Ambient noises used the scare the hell out of me... the shrieking, the yells, the weird noises, they all terrified the hell out of me, sometimes inducing "get the hell out of the cave" panic attacks.
But now that I know they indicate a 3x3x3 block of unlit cave nearby, well, ambient noises have suddenly become something I want to hear when I'm digging.
Science ruins everything.
and now you spoiled it for me! i am mad at you.
you will get no cake.
I have to admit, Minecraft is truly frightening once you get really into it. Especially, and I mean ESPECIALLY when you're digging and you come across that errie "cave discovery" randomized noise.
It also doesn't help if you hear zombies or skeletons down there.
My first day in Minecraft went like this:
#1: I know there are monsters in Minecraft, so I set out to dig a dirt shelter immediately.
#2: Hide in house WAY too early.
#3: Oh dammit I didn't mine any coal. Better get some wood.
#4: Oh dammit it's night.
#5: Oh crap there's a zombie.
#6: *hide in a dark dark cave*
#7: *plop down torch*
#8: ssssSSSSS...
#9: OH SHI-
I couldn't go to the bathroom without my parrot after my first day of minecraft for about 3 days.
Im such a wuss. ;-;

All right i've been thinking.. when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade, MAKE LIFE TAKE THE LEMONS BACK. GET MAD! I DON'T WANT YOUR DAMN LEMONS! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE?
Yeah this game is definitely scary, makes me jump a lot. But nothing compares to going into the nether for the first time, with your portal way underground and hearing all the screams and stuff from ghasts, only to break through to the surface right underneath one and have it shoot at you.
Walking down the beach, looking for a spot to make a new house. Place down a crafting table on the sand, and it collapses into a semi exposed lava pit that i hadn't noticed before. Luckily the bit i was standing on was over solid ground, still gave me a fright though
Update:
A Typical Day On My Minecraft Server
First MC Day: Gather 50 stacks of wood. Find creeper on top of house roof.
First MC Night: Patch up a creeper hole while simultaneously being attacked by 2 spiders.
Second MC Day: Go pick up MORE wood. Kill a pig. Eat cooked pig. I invite a friend.
Second MC Night: Around 5 zombies, 3 creepers, 3 skellies, and 2 spiders spawn outside my house. My friend detonates two creepers outside at the town square.
Third MC Day: My friend quits Minecraft. 2 creepers, 2 pigs. I hear an "oink" sound. I jump around, thinking it's a creeper. I accidentally drop my shovel. When I pick up my shovel, sssSSSSs....
Third MC Night: Hiding out in my mine, cut off from my house by the creepers. I decide to do a sensible thing and dig downwards to the center of the earth. Over there, I find a dungeon. My friend decides to shovel out some gravel and finds a dungeon right next to that dungeon. I get killed by an army of zombies. My "Friend" decides to steal my stuff, which included a gold record and 2 saddles.
Silent Hill games (only 1-4) have scared me. And when I say scared, I mean FREAKING OUT and turning the system off. But Minecraft makes me uneasy in a different way, similar to Fallout vaults. I get real claustrophobic down in the caverns underground and panic about never getting back up and out to sunlight. I know it's ridiculous but that just terrifies me in these two games.
Yeah, Minecraft is its own brand of scary. Playing Metroid Prime, ( ) I would often get nauseous and have to stop playing. I don't know whether it was fear or not, but it probably was.
Minecraft is a different scary, very situational. It's scary while things are going on, but the aftermath can usually be laughed off. That makes it a more enjoyable kind of scary
I was just collecting sand about two blocks beneath the water, when suddenly I was sucked into a current that took me way way down into a pitch black cove. I couldn't see a thing, but luckily I had some torches, so I threw one in front of me hoping there was a wall there. There was. And right next to the torch was a squid, mouth facing me with tentacles outstretched, it was the first squid in the game I had ever seen. I screamed out loud, and a split second later i was dead.
I've been playing amnesia for about a week, and it is way more psychologically disturbing than minecraft, yet it hasn't made me scream out loud like minecraft has (...yet). I agree with whoever said that minecraft caves are similar to fallout vaults, not disturbing but definitely creepy.
Minecraft has a way of igniting those basic human fears of things like dark, unexplored caves and deep chasms into which you could fall at any moment. Not to mention the fact that you are the only human in the world facing a bunch of monsters. Also, the fact that you can relate to the character's experiences makes scare stories such as the Herobrine myth all the more believable and frightening. Minecraft is definitely one of the eeriest and most atmospheric games I have ever played, and that's saying something after finishing Ravenholm in Half Life 2...

Look at the nearest doorway. Creepers are that tall. Good luck sleeping tonight.
Lol, it sometimes frightens me, but doesn't scare me, I would think Amnesia, Dead Space and FEAR is scary.... but then again, different people have their own opinions.
Even to this day, after over 4-5 months of playing minecraft, it still scares me. Well, maybe scare isn't the word, more like startles me. It's those damn creepers, man. No matter how much I light it, they'll squeeze through every crack and crevice to find me. And well, you know the rest. I used to get startled by Skeletons and run, but that was my mistake. You're supposed to whip out you sword and take them out immediately. I've never played these horror games, so it took awhile to get used to. I'm a SimCity and RPG type guy.
unless you're leaking diamonds out your ass, only go to the nether with iron tools, otherwise you'll waste the diamonds, the first few times, you either get raped by ghasts,or fall into a giant ocean of lava.

I am but a Prophet. I only speak the truth... Most of the time
Geez, minecraft is giving me serious scares.
Even the epic experience in the school in F.E.A.R 2 didn't give me such paranoia and scares like an unexplored cave with a lot of unexplored and dark ways in minecraft give me.
Nothing compares to the sudden sound of an arrow cutting through the air and racing towards you, or the strange sound of a spider behind you, just for you to turn and don't see anything.
There's nothing like digging a square directly under you and falling to a huge, dark chamber, filled with monster noises.
Notch managed not to just make a survival game, but a creepy game too!
I played through the singularity campaign 3 times and jumped every once in a while at something scary... but minecraft is just rediculous, I have literally jumped back and rolled back 5 feet in my chair when i was in my underwater city and a zombie fell on me
haha
I was down in a mine we found on accident in SMP earlier, and my friend's internet cuts off on him again. So I was down there alone, waiting for him to come back. Only place we hadn't been yet was a dark room pretty high above us (we were in a pit-like layout), and I had heard zombies and arrows for quite a while, thinking they were below us. Out of nowhere, after sitting for about 5 minutes, two skeletons and six zombies come pouring out of the hole all at once (not exaggerating numbers either). I got the skeletons down, but the zombies killed me. Luckily, I found the place before my items disappeared and I took all the zombies. We went up there and it was nothing but an empty hole. So I don't see how so many mobs could be there all at once like that and us not see them.
Sorry, bro.

Which is effective, and not necessarily bad.

Really? Caves don't scare me much. And nowhere near as much as the school in F.E.A.R. 2.

I think what disturbed me most about the school in F.E.A.R. 2 was that it was an Elementary School with "Wildcats" as their mascot.
My old Elementary School's mascot was the "Wildcats". Oh the memories...
