With the limited hostile mob spawns we can get, is it better to go with a mob spawner farm, or to create one of the big boxes with water channels+darkness?
I have built a large, dark box with multiple levels, and have lit up all around it, but it still seems to have limited spawning. There are some mob spawners I found while adventuring, and I simply torched them off, but should I create a mob farm around those instead of my big box?
Has anyone noticed a difference in spawning efficiency/xp gains from either method?
I found a spider spawner, not cave, but don't really know how to make a farm with that, and I have seen other people make a farm from it and gain exp pretty quick.. do you have a regular spider spawn too? or just cave?
As far as I'm concerned your best bet for XP is an endermen farm. I believe its the fastest most efficient way to level. IMHO all other farms are more for thier drops and not for xp. I build almost all my farms endermen style, with the exception that its a fatal drop to the mobs. Overworld and neither farms should kill as fast as possible to make way for the next set of spawns. Exceptions of course for blaze, maga's, slimes, and of course ghast, they require more complicated farming methods.
Afraid your dead wrong on this, it takes between 5 and 10 seconds min for those mobs to move outside of the spawner, and yet another 5 or so seconds for the spawner to spawn another group. Add to that the time it takes to elevate and drop them, so that they are 1 shot kills, ur looking at between 25 to 30 seconds per mob at the very min and between 4 and 5 per batch..
Lets look at a good endermen farm, where theres usually around 8 tiers or floors with around 64 spawn spaces per floor, with no other place for them to spawn, with a good setup (plenty of air spaces at spawn floor height). On average we should be getting around 2 to 3 per second. With a fall time of about 2 seconds, which reduces them to a 1 shot kill. Thus we are getting 2 to 3 endermen every 2 or 3 seconds max.
So if we do some math roughly every 30 seconds min 5 skeletons should be ready for death @ 5xp = 25 xp every 30 seconds.
And every 3 seconds so we'll have 30 in 30 seconds. 30 Endermen @ 5xp = 150xp every 30 seconds, which we can clearly see is superior over skeleton spawners.
Now this don't take into effect that some skeletons will spawn with equipment, which will give them 1 to 3 xp more, but it also means that some skeletons will get feather falling meaning they won't take alot of fall damage, and thus take alot longer to kill. This also don't take into effect duel, tri, or quad spawners, but even they would be hard pressed to beat a good endermen farm.
Even duel blaze spawners (which is not unheard off, but rare), would not take on a endermen farm. Even though blaze are worth a whopping 10xp. Reason is it takes time to crush them down to 1 hit kills.
Any decent minecraft player should be able to verify that no spawner can compete with a endermen farm. If you watch any LPS, its the endermen farm that most players head to for doing alot of enchantments. So yeah I still stand behind my claim, and will put down money against it.
As I've said before, and i'll say it again, you don't need to light up the end, nor do you need to flood it. With a bit of homework one can always find that there are parts of the main island that allow one to bridge out from it, putting around 120+ blocks between you and the island, which is enough to cause anything on the main island (cept the dragon), to despawn, and thus perfect for an endermen far.
I'm not going to continue to argue with you over which farm is superior, as you seem set in your ways and that's cool. I will give you a point on that if your doing just 1 or 2 enchantments, a spawner works just fine, but if your up for doing a lot of enchantments at once, well the spawner is just too slow, hell even two spawners that can be active at once is too slow.
So you yourself said that they must first spawn, then get transported out of the escape area, then up a water elevator. Calculate the time here for all this to take place, and its at least 20 to 30 seconds. Try a good endermen farm where they spawn, and fall, and r ready for the 1 shot, so that more can start spawning again. In other words it takes 30 seconds for you to kill 1, before another can replace him. This is not the case with endermen farms. As soon as a kill an endermen, another is ready to take his place within seconds, This isn't the case with a spawner.
But the spawner works for you, and that good, but if your talking about speed and efficiency of leveling up, the endermen farm CANT be beat! Let me rephrase that, on console an endermen farm can't be beat, on PC a silverfish farm can't be beat, but it takes time for this farm to build up its stored XP values, sadly due to the low mob cap on consoles, silverfish farms don't really work well.

More xp from spawner but less diverse drops
my gt - jmoses1323
You get all the drops plus the xp.
Blaze spawners work very nicely too.
My city but I can get to level 30 in about 10 min depending on how
Many zombies spawn
