Over the last few nights, I've been sampling with various methods to lure and kill endermen. I think I've stumbled on a pretty good method, but I'd a little confused over one thing.
I've built a small hunting house next to the desert with a fence 1 block out from the edge of the roof (so I looks like its hanging in mid-air). I also have a fence on the ground level 1 block out from the base. The roof is 4 blocks off the ground and access the roof via a ladder from inside the house. From the roof, I can easily shoot any mobs standing outside the fence with a bow and have a clear shot at any mobs around for qutie a distance.
As a bit of endermen protection for me, I made a smaller suspended roof over the center of the roof platform 2 blocks off the ground (so endermen cannot get to me if I'm standing under that part). What I do is get on the roof and stare down any endermen I spot in the distance (by putting my crosshairs on their eyes). It gets them angry every time and they come to get me.
What confuses me is that they never seem to teleport to the roof level but teleport to a spot on the ground just outside that fence. I then need to climb down the ladder, open the door and run at them with a sword to strike over that ground-level fence. Only 1 enderman has ever been found in the 1 block space between the house and that fence such that when I opened the door, he was right there in front of me. Until that happened, I was thinking that perhaps endermen could not come right over a fence; but if one can do it, then they all can. So, why are they just coming over the fence on the roof to get at me?
As I said, it does seem to be working in that I have collected 13 enderpearls in about seven Minecraft nights all tolled. I've also killed a number of the other mobs - creepers, skeletons, spiders and zombies.
It could be, but I'm not really thinking it's a bug. The Wiki doesn't mention anything about Endermen and fences; and I have found some comments regarding endermen and fences one the PC that contradict one another. That is, one says they won't cross a fence and another says they will teleport right through them. If it is a bug, I suspect it's one that was also present on the PC at this version (1.0.1); but I have no way of telling whether or not it imay have been changed in a later version.
I'm thinking that it is perhaps that endermen are shy about smaller spaces. For example, I also haven't had any endermen inside this hunting house even though the ceiling is 4 blocks tall and I'm deliberately provoking them. I have had them them occasionally in my regular house, which has a ceiling 3 blocks tall but also has more empty floor space than the hunting house.
Maybe try placing 3 or 4 rows of fences, with a 1 block gap in between them. Provoke an enderman, and see if he teleports through the fences to you. Make you fences long enough, maybe 30 or so.
This way, you'll know if it's a fear of fences or small places that are bothering these Enderpeoples.

I'd try myself, but I wont be on MC tonight.
Thanks for the idea. I'll give it a go when I get home tonight.
No probs. Also, you could stand in between the fences and see if they get you then.
PM me when you find out. It'd help Enderproof my living room. ( Damn squaters )
I moved the fences out so that there were two clear blocks between the house and fence and, once I got to the ground, the very first enderman I provoked came in right over the fence to get at me. Then, naturally, the next two stopped at the fence. One thing is consistent, however, none of them are coming right to me while I'm on the roof. The first time they come in, they teleport just outside the fence at ground level. I can't do any more testing right now, but I'll try to check out more on this tomorrow night.
