I don't know much about this stuff, so it may be a stupid question, but how will there reasonably be a large communities on one server like everyone keeps talking about? Most servers begin to lag pretty bad when it reaches just 20 players, let alone several hundred. Who could afford to host such a enormous server?
If anything I think it may be even faster. It will only show the players and their movements only as far as you can see the chunks of land appearing. Its not like you see hundreds of meters away like on servers like WOM main server. However, I do not know much about this kind of stuff, but Notch can handle. He was pretty excited about tackling a mission like this.
It sounds like everything will be localized to the map chunk. So, the server will only track maps that have players on them actively (storing the rest on the HDD and out of RAM) and the player positions and block changes as such.
A typical human-readable output of server status might look like this:
Players: 5
Player0 Youu5 op map1,0 5,178, 67
Player1 Tillman user map4,5 67,67,23
.
.
.
So the amount of lag in the server would probably be more affected by how many maps you had open than how many players were on, as that would equate to more RAM used for all the blocks.

Do servers really lag with about 20 people? I don't really play on crowded servers. If they do, then that's bad anyway.
Also, just because infinite is going to be implemented doesn't mean it will be the only option. Hosts could still have limited maps.
It does for the non-WOM/archive/whatever one of the super-servers are. That's why some people put blocks of 9 or so people on it. Too many people can lag it to death.
ya know im REALLY FRICKEN TIRED OF PEOPLE BABBLING ABOUT "INDEV MULTIPLAYER"!
IT IS NOT HAPPENING PEOPLE!
THERE IS NO INDEV MULTIPLAYER!
NOTCH NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT INDEV MULTIPLAYER!
BY THE TIME MULTI-SURVIVAL COMES OUT THERE WILL BE NO INDEV AND NOTCH ISN'T ADDING INDEV FOR MP!
GOD!
you are the people who make me freaking mad about your stupid "indev MP HURDURHUR!!!"
shut it about this stupid nonsense please. it makes me very mad and im tired of this retarded crap.
seriously. :x
ALL CAPS
MAKE YOU LOOK
TOTALLY SMART!
When someone says Indev Multiplayer, they mean Survival MP with all the features of Indev. It is a logical conclusion to call it Indev multiplayer, because at present there are enough changes in indev to make it seperate from survival until they merge.
THINK BEFORE YOU POST, EH?
EDIT:
I made a short comic to better illustrate my point.
The point is, being specific with interchangeable terminology is stupid.

Survival mode multiplayer
Survival Mode Before beta
no date
2 High
Active
I've been on servers with 32+ people before and they're fine.
So I think its possible.
But to get that many people you have to begin buying server space on server companies' computers. It is plausibly feasible, but it would get to be rather expensive to host things that big...
But hey, I may be wrong. I'm by no means an expert on this at all.

Those servers run on dedicated VPSes. They actually use more resources than vanilla(multi world and the increased features)

I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.

Learn to read. He said infdev multiplayer, as in, servers running Infinite maps.
EDIT: Wait, do you really think that by Survival MP Notch means multiplayer running the current version of survival?
...
He means Multiplayer running the current version of /indev/, which is survival, just improved and technically unreleased.

God! GEEZ so what just correct them WITHOUT DOING THIS IT IS REALLY ANNOYING SEE! I suppose you don't see using it yourself.
By the time multiplayer survival I'm pretty sure there will be Indev as when it comes out we will be in BETA, it won't be finished and Notch will still use it for other stuff such as what he plans.

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
