TU31 has been live for almost a month now and it's time to figure out where minecraft console edition heads from here. With TU31 now in place, console edition is completely caught up to PC version, minus 2 things until 1.9 is officially live. The only 2 missing things being banners and barrier blocks. Yes, command blocks are still missing and it has become clear that those most likely will not be officially added.
That goes without saying that realms is a strong candidate to be introduced this year. Perhaps mid to late 2016. But what can we expect from the more near future updates? Bug fixes have obviously been confirmed however, 4J hasn't had any purely bug fix oriented updates in almost a year. Every update between tu25 and tu31 introduced some very small add-ons such as custom flats or changing textures or certain items like the poppy and the sponge.
So what does this mean? The chance of small add-ons continuing is quite high. Banners would be the obvious add but this will not be an easy feat. I expect banners will become available by tu33/34. Barrier blocks are another obvious add and are a very strong potential to be added as the focus of the previous 4 updates has mainly been on creative mode, the book and quill, custom super flats, new wood types etc.
But there also is a very small chance that 4J may start to introduce small, guaranteed, parts of 1.9. I can't say as to what but you can definitely expect dual wielding, the End cities and elytra, pathfinding AI and the new cooldown system sometime late this year to early 2017. This also goes without saying that the new enhancements will be even furthur strain on the pre-gen consoles. If banners are difficult enough to program in to add to tu31 just imagine the amount of programming it will take for the new systems for pre-gen.
We aren't just talking about the capability to store the information unlike what certain others may assume. The End cities would add on more generated blocks, pathfinding would add the strain of the program trying to determine what blocks in a 32x32x32 radius are best for upwards of 60 mobs at a time with the capability of turning on and off that movement for any number of those mobs at any given time. Then we have the elytra. You may say "we have flying in creative" and you'd be correct. The elytra doesn't allow you to fly. It allows you to glide. The system would already be tracking numerous mobs and entities such as armor stands, chests, item frames and redstone that may be present.
Add on top of that the need for the system to determine what your position is while gliding, how fast you descend or ascend, tracking how you move through the world and determining if you land safely or if the block you encounter needs to register as damageable. That is a lot of strain to put on an already failing system. But hey! Who cares right? This is a happy update topic! I'm happy about the bug fixes. Just not looking forward to the potential bugs when 1.9 comes to console. But thats like a year maybe year and a half off.
I expect bug fixes, a huge pause in content with maybe another more minor bug fix down the line, and maybe 1.9, but I have my doubts.
All I hope is that Barriers become obtainable in-game. I had a chance to fiddle with them, and they're a great map-making asset. They're just weird with lighting is all.
