zuriki i would think it can think in more than 1 dimension ( only one row of blocks)
it maybe looks on the blocks under or above it and before maybe too
if there is a hole above the hole then it is a "door" and dont get filled
if there is no path before the "door" it maybe isnt a "door" but a hole
thats possible
nearly everything is possible
( humans are a kind of "computer" too)
Well, we can tell when something is a door and if it isn't, lets say looking from the front:
#########
#########
##.##...#
#.##.##..
#.##.###.
. - Holes
# - Bricks
A robot looking at the entire face of the building might see it like this:
For it to identify all these you would need to program it with the ability to identify and recognise structural patterns or pre-defined structure patterns.
Thinks like:
Columns
Archs
Double width doors
Windows
Stairs on the outside walls
Doors with half blocks below them

Even then people could get crafty, Make 'double width doors' all the way around the object, and 'windows' too

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do.
And those that don't.

Rain, rain, go away,
THAT'S WHAT ALL THE HATERS SAY.
It's just two helpfull people, who prefer to be anonymous.
Have you seen them move? When you type in someone's name into the chat on the server, it'll start to try to follow them. They don't turn. Instead, they move forwards and strafe back and forth to remained lined up. Only when they've truly lost that person, will they start to turn. It's the same movement patterns over and over. I'm doubting they're human, as they'd have no lives to not typo once and continue to keep using the same paths.
I was on Towel's server when Friend was on. I helped me fill in a big hole I made : )
It's a pretty cool thing, and useful. They aren't that fast at fixing things though.
i was there on towel's server that day as well they have trouble with steps and things above 2-3 blocks up but its an interesting concept if true and a sad person if faked

...in a private server. It was cool, but eventually it said the time and left abruptedly, lol. Since it's private there was no griefing so there was nothing to do with it. I guess it gives a time limit for each server that can be expanded by using it... or something.

Had the "Friend" one in my server earlier. Odd.

Edit I don't need to press t to talk here XD
but then again i'm not a coder

Or how about 2 width or arched doors
For it to identify all these you would need to program it with the ability to identify and recognise structural patterns or pre-defined structure patterns.

Wom has a minimap dose it not?

Did anyone ever see RepairBot?
