You really kinda get on my nerves,
He needs the money to pay for things like food and water, and if hes doing a good job(which he is!!!) then why do you care where the money goes?
This is so weird. In the forums I came from (Phunland.com - now Algodoo.com) everyone whined and complained about having to pay for Algodoo when it came out. Phun was and is completely free while Algodoo only has a handful of features that Phun doesn't. Yet when Algodoo was released, quite a few users got upset and complained for a month or so about how greedy the developer had become (even though the program was made free for existing users of the forums).
And here is Minecraft - a game that you pay for before its even finished. And no one seems to care about what their money is being used for. Sure, it's Notch's money now, but when you make an investment you expect a return. In Phun/Algodoo you can build absolutely anything you can imagine, but in Minecraft you can just stack/remove blocks. So why would someone have a problem with paying for a product that is an improvement over an existing free product when others are fine with paying for a free product without any real gain?
And I have nothing against Notch or anyone who bought the game btw. It's just a curiosity I've been having. Maybe the age group or type of players that play Minecraft are just more willing to part with their money than Phun/Algodoo users.
And I know I've been quite redundant and repetitive here, but it's the point I've been coming to.
We appreciate the indie scene, and apparently those algodoo guys don't. And hey, Notch is really open about things like these, just mail him and he'll probably reply real fast.
I gotta say this. I tried Minecraft, I liked what I could do with it. I knew when I bought it what I was getting. I didn't buy it because of what might be coming in the future. I bought it because I spent 4 weeks enjoying just making a flatgrass map and $15 for a months fun was worth it. The fact that Notch is adding features, bug fixing and code optimizing is a great bonus.
Whats funny in hindsight is, Remember the South Park episode about World of Warcraft in which the kids spent weeks leveling their characters 20 hours a day just so they could kill the guy killing them? Afterwards one of them asked "So what do we do now?" The reply "Now we can play the game". Thats exactly what finishing my flatgrass map felt like to me. I gave out a hefty sigh and went to work making coolstuff.
I paid for Minecraft, and I still feel it was worth every penny. I still enjoy it very much. As to what Notch does with the money, I really don't mind as long as the servers do not go down again. If he wants to buy more server space, fine. If he wants to buy a new car and house, great.
The message I feel that some of you are missing is: Notch earned the money.
When you earn money, that cash is yours to do with as you please. My clients pay for portraits I make for them, but they do not follow me around and tell me what I can and cannot do with the money I have earned.
IMHO, if you want to control what Notch does with the money you give him, then just build a mind control device and take over his life. =P
You get on my nerves too.
EDIT: But that's okay. :smile.gif:
