This change has pretty much made all of my future building projects rendered null. I'm big on building walls. It's a fun thing to do, I think at least. I'm working on a project currently to encompass "my land" with wall enclosures and what not. Walls were always a safety feature--you can walk on them at night without much worry if you were up high enough (and my walls go up about twelve blocks, so I'm good). My main "town" has sectors separated by walls.
Now with this update, spiders happily climb over to come murder me when I'm chilling in my garden or something or anywhere else really. What exactly is the point now of making walls now that they are 100% useless? Half of the enjoyment that came from this game came from creating what ever you liked--in this case, for me, it was walls. Now that's pointless.
Yes, I've seen the "lip" design. Sorry, I don't have an extra bazillion cobblestone to make up for the thousands of blocks that make up my walls (this is just for my home alone, not my wall project). The lip design looks absolutely ridiculous, like some Lego castle design. I'm not sacrificing aesthetics for a random annoying update.
So consider this a "I'm not playing Minecraft until this changes" post. As updates go on it seems that Notch's idea is to turn Minecraft more and more into Dwarf Fortress, wanting us to retreat into dark dungeons underground to find safety. What's next, flying attacking mobs that poop lava?
You may now whine and complain about, "Oh, you're so casual!" or "Oh, just use the lip design!" and other weak arguments that require no effort on your part to regurgitate what you've said about this issue on other topics.
Its makes the spider more realistic, plus, it's a damn spider. Stop being such a ***** and hack em' away with a sword or bow. And if you're still complaining, make traps for them.
I agree. If you like it being realistic this isn't even realistic. A spider that big wouldn't manage to climb anyway.
I think that climbing spiders ruins the game. A major point of the game is to make nice and cool things. Not making it ugly due to avoiding spiders...
EDIT:
Spiders were supposed to be unable to climb sand and sandstone. And I can confirm that spiders CAN climb on sand.
I just tested it in-game.
The easiest solution I can think of is to use a layer of Sandstone anywhere in your walls, it doesn't look horrible and it's easy to make...Or do what I do and make a fire moat from logs.

Everyone else with idea like moats, cacti defenses, etc. What part of aesthetics did you not understand? I'm not ruining design to overcompensate a terrible addition.

Well there is no need to complain so much about one thing, spiders can climb in real life you know? It makes it better, more challenging, if its that much of a problem to you then design a defence against it.
Do zombies in real life groan as well? Or do skeletons walk around shooting arrows from their hands?
When the hell was Minecraft about "real life"? Minecraft is not a real life simulator, it's a game, and when it comes to games, gameplay triumphs over reality 11 out of 10 times.
Creatively compensating for varied attacks is part of Survival Mode. If you don't like having to deal with monsters, perhaps peaceful is a better style of play for you?
There are plenty of aesthetically pleasing ways to compensate for wall climbing spiders.
TL;DR: Get creative and adapt, or switch to peaceful.
So you have a large wall eh? If you can't be bothered to turn on peaceful while gathering ore for the lip technique then just mine out the inside of the wall like this:
It should work. If not, try to be creative.

While it is fairly annoying, It's just something you have to get used to. All my walls now have a lip built into them as the post above shows. Works perfectly.
Another way to do it...

This is the most efficient one, as it uses half the blocks of doing a complete lip along the wall, yet is still spider proof because spiders are 2 blocks wide.

You say these things as if they were bad.
Seriously, I wish Notch were half as merciless as Toady is about difficulty.

Just like above posts. The walls even look better like this.
