but I’ve always found climbing in first person games to be a quite poor experience, be it crawling up over ledges or climbing up ladders. I’m going to try not having them in the game.
I thought everyone wanted ladders? Why can't we have them just because of personal preference?
He does listen to what we want, he just made a knowledge-full choice that ladders were a bad idea for this game.
I want ladders but I also believe that Notch has a point for not adding them.
Ladders will ruin the block step. I love making stairs out of blocks. Spirals and large ones allsorts. Its good he isnt going to use ladders because people wouldnt use stairs.
True, but I still think he should listen to what the players want, and most of them want ladders.
Notch does listen to what we want, but there are cases where he won't because of his own personal opinion. There's nothing unacceptable about this; if you can persuade him that the advantages and look of these ladders would outweigh his personal grievances I'm sure he'd add them in, but in his opinion ladders would look awful.
What about vines? Make it so that you 'paint' the texture onto whatever block you're looking at (mined from leaves, or something), thus giving that block the 'climbable' property.
I never had a problem with ladders in other games. Either in navigating them or perceiving them.
I disagree with Notch's opinion on ladders, but as someone else said, it's his game. And he's done a bang-up job, might I add.
So I'm not torn up about the exclusion - it'll be interesting to work stairs into walls and whatnot, once sloped blocks are added (and it's sounding like they will be). Because, let's face it, most innovation comes from limitations. I.e. if Notch added ladders, we'd all just use ladders, but if blocks are our only option, then we'll come up with all sorts of wacky solutions to the whole how do I get up there problem.

Don't forget the "how do I DOWN there problem?" that will arise once fall damage is in. :tongue.gif:
This is true, even with finite water, it would be possible.
Now, not that I'm going to start seriously arguing about realism in a game like Minecraft (and did I mention, I loooove Minecraft?), but how exactly is it that ladders are considered weird, and immersion-breaking, whereas ele-water-vators seem perfectly normal?
This is, largely, a rhetorical question, meant to put forward a point/opinion.
Again, sloped blocks would make me perfectly happy, and I'd probably use them more than ladders (except in scaffolding), but I never really 'got' the rationalization behind the decision to exclude ladders. Has anyone else had a problem with these in first-person games? I don't recall ever frowning, or rolling my eyes, as I went down a ladder in Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
PS- I love elewatervators, plz don't nerf them, Notch!!exla!!ma!tion!! :^)

Remember, its Notch's game, its his choice.

Nazi spam: It's Lua, not LUA.
Anyway, it won't be smooth server side. Unless notch implements velocity modification.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort

Edit: Fixed first line typo; doesn't -> does.

But there will be in MP survival!
