I've been playing Minecraft for almost 3 years now, so I'm nowhere new, but I feel my building skills are terrible, compared to people like Hypixel and Ridgedog. I've always loaned to be able to build mega buildings like them, but as I've said, I lack the skills.
I'm looking for ways to improve my building. I suck at pretty much everything art related, and I'm sick of it.
First off, neither ridgedog nor hypixel is even a competent builder. Ridgedog founded the voxelbox, a very good build team, but he never builds himself, he takes care of the technical aspects. And recently he handed control of the voxelbox server over to one of the admins. As for hypixel, he is rich from donations and pays mithrintia(another very good build team) to build his maps, and his server. Like ridgedog, he just does the technical parts, and occasionally does the redstoning himself. Generally in "hypixel maps", he hasn't even touched a single block that isn't redstone. So... Kinda lousy examples, but I get what you mean.
Anyway, if you want to get better at building, the best way is to join building teams like the ones I mentioned above, I've played on the voxel box server, and very briefly on the public mithrintia server, and I learned a lot. If you don't feel like that though, watch youtube videos, try to learn a lot of different styles and then combine them to make your own. Here's a list of some really good youtuber's to watch for tips.
Madnes64: Only builds in one style buy is amazing at it.
Jamziboy: Possibly one of the best ever builders out there, but relys a lot on texture packs.
FyreUK: Amazing large scale builds, but really only good for inspiration because they don't focus on details and they mainly do
timelapses.
Yogscast Sjin: If you looked at just one of his houses he made, it's nothing special, but he puts everything together so it fits perfectly and overlay looks beautiful.
Circleight: A building team, that's known for making for "art" than actual builds, but they look stunning.
Chimneyswift11: Only if you're playing in survival, but still cool.
Blockfortress: Makes pretty much anything and is very good at it, but doesn't release any tutorials or tips.
There's many more great ones too, for every great building team, there's generally a youtube channel to go with it. If you're looking to get better at terraforming though, you'll probably have to go with lesser known youtuber's, I've rarely seen a famous youtuber release a video about terraforming, besides occasionally sjin. Madnes64 terraforms mainly by hand.
Then besides youtube and joining a build team, there's tons of articles on the creative mode forums about detail, depth and whatever you need. And finally just a heck of a lot of experimenting.
If you're interested you can check out a thread I replied to giving advice on how to improve building homes, but the advice can really be used towards anything lol. Here's the link, You'll see my replies with the advice I give. Hope it helps ya:
My friend has a server called lumiacraft, it is an awesome building server, and ive learnt a lot about building from there,
1. Use blocks which go together, for example emerald and wood do NOT go together unless you are a good builder and can make it look good.
2. Always add depth and detailing to your build.
3. Use a block palette when building
4. Maybe get a reference or an image to help you build, like of a house or castle.
5. Use blocks which are suitable for your theme of building.
6. Use a theme of building, like medieval, it helps when you search for references.
7. Be original with your ideas, don't just copy the image (If you use one)
I hope these tips helped you, they sure helped me
message me if you want the server ip, I don't want to look like im advertising
