Has anyone else had a horse disappear with no trace? I've had two horses, and two saddles only, and both have disappeared without any trace whatsoever. One horse was on a lead on a fence post, the other was in a hut with a fence door and ceiling it could not get out of (pictured.)
it has been really annoying, because both times I had made progress, and had not yet saved. Is this a known bug??? What do I do? I'm almost afraid to tame another horse because I might lose it.
That was rude, but you ought to look into your issues more before you post. There's plenty of bug report threads already. But still, here's some advice anyway:
The horse spawning issue is a known bug. People have been looking into ways to prevent it, but none have worked consistently. So, until the bug fix comes out, you"ll need to be prepared to have your horse spawn. You can still tame it, and ride it and use it, but you"ll just need to take everything off when you finished (And maybe kill it too, to get some extra leather)
For me, naming them works. None of my horses have gone missing when I named them. Name them, save and exit and get back on. They should be fine after that and never despawn unless killed. Only trouble is finding a name tag...unless you're in creative.

Er, it's the saving and reloading process that is keeping your horses from de-spawning, provided they are properly fenced in. They do NOT need to be named. This is a myth that is being repeated endlessly in various threads. Many, many people have reported their named horses de-spawning.
I have 24 horses in my stable and have yet to find a single name tag (strictly survival). Can't fish for them, and my librarians won't trade for them, and apparently won't until the next update. So naming things is thus far irrelevant, but I am looking forward to doing it at some point.

Well...I did say name tags are hard to come by in survival. None of my horses despawned after I named them. I named them and went away, without saving and exiting, came back and they were still there. I added in the saving and exiting for just in case. I have been in creative and got horses, named them and went away but when i came back to them they were just fine. Again, for me I've had no trouble with horses despawing after being named and without saving and exiting. If I didn't name a horse after tamed, it would be gone if I went away for a little while. I had to stay close and name it for it to then stay. They don't need to be fenced in or tied either to stay. I can let them roam in a big pasture I made without despawning.
But you aught to try walking FAR away from your named horses. It's not exiting and saving that's the issue, it's proximity. To test this, walk about 200 blocks away from your tamed horses, then come back and see if they're there.

Since the cap limit on chickens is 16 and the limit on tame wolves seems to be about the same, I'm having some difficulty believing that you are hanging onto 24 tamed horses when others are reporting despawns of much smaller numbers (both named and unnamed and fenced and tied). Pics please.

I didn't specify...my fault. When I say I went away, I did in fact go away, far away and stayed away for many minecraft days. They were fine still.
Thanks for posting/asking. I am a casual player in my original survival game that's over a year old. I've collected several saddles and horse armor (even diamond!). Today I decided to finally tame a horse and figured it out. I made the long journey to the area where I knew horses were, tamed one (took the time to pick one I thought looked awesome) and then made the long ride back to my main castle.
I boxed it in with dirt, then spent a few minecraft days doing other stuff. I go to check on it/ride it to a far off place to get supplies i had left there, and the thing is gone!!!
Reading this now it appears to not be worth my time until they fix this. I have no name tags. It sounds like leashing it might be the only thing I could try, but that even sounds to not work.
I use mineback, but I don't want to risk losing more saddles and especially the diamond armor I found..

I actually have 24 horses, a mule and a donkey. I just killed a horse and a donkey in the wild, but no horses have spawned at all since then (in 3-4 hours of play). All the horses are in their own stalls in a 36-stall stable, built to house each of the markings.
My world is a pretty standard world generated after tu16, with a desert temple and jungle temple. I'm no mc wizard, and don't know if it matters, but maybe the players having the most trouble holding onto horses are playing on older worlds.
Maybe one of these days I'll invest in the camera tech, but I haven't yet. I too am skeptical as a rule, but I would never lie about minecraft. It's just not worth it.
I'm going to start breeding me some horses. I read the wiki about it, but I'm not clear about the specific markings that may appear in a foal. I wonder if a black stallion/black mare will produce offspring that are pure black, or one of the variations. Time to find out.

OK, I'll accept your word for it... seems odd though that they would have such low caps on wolves and chickens, but allow so many horses (at least 3 per player, using the max player limit of 8).

The bug with the horses despawning appears to be conditional. If certain conditions are met, then the horse is likely to despawn... such as a named wild hose (never been ridden) that is penned up and tethered with a lead might despawn IF the player doesn't exit and save first before moving away... or might stick around if you bothered to ride it, tame it, and name it. But unnamed horses that have similarly been tamed and penned up (or leashed) might be at risk of despawning every time you ride them, unless you exit and save and reload the game before you move away from them and they despawn. Several of us have seen horses stick around and not despawn as well as horses that despawn for no apparent reason whatsoever.
So... assuming the right conditions are met, I can believe that a player is able to accumulate and keep a sizable amount of horses... as long as they are careful about trying to not enter into conditions that make the horse vulnerable to despawn.

I'm just surprised the limit for horses would be so much higher than the one for wolves or even chickens, that's all.

Yes, we know, this bug has been reported about a hundred times now.

It's also extremely rude when people don't bother to search to see if their particular issue has been brought up 100 times before posting.
I thought I was the only rude one around here.
But yeah, calling someone Captain Rude isn't much better, nor is not checking around to see if something has been reported again and again.
Stay fluffy~

I started a thread about horse caps at http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-xbox-360-edition/mcx360-discussion/2309405-horse-cap
a week ago but only one person responded. Maybe someone out there knows something more about it. And if I can accumulate 24 horses, someone else can.
