Don't jail players joining your server. It's very impolite. If you don't want people joining, make it private. Don't broadcast your server on the public list and then have players jailed as soon as they join.
Most ops say that they only lock it when there's no ops on the server, so no one can join and potential grief away when there's no one to stop them. Most ops just use it as an excuse to be a ****, though.
I laugh at the spawn prisons that are large enough to move around, because then you can just build blocks on the spawn point and respawn, and you'll pop outside.
The funnier thing is that most servers with spawn prisons are more griefed than any others. Probably because griefers take a time to find a way out and **** everyone off, while good players join, get bored of waiting for an op and then leave, so no one fixes all the griefed stuff.
The server that i OP on has a spawn prison and most people that get annoyed with being stuck abuse the **** out of everyone else then leave. I see these people as griefers and it just saves having to repair any griefed buildings. We also let everyone out unless they are rude there is no need for them.
I couldn't agree more. It really isn't in the spirit of the game to do this sort of thing. So what if griefers mess something up? Just tear it town and build something else cool. These structures aren't permanent for a reason, they aren't supposed to be monuments.

I think it depends on the situation. One server I frequent quite often makes use of a similar system but an OP is usually on and is more than willing to let you in. It's the only server where my creations have lasted since I built them (and have only been improved upon rather than bulldozed through).
I think it helps keep griefing to a minimum as legitimate players would understand that it's just to help keep the server a fun environment.
If your server is having a lot of grief issues, a spawn prison is a good start. If you have to sacrifice the entertainment of a bunch of strangers briefly, so be it. Half of them are probably just more griefers anyway, and all of them have many alternatives to the server in question.
Rude nothing. Protecting one's own time investment is perfectly rational.

You're telling us not to get pissed off because someone destroyed 5 hours of work (for example), good luck on people accepting that.
I agree, ever so much. If I join a server and there is a jail I will instantly quit, I'm not waiting for some self righteous op to say "Okay, have permission to come into my public server". I dislike having people delete what I've built, of course, but I don't care so much as to ruin the game for everyone else. It seems that a lot of players are ignoring the fact that this is a game and we play for fun. If you want to build something and it not to get deleted or touched, you either do it with unbreakable rock or in a private server, you don't stop legitimate players from playing how they want.

I get annoyed when in a "prison" and I've never griefed, they're the most irritating thing ever. I play minecraft to build, I don't care what happens to my projects after I've built them: Blocking me from building just because a couple of people grief is stupid. If you don't want new players joining your server then set it to private.

Exactly, the fun in this game is in building, not standing around being told "You can't build there that's my castle!".

Why would you build something in a public server if you wanted it to be permanent? If I build something I don't expect it to stay there, I've spent well over 10 hours on certain "projects" and I did that privately because I knew in public I wouldn't have the chance to build without interruption.

I have no problem with spawn prisons. Tbh, I support them. It means I can enjoy the game MORE because I'm safe in the knowledge that people can see my work and nobody wants to ruin my fun by deleting it.
If you're too impatient to wait for someone to let you out that's your problem, but they make perfect sense to have them.
Yes, I completely understand why they're not liked; on the other hand, I can also completely understand why they'd be used.
It's the state of the game unfortunately. It's the sorts of people that play the game. And no matter how well you try to forge your little community into something better, there will always be people out there more than willing to spoil your good times.
Personally, I'm more a fan of having a good bunch of ops on there, myself included. It might be a little invasive how we'll teleport to everybody every couple minutes just to check on them, but it's what needs to be done.
Besides, these guys are more than happy to give myself, and others, guided tours of the cool thing they were able to build because we're keeping griefers out.
Brace yourselves for a whole new era of issues once we get our survival mode.
Everything that you frown upon in sandbox mode will well be praised by your teammates in survival mode. And that's not even talking about the "anarchy" setting. :biggrin.gif:
I'm all for prisons, though I don't think of them as jails; more as a barrier for griefers. I can understand why people would make them. Most griefers just want to destroy stuff frequently and would not wait that long for an op to let them out, but few griefers do wait and are initially polite (when requesting their freedom), but that's significantly less than how many you'd get if the spawn point was open. There have been countless times where I've seen someone's fabulous, psychadelic rainbow-tower-with-matching-spiral-staircase has been griefed to bits within the hour of completion on normal servers, whereas, in servers with jails, most buildings I see untouched by the filthy mitts of griefers. Though inconvenient for some, it's incredibly useful for preventing the access of most griefers, even if it does **** other players off. I don't mind it, since, when I'm let out, that's it over and I can start as I would normally (though there's that little problem with accidentally respawning into the jail or simply disconnecting...).
Also, saying that it doesn't matter when someone's building is destroyed is like saying that it doesn't matter if a game save file is deleted, or if someone's painting is burned, or if someone's model is crushed, or if someone's movie was deleted. People care about their creations because they put effort into it.
Unless the "prison" is 1x1, then it's not a "prison" at all. Most griefers now already know how to get out of them. At this point, they're more of an idiot/newbie filter.
Also, sure, they may be good for keeping out the short attention span griefers, but they also keep out good honest players. Most people looking to politely build just won't even bother, and just head to another server. What you will get are the griefers who play the role of a nice guy, get let out, and go play that role for a little while. They do the same thing on normal servers, chatting it up, helping out, making simple structures. Then these people go and flood things quietly, destroy staircases, delete distant structures, etc. Those kind of griefers are going to get in no matter what you do.
I've had people come into my server, say "aww man, someone griefed my underwater house! I hate griefers!!" When of course, they're the ones that actually did it. Makes it pretty hard to go back through the logs and see if anyone pointed out who did it.

You still get that on open servers. That's not the cause of spawn prisons.
I loathe them, and they are ineffective, I agree with citric and will quit if I find one.
The maze solution is the only reasonable one, as it is hard to escape and puts off all but the most determined griefer.
We just don't use any protection on our server, ban griefers, it works fine in my opinion, there isn't a real need for anti griefer protection.
I fear that people are building in Minecraft for attention and props rather than fun. Its more of the "Hey look at how awesome this is, I need to keep this up forever because of how awesome it makes me."
I'm not saying this is the global case but some servers have spawn prisons and instabans for escapees. They aren't set to private because these people want you to see their stuff and they don't want you to touch what they think is perfect.

@dexter: Ah, yeah, I didn't think of it that way. After making my big pixel art of G&W, I had realized that after screenshotting what I had done and preserving the sight forever, I didn't care if it was griefed or not, because I was pretty much done with it and I had achieved the accomplishment of my creation. Pixel art is also a bit annoying when deciding where to build your buildings on those servers. You can't build anywhere in front of it; it blocks the view. You can't build behind it; it's against the side of the map. You can't build beside it; there's another slab of pixel art there! After screenshotting, videoing or saving the creation, people shouldn't care or be surprised if it gets griefed. Now, after finishing a pixel art thing again and screenshotting it, I'll feel like I should just tear down the whole thing. It would clear the wasted space... Now I'm starting to learn from all of this. XD
There's also the server restarts erasing people's work, but that doesn't seem to be as painful. o_O

I went on there a few days ago and the ops were having a good old laugh at the expense of those in the spawn prison. I now refuse to go there.
I'm not surprised it's a target for griefing.

Totally agree, IMO it just antagonises players.
