My son has been playing Minecraft on creative mode after doing survival for a while. He built a pretty elaborate town before he ever went to kill the ender dragon. Today he built a house and stuff in the End. But when he tried to return to his original world he was sent to a bare island and now can't find his main town. According to him he played around on the new island and apparently slept there.
In the past when he got lost in survival mode I was able to use Minutor to find his town. But for some reason I can't get Minutor to work, it just crashes when I load a world. I tried to find the most up to date Minutor but it didn't seem to matter.
Anyway. He is distraught that all his hard work is gone (he is 9). And he is at the point he wants to just give up. I have searched for other programs like Minutor that might point us in the right direction but have been unsuccessful. The compass just points to the island he spawned on when leaving the End.
Well beds don't explode in the end I don't think so they should have the spawn set I assume just like in the overworld.
Otherwise keeping track of the coordinates is important, but otherwise I don't know a lot of 3rd party programs to help with this. There is I guess mod/tools like DynMap (which I think is more for servers but covers previously visited world gen) or I assume Amidst could help but I don't know much about it. https://github.com/toolbox4minecraft/amidst/releases (and for more info on what it can do: https://github.com/toolbox4minecraft/amidst)
Others can answer this with more options and knowledge of programs or solutions but these are what came to mind for me (and somewhat sticking outside of mods). And I assume your on Java Edition due to being in the Java Edition forum correct?
Yes, I'm pretty sure it is Java edition. Not sure I explained the problem exactly. He never slept in the End. He said it would explode? Anyway.
He said he killed the Ender Dragon a day or two ago. Went back to his world. He then used some crystal to respawn the Ender Dragon and killed it again. He said as he killed the dragon the second time he accidentally broke a bedrock block from the portal.
When he went to leave the portal he was sent to an empty island. I am currently trying to use the tool you linked but other then showing him on his island I'm not having much luck.
So is this new island not the original spawn point? If he slept there then couldn't he just break the bed, do a /kill command, and it would take him back to the original spawn point? Does he remember building his town on top of the world's spawn point?
I don't believe it is the original spawn point. He said he explored before building his town.
We tried the breaking bed and kill command on the island he is stuck on and it sent him back to the End...... We went back through the end portal and ended up back on the little island.

When he got lost in the past we used Minutor to find his home by finding the color blocks he used to build with. Are there any map programs that show the color blocks that have been added? All the ones I have use so far just show different colors for different biomes and icons for villages and such. I did find a very old backup save folder that I was able to reload and write down the map coords. I then went to his main world save and ventured back to the coordinates and found a nether portal. Sadly he had no clue what he did after that point.......Still as lost as ever. On a tiny island in the middle of the ocean.......
I have tried several of those programs with no luck. Most just show his character in the middle of the ocean and the different biome colors. Not details as to changes and things that have been built.
Try looking further to north, south, east or west, on the map untill you see buildings of his town.

Good news. I found another post on this site that linked to a program called Unmined. It worked great! Only showed the areas that had been previously explored and also showed the details of the terrain. Once I found the spot I just wrote down the coordinates and flew right to his home after a long long long flight. I think this game might just be too big! Either way he is a happy boy!
Oh, and apparently all this may have been caused because some how a villager was inside his house standing on his bed?! He said there was a message that his bed was obstructed when he tried to respawn at his home. Either way, this stupid thing is fixed.
That will take you to a Dropbox.com page Titled Minutor.zip with a list of the files in the .zip file.
Click on the download arrow on the right side to download the zip.
I have a Minutor folder in my .minecraft folder and a Nightly build folder in that.
I placed the .zip there and extracted the files.
Then I right click on the .exe and dragged it to my desktop and chose create a shortcut here.

There are no dangerous weapons. There are only dangerous people. R.A. Heinlein
If you aren't part of the solution, then you obviously weren't properly dissolved.
OBTW : Minutor now has several view options.
Including Jump to: Spawn, a Player, or a location.
If you have a unique block in your construction (or an unusual one) you can search for that block and have it shown on the Minuor display.
This is how I find Abandoned Mines, I search for "rail".

The latest "NIGHTLY BUILD" of Minutor will work with all Releases through 1.16.1.
Open this page: https://github.com/mrkite/minutor/wiki
then click on Nightly Builds in the list on the right side.
Then click on Inofficial Nightly by EtlamGit
