As part of a continuing series, I am creating step-by-step instructions for building structures in minecraft.
I previously demo-ed a build instruction style here. In that thread, a couple of players extended the basic cabin module by adding stables, a wrap-around porch, etc.
Here I use the basic cabin design to build a large island home. Please note, due to forum restrictions, only some of the pictures from this build are presented here. For a complete photo essay of the build, you can click over to my flickr.
The items you will need:
The island which will host the build.
A grid of pillars keeping the same 5x5 dimensions as the small cabin. All of the pillars have a cobble base.
The first floor of planks with visible back deck.
Extending the pillars upward, and preparing the basement room. Note the man-made stream for aesthetic value.
Wall construction, front porch, and stairs to the beach.
Back deck with first floor walls complete.
Loft construction.
Partial roof and completed front porch.
Mostly complete roof from view of back deck.
Finished structure from front.
Finished structure from side.
Finished structure from back.
This entire building is build using the same basic cabin concept. A following post will show the interior.
As always, comments are encouraged!

What you can do for more complex builds is use MCEdit. Build the structure, vehicle, or whatever it may be and then cut it layer by layer and take screens of each layer. Just an idea.
I really love these kind of things. Taking basic concepts and just having fun and perfecting them. Too many megastructures that lack detail. Nice house.
What you can do for more complex builds is use MCEdit...
I've not used MCEdit, but if I can convert already built structures into instructions, that would be very desirable.

This is actually pretty nice. Wasn't expecting much when I clicked on the link.
Your flow with the enviornment is very impressive. I'd love to see more of these "step-by-step's".
I plan to do more step-by-steps. It's a very different way of building when I'm building and planning instructions. I actually spent two minecraft days just looking at the island trying to see how I could lay out the house given the terrain. I'm a Buddhist with Taoist sympathies, so the idea of working with, not against, the flow of nature is important to me. I'm glad you think I've made some progress there!

Looks very nice, hope to build one of these in my village.
To be honest, I liked the basement before you added the glass and walls. They looked like very nice support beams.
I like the beam style as well. I suppose you could keep the space under the main floor empty, and move the crafting to the main floor. That would fill the main floor space better. When I decided to put the crafting facilities in the basement, I wanted windows because the other crafting rooms elsewhere in my world are underground. I wanted to bring in some natural light this time.

You should definetly put this world up for download i want to have a closer look at the dimensions and stuff.
This is a part of my main build world. I intend to release it at some point, but not yet. I'm told MCEdit will copy and paste chunks to new maps, but I'm not sure if the prog. works on a Mac. If not I'm not sure how to release just this build before my final map is ready.
ideas?

please dont stop making Step-by-Step's You are one of the best ive seen so far. you actually helped me build some stuff by using different components from a different mixture of your step by steps.

Just inside the door:
Empty space under the loft, with ladder access to the loft and basement:
A wide angle with the front door to the right, back deck behind the center pillar, and a wrap-around couch in the foreground:
The empty back room, underscoring my poor decorating skill:
The view from the back deck, now with an altered rail which allows for easy fishing:
Taking the ladder to the basement, the crafting area and a view out the front lower windows:
The other half of the basement, with chest and a ladder behind the chest leading to a subway that connects all my build areas:
The loft, the highest room in the cabin, with ladder down to the main floor and basement:
If anyone has ideas for how to fill the space on the main floor, I'm all ears!

Good job on this. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! To my knowledge, there is not such a feature. I'll see what I can do...

I added an ingredients image to the OP (original post).

dont mess with this
