After the last update my guardian farm started working. However, when I stand on top of the AFK platform (115 blocks away) the farm doesn't work.
The documentation I've found indicates the guardians should spawn within 128 blocks. Does anybody have different information for spawns within X blocks of the player on the Xbox?
I've been wanting to know the new spawn distances too since the new update. Before the update, I used to be only 20 blocks away, but now I have to go a lot further away to get them to spawn. Anyone know how close I can be for them to spawn
No mobs (passive or hostile) can not spawn within 24 blocks of a player, that is to say not counting the block you are standing on, no mobs can spawn 24 blocks away in a sphere. The exception to the rule is zombie sieges on villages, in this case mobs can spawn anywhere within the village radius, and possibly on the very block the player is standing on.
They will NOT despawn if they are 32 blocks or less from the player, any further out and there is a chance for them to despawn, the further out they are the greater the chance, at 128 blocks or more hostile mobs will despawn, unless named, or they are carrying an item (though i don't think this works on console).
Most mobs can be heard upto 16 blocks away, and most are aware of a player when they are within 16 blocks, however some have greater detection range.
Many mobs also have a movement halt range, meaning they will stop moving if the player is quite a ways away, and its different for all mobs, the exception to the rule is any mob that is actively tracking a target.
The ideal standing location is 25 blocks away from the closest spawn space from the farm. Many players will place themselves 128 blocks away, but they must make sure that only the farm is within spawn distance, and they must ensure that the farm will kill the mobs right away otherwise there is a good chance the mobs in the farm will despawn.
A good example is, in my current world, I've dug out a HUGE hole straight down to bedrock that is (175 radius (350 blocks wide)), in the center is my base, about 75 blocks from each of the corners of my base is a witch hut (quad witch huts), and thus while in my base all 4 witch huts can be active. I used to use a shifting floor design that when the witches spawned, the floors shifted back and forth till the witches fell through them and then fell to thier death (40 block drop), They fell onto hoppers which picked up the loot, and dropped it into water channels which brought it to below my base where an item eleveator brought the items into my base, sorted and stored them for me. On average i was getting about 12,000 items per hour.
As the world too shape I decided that all the hoppers that was picking up the drops was causing some lag, and I redesign the system so that under the shifting floors I had a water system setup to catch the witches as they fell through, and channeled them to a 1 block drop (again 40 block drop), now I only needed 1 hopper to collect all the items, per witch hut. All the changes went into play, and my items per hour dropped to around 8,500 per hour.
The reason why I am experiencing less drops is because some witches are despawning while in the water channeling part, plus on top of that it also takes time for the witches now to be pushed by the water to the 1x1 drop. This is time that used to be used spawning more witches.

Hope this helps.
That is an enormous hole you dug. I can't imagine the time and resources that took.
