Easy, It's every man for themselves PVP. The object of the game is to be the last person standing. When the game starts you're at the cornucopia along with 7 (Or less) counterparts. When the game starts people either run for the chests in the center or go off. Like you said you can see the resemblance from the books. No one is allowed to break blocks and people go around and try to find hidden chests with supplies in them. Usually it's very scarce supplies as you're supposed to be surviving. Whatever stuff you find in chests you can use on your opponents. Last person standing wins.

In addition, they're an extremely overused game type.
I at least spared that horrid centerpiece and kept those chests out in my map.
