There are no servers for the console editions of Minecraft like there are for the PC version. You can set up a game to play with your friends (console to console), but one of you has to host the world on your console and send out invites.
Also at this point in time it is also restricted to the same type of console. Xbox One can only play with other Xbox One consoles, Xbox 360 with other Xbox 360, etc... There isn't any cross-platform play at this time.
Essentially it just means that someone is hosting a world and is looking for friends to join the world while they are playing. It's just a technicality of speech to refer to this as a server. Are they serving a game of Minecraft? Yes, but only when they are online and playing Minecraft at that time.
One thing that I wish people would do when they are looking for friends to play with is to mention which time zone that they are in and what times they usually play the game. For example: I live on the West Coast of the US. Someone may want me to play in their world with them, but they are in the UK. There is an 8 hour time difference between the two of us so it is highly unlikely that I would ever be able to join their game.
With that being said... There are some people who have purchased a second Xbox One that they dedicate solely to Minecraft and leave it running 24/7. But those people are few and far between, and you really need to be in good graces with them to get a friend request accepted.
One thing that you will hear continuously on these forums is the need for either dedicated servers or Minecraft Realms. Realms will probably be the option that we get. Those are dedicated servers that run 24/7 (currently only for the PC/Java version and beta testing in the Android Pocket Edition). Realms however is a subscription service which the person who is hosting the world would have to pay a monthly fee to have their world online.
Basically your son has to get friends and join there worlds that they have made. You can also download maps such as hunger games and skywars. Me and my friends have a lot of maps so if your son would like to join our games he can :).Just add GirlyWarrior22
You can not have servers on Minecraft Xbox One Edition. Hopefully they do have it soon, but sadly not yet. You can have servers on PC, but not in Xbox Minecraft. But, you can get your son to have friends on his Xbox, then he cane invite them by pressing the 2 squares button, than pressing the X button. It will then take him to his friends list, and he can check 7 or less people he wants to koi his game. Once he's done choosing his friends, he can press the button with three lines on it, and that will send the invite. His friends should then come to his world.
So they finally allow it, bout time. Can you dial any ip like java or is it limited to your friends list like on legacy console? Do we have access to a real server file (also like java) or do you just open to lan?
Edit: I looked around for a minute, couldn't find any info about this.
I am trying to help my son join a server on his xbox one but not having much luck as I not sure how or what to do..

I will almost certainly buy a Realms sub if/when it comes out and you all are invited.
How do you download maps?
Yes, I'd like to know this too
you download games by going on to settings. then go to store. then you click on maps and wala.
is there any way to join other servers besides the featured
servers like mineplex
Nope, there is no open server hosting.
The only thing you can do is buy a realm. You can then allow people from your friends list to join.
Kiddo... Lmao.. I wish.
