence to use the game so you are free to hack away at it all you want, most programs would froun upon this kind of activity. I only paid about $20 US for a game ive gotten hours of entertainment value out of and each month ive seen more stuff to play with, I think from what I have paid for I have gotten a great deal. I figure if i can get more out of a game i dont have to pay a monthly fee to the better.

I have been lost in the nether for a few days now.......
It is inexcusable and unacceptable, but the fanboys will vehemently defend him.
It's inexcusable that Notch and his staff are moving servers to resolve the slowness of the servers? You're complaining that they're fixing things?
You're weird.
Yes, Notch earned some money with this game. And now he's hiring people and building a company. It takes time. I don't know how old you are, but you will learn one day that in the real world, things don't always happen instantly, and there's often a lot of administrative work one has to do.
For what it's worth "cheap-ass Notch" is migrating to a cloud-based system hosted at Amazon, even as we speak.
Because he had no choice but to do so. And he also waited way last minute to do this
He put black oak floors in his office before he upgraded the servers think about where his priority is from what he has shown us this far.
Now like i said i am in the flooring business and oak flooring will range between $7-$12 per square foot
just a 12x12 room would run him around 1300 dollars and looking at the photos from his blog showing his office he is prob dealing with $4000+ in flooring

its about time someone agreed with me. i agree with you 100%
I alsoo agree 100%. Would just like to add, that even when the servers are down, the game is also still fully playable in it's Single Player format. I admit that multiplayer is far more entertaining and hope some day that it becomes stable and reliable (would be nice to be able to run my own server without needing to connect to his server, but I understand the reasons behind it). Until then, I will play and enjoy the game, and when it has issues, I'll go back to single player mode and have fun there too.
