Well...there is a difficult solution I can think of that won't sacrifice Aesthetics. Go to the roof of your buildings, and extend the wall by a block or two, on the roof itself place a layer of logs (not planks) and light it on fire. You won't notice it unless you go out of your way to do so.
If being an open roof is crucial to design then just use glass, it let's light in and it's fun to watch monsters hop around impotently on top of it.
So what exactly makes a moat aesthetically unpleasing? Isn't a moat of lava pretty cool looking?
doesn't quite fit with the "Castle" look. not if you're going for the authentic look. I personally think they're an eyesore if I'm trying to do something that looks kind of realistic. of course, that doesn't stop my Evil Citadel from having pouring lava from the tops of the towers >:biggrin.gif:

I got all my friends to play minecraft.
Which means I got 0 people to play.

MY friends actually realize that real life has better graphics than any game, and that gameplay is infinitely better. Thus they all play Minecraft.
Hey its not my fault trees are sneaky, you think they are all gone and there is no threat but ooooh no there is a massive forest lurking in the shadows just waiting to catch fire, also I liked your score-out. :smile.gif: <3

As the people in this thread have said, adding new, exciting features to mobs makes the game more interesting. If this means your current fort's defenses are now open to the new, more difficult feature, that should be a good thing! You now have to design your way around it. Instead of wanting to remove their climbing ability, why not make an aesthetically pleasing deterrent? (And if lips on your walls don't sound nice, think of something prettier and more efficient!) While that may sound fun to me, I can understand it if you don't. In that case, Peaceful mode was made for you. And if you still want monsters in your game, sans climbing spiders, I'm sure there will be a mod for you.
I just realized how dirty my parenthesesed sentence sounded.

Look, I'm pretty sure the spiders are always going to be climbing now because well.. It's freaking awesome. They should climb, you shouldn't be able to hide in your little walls. Build the lip design or stop complaining. Or a lava moat. I mean really, it's not a big deal at all.
The reason it's lame having climbing spiders isn't the realism. It's a game, the world isn't made of blocks, put up or shut up. The real reason is that it limits your creativity if you chose to play on survival.
I love survival and I get what a lot of people are saying but it really does limit what you can do. (if you want to avoid spiders coming into your area) Now, you can QQ me and all that stuff but when it comes down to it, the game is about creating what you want to. Spiders shouldn't be able to scale walls. That defeats the purpose of the game in my mind.
I don't want moats or to have to build my walls a certain way to stop the spiders. Don't tell me to go play on creative either, that's just a cop-out because you lack real argument. Survival and avoiding zombies and things while im mining or expanding is something I rather enjoy.

Tip: Keep your diamonds off your bar and in your bags. You may accidently drop 10 of them into the lava. Uncool. /Facepalm

I do understand where you are coming from but there are also allot of people that would like survival mode to be more about survival and that means there must be more danger. Maybe ask for a mod to stop them from climbing? Other than that im not sure how you would fix your problem.

No.
I'm so proud at you're obvious intelligence regarding my post. Please just never post anything ever again.
Added note: Seeing that the game is about creation you shouldn't have to limit yourself that way.

Personally, I don't see it as a limitation exactly. I see it as a challenge that can be overcome.
And once it is, I can put windows in my wall so I can watch the spiders fail to come up, and relish in their pain and suffering.
Again, I see that point. It's still limiting me with looks. It's not all about the challenge of keeping mobs out. I guess it's not THAT big of a deal because it's not. It's just a pity. I just really hate the "play creative mode" and the "it's more realistic" arguments. It's not a "realistic" game it's a game world made of blocks and zombies and exploding creepers. Illogical argument.

I don't have one personally, but I'd think it would be extremely cool looking.
